He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Elmore Anderson. Mr. Anderson was formerly a taxi driver in the Saltville area for many years. Survivors: special nephew, Alvin Lynch and wife Lois of Saltville, and several other nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Mr. Anderson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Ridgedale Cemetery, with Phillip Harris, minister, officiating. Pallbearers will be the nephews. Richard Arnold BRISTOL, Va. – Richard Eugene Arnold, age 68, passed on from this life on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at his residence. He spent most of his life in the Bristol area. He was an U.S. Air Force veteran and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Trula Arnold, and brother, Bill Arnold. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years JoAnne Stevens Arnold. Blackburn, on Thursday, March 18, 2004. Born Nov. 3, 1914, she spent most of her life as a resident of Bandy, Va. She was the daughter of the late John Milton and Susie Wingo Lambert, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. She and her husband were owners of the National Supermarket and Sportsman Shop in Richlands for many years. Mrs. Blackburn had a great love of antiques and was one of the founding members of the Cedar Bluff Heritage Festival. She was an active member of the Republican Party and assisted at the polls. As an owner and breeder of American Saddlebred horses, she was a familiar face on the show circuit. She had a great love of nature and shared it with her friends. Known by friends as "Granny," everyone loved her great sense of humor. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel R. "Ranny" Blackburn and Lee Anna, and her four granddaughters, Virginia Hearl, Ann Mance and husband Greg, Lynn Baker and husband Kevin and Maria Williams and husband Jeff. Mrs. Blackburn adored her four great-grandchildren, Austin, Morgan, Montana and Landon. The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 20. Born June 14, 1916, in Russell County, a daughter of the late Clarence Wampler and the late Martha Jane Johnson Wampler, she was the wife of the late Vaught Farmer. She was a member of the Spring City Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Wampler and Ray Wampler, and two sisters, Alverta Greening and Alice Fugate. Survivors include two sisters, Beulah Morris, Erwin, Tenn., and Frances Gobble, Glade Spring; two brothers, Ernest Wampler, Castlewood, and Stuart Wampler, Radford; a special nephew, Neal Farmer, Lebanon, also, several nieces and nephews. Icenhour, age 77, of 200 Morley Lane, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004, following an extended illness. A native of Dorchester, Va., he was born Feb. 2, 1927, to the late Jonah Dowell Icenhour and Iva Lee Morefield Icenhour. He was formerly employed by Burlington Industries, where he was employed for 20 years, and by K-Vat Food Stores of Abingdon. George was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force Infantry during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 1956 of Kingsport. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and billiards. He attended the Shady Valley Presbyterian Church for the past 54 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim Icenhour, Buford Icenhour and Luther Icenhour, and one sister, Wilma Jean Icenhour. Helen Justice SWORDS CREEK, Va. – Mrs. Helen Delcie Whitt Justice, age 86, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital following an illness of several months. She was born in Russell County and was the daughter of the late William Floyd and Dora Ethel Dye Whitt, both Russell County natives. She had made her home on the Horton Ridge section of Swords Creek and was a former nurse’s aid at the Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital for over 15 years. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Elmer Justice, three brothers, one sister, three grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Louis Kovacs FARMVILLE, Va. – Dr. Louis Kovacs, age 85, died Wednesday, March 17, in Farmville. He was a retired professor of education at Longwood University, a graduate of Emory & Henry College Class of 1944, graduate of Southern Methodist University and received a doctorate degree of education from University of Tennessee. He coached football, baseball and basketball at Pocahontas High School and Virginia High, was supervisor and assistant superintendent of Russell County, Va., Schools, and was principal of Highland View Elementary, Virginia Middle School and Virginia High School in Bristol Virginia. In 1967, he came to Longwood University as professor of education, where he taught graduate school, and retired after over 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Kovacs of Lockwood, Calif. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lee Kovacs of Farmville; a son, Michael Kovacs and wife Kay of Bristol Virginia; five granddaughters and one grandson. Harold Rivers BIG STONE GAP – J. Harold Rivers, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in Lee County, Va., and lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap. He was a 1933 graduate of East Stone Gap, Va., High School. He was a retired shipping clerk with the Westmoreland Coal Co., with over 44 years service. He was a past president of the Stonega Veterans Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in a 17th Airborne Glider Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Legion Memorial United Methodist Church in Powell Valley, where he served as a past Sunday School teacher and held various offices within the church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Milton and Maggie (Phillips) Rivers, and by a brother, Hurdis Rivers. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Grace (Wilson) Rivers; one son, J.H.
