Surviving are two sisters, Lorene Gibson of Dryden, Va., and Elizabeth Burgess of Powhatan, Va., and several nieces and nephews. Paul Junior Ball TAZEWELL – Mr. Paul Junior Ball, age 65, passed away Friday, March 19, 2004, in a Bluefield, W.Va., hospital following a long illness. Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Luther and Violette Gilbert Lester. Mr. Ball was a disabled coal miner and mechanic and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ball was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Darren Ball, and one granddaughter, Ashley Michele Ball. Mr. Ball is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mrs. Linda Anders Ball; three sons, Stevie Ball of Tazewell, Darren Ball of the home and Randy Ball and son Timothy of Lebanon; two daughters, Rita Ball and Tina Ball, both of the home; one brother, Robert Lester of Baptist Valley, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Frances Ball of Tazewell; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren and special people in his life, Melinda Morales and C.J. Ruth Hayter Barnett RICHMOND – Ruth Hayter Barnett passed away March 19, 2004, in Retreat Hospital, Richmond. She was born in Abingdon. After graduation from Radford College, she moved to Richmond and made her home there. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kuhn Barnett, her parents, Paul Hayter and Louise Farmer Hayter, seven sisters and four brothers. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Richmond. Survivors are her nephew, Dr. William Cline and wife Betty of Abingdon; a great- niece, Sara Cline Werth of Hong Kong; a great-nephew, William R. Roger David Butler PINEY FLATS – Roger David Butler, age 57, of 205 Wesley Drive, passed away Friday, March 19, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Butler was born in Bristol Virginia on Dec. 7, 1946, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Edna Scarborough Butler. Mr. Butler was a retired nurse and was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Butler is survived by one sister, Paula Crowe, and two brothers, Jeffrey Crowe and Lee Butler. A private burial will be held at a later date in the County Cemetery. Lola Hopkins SALEM, Va. – Lola Jane Banks Hopkins, 91, formerly of Bristol Virginia, died on Thursday, March 18, 2004. She was a daughter of the late Laffette and Mary Craft Banks. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, and her beloved husband of 52 years, Roy E. Hopkins, who died on March 5, 1986. Her surviving family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Farene and Mack Bostic; granddaughter, Leisia Renette Cooley and husband Melvin; grandsons, Jonathan Mack Bostic, Mark Alan Bostic and wife Karin and Joel Hopkins Bostic and wife Christine; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Born on Jan. 3, 1922, in Cardiff, Wales, she was the daughter of the late Llewellyn and Florence Miller Cook. Mrs. McDaniel was a homemaker and a member of North Charleston United Methodist Church in North Charleston, S.C. She had lived in Bristol Virginia since 1986. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Trish McDaniel, her two grandchildren, Jamey and Marc McDaniel, all of Jonesborough, and five nieces and nephews. She lived most of her life in Bristol. She was preceded in death by her father in February 2001. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife, Alba Sloan, four brothers, Ray, Charlie, Raymond and David, and one sister, Juanita Gay. He was last employed by Clinchfield Railroad Company as a freight depot agent. Stoots BRISTOL, Tenn. – Lois J. Stoots, 76, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Winchester, Ky., the daughter of the late Walter P. and Mary Alice May Jones, and had lived in Bristol since 1947. She was the widow of Robert L. Stoots and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Hill and Dale Garden Club, the Steele Creek Ladies Golf Association and was an avid booster and fan of Bristol Tennessee High School athletics. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John T. Jones of Gainesville, Fla. Survivors include two sons, Robert L. Stoots Jr. and his wife Kathy Stoots of Kingsport and James W. Stoots and his wife Mary H. Stoots of Bristol, and four grandchildren, Emily Stoots and Jessica Stoots, both of Atlanta, Ellen Stoots, a student at Milligan College, and Andy Stoots and his wife Tiffany Stoots of Troy, Ala. Born Jan. 30, 1918, in Russell County, a son of the late Jessee and Isabelle Hicks Sutherland, he had spent most of his life in Cleveland and Lebanon. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired employee of the Island Creek Coal Co., Beatrice mine and a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 1374. He was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald Sutherland, a grandson, Anthony Eric Sutherland, two sisters, Gladys Sword and Laura Mae Sutherland, and four brothers, Clovis, Clyde, Wood and Frank Sutherland. Born on May 31, 1918, in Hagan, Va., a son of the late Rue Kyle and Zora Church Thomas, he has resided in this area most of his life. Mr. Thomas retired from Tri-City Paving in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Thomas was a member of Living Waters Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Beryl M. Thomas, Oct. 17, 2003, and by three sisters, Ira Thomas, Marie Bowlin and Mabel Burchett. Survivors include two sons and daughters in law, Graham and Sylvia Thomas of Kingsport and Jerry and Jo Thomas of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Rebecca Cox, John Thomas, Tony Thomas and Richard Thomas; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Seth and Gavin Cox, Pierce, Aja, Jared, Jacob, Jillian and Chandler Thomas; one sister, Mildred Cope of Rose Hill, Va., and several nieces and nephews. Darlene Wells NORTON – Darlene Brummitte Wells, 54, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Norton Community Hospital. Darlene was born in the Dorchester community to the late John E. and Lois Brummitte. She was a member of the Esserville Freewill Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Benny Wells Sr.; three sons and daughters-in- law, Benny and Renee Wells Jr., Scott and Vanessa Wells and Ricky and Susannah Wells, all of Norton; a sister, Susan Cowden, Bristol Tennessee; brother, John Edward Brummitte Jr. of Norton; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Leisa Brummitte of Wise, and two grandsons, Hunter Evan Wells and Aidan Riley Wells. She also is survived by special friends, Gary and Vonda Robbins of Norton, as well as her church family of the Esserville Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating.
