He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Elmore Anderson. Mr. Anderson was formerly a taxi driver in the Saltville area for many years. Survivors: special nephew, Alvin Lynch and wife Lois of Saltville; and several other nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Mr. Anderson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Ridgedale Cemetery, with Phillip Harris, minister, officiating. Pallbearers will be the nephews. Bench Dr. Joseph E. Bench, 74, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center, as the result of a head injury. Dr. Bench was a native of Blairsville, Pa., and lived in Johnson City since 1971. Dr. Bench was a combat Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Dr. Bench received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Vincents College in Pennsylvania and his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Subsequently, he was employed for 14 years in human resource management in three major Fortune 500 Corporations: United States Steel Corporation (in Pennsylvania), Georgia Pacific Corporation (in Maine) and FMC Corporation (in Charleston, W.Va.). Dr. Bench received his doctorate degree from West Virginia University. He was employed as a professor of psychology for 23 years at Virginia Intermont College, in Bristol Virginia. He was a member of The American Psychological Association, The Industrial and Organizational Society, The Association for Psychological Type, The American Society of Training and Development and The Franklin Investment Club. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, in Johnson City. He will be buried at the National Cemetery at Mountain Home, Tenn. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Johnson City at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Virgel Franklin Booher PINEY FLATS – Reverend Virgel Franklin Booher, age 77, died March 15, 2004, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a Sullivan County native and the son of the late Baxter and Edith Kautz Booher. Reverend Booher was a World War II Army veteran. He received degrees from Duke Divinity School and Emory University. He was a member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, having served in the ministry 45 years, before retiring in 1990. He served churches in the Abingdon, Kingsport, Morristown and Johnson City districts. He continued to serve as visitation minister and pastor emeritus at Edgefield United Methodist Church until his death. Reverend Booher was an avid camper and member of the local WIT camping club.
