Born on May 25, 1938, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Kate Hash Anderson, and was preceded in death by an infant son, Jonathan Paul Anderson, and a sister, Geneva Anderson. Having grown up in Troutdale, he was a graduate of Sugar Grove High School and served in the U.S. Army, and was employed with the Southwestern State Hospital for over 25 years. Jack was an avid golfer. Surviving are his wife, Martha Anne Patton Anderson of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathi Lynn and Mark Lines of Roseville, Calif.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jeffrey D. and Mary Anderson of Bristol Virginia, Brian K. and Rhonda Anderson of Abingdon and Matthew A. Anderson of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Haley Anderson, Benjamin Anderson and Erin Lines; three step- grandchildren, John, Melissa and Kyle Smith; one brother and sister-in-law, Harry "Moe" and Erma Anderson of Sugar Grove; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Marvin "Butch" Blankenbeckler and Carolyn and the Rev. She was born in Corinth, Ky., and was the daughter of the late Harry and Hazel Acree Mason. She was a 1946 graduate of Eastern University of Kentucky and had been a member of Antioch Christian Church since age 13. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel L. Baker. (Buzzy) Boyd Jr. A graduate of Virginia Intermont College, she taught piano in Honaker and Lebanon for many years and was chosen as Miss Russell County in 1938. She was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church. Marguerite enjoyed doing needle work, music and reading. "Bud" Derting, 98, passed away at Holston Valley Medical Center on Wednesday, March 10, 2004. Born in Hiltons, Va., on June 5, 1905, he was the son of the late Walker S. and Peggy Gardner Derting. Bud was a descendent of the early settlers of the North Fork Holston River community of self-sufficient family farmers. Following employment with Virginia Department of Highways, he gave full-time attention to raising grain crops, tobacco and livestock. He was an original trustee of the local Beech Grove Church and supported it throughout his active life. Because of his longevity and wide experiences in this area of Southwest Virginia, descending generations, both local and from afar, turned to him for information about their ancestors, family lands and cemeteries. His death marks the end to an era of hard-working, self-sufficient family farmers, and his vast knowledge of family history and local folklore will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dollie Grove Derting, grandson, Bobby Derting, two sisters, Grace Fleenor and Maxie Reynolds, and siblings Cordie, Velma, Blanche, Sidney, John and Joe died in early childhood. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater and was retired from Kern’s Bakery with 42 years of service. Dorothy Miller GATE CITY – Mrs. Dorothy Ann Meade Miller entered into rest Friday, March 12, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol Tennessee. Mrs. Miller was born in Richlands on Aug. 6, 1928, daughter of the late John Carden and Mary Kilgore Meade. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, was a former employee of the Scott County School System and was a member of the Gate City Community Fellowship Baptist Church. She dedicated her life to nurturing children in her career as an educator and with her family, friends and church. Her husband, J.C. "Rip" Miller, preceded her in death in April 2003. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Miller Vass, Lexington, Ky., Jane and Curtis Spriggs, Bristol Virginia, and Susan and Brad Fitzgerald, Roanoke; sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Debbie Miller, Gate City, and David Miller, Richmond; grandchildren, Sarah and Katie Vass, Alison and Andrew Miller and John and William Fitzgerald; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim Thornton, Gate City; sister-in-law, Beuolah Mae Orr, Atlanta; nieces, Betsy Jennings and Ann Lacy; nephew, Jimmy Thornton, and several other nieces and nephews.
