"Herb" Gentry, age 70, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, March 26, 2004, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. He was born on Jan. 29, 1934, in Johnson County, Tenn., the son of the late James and Mary Gentry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, was a member of the Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No.104 and the First Baptist Church in Damascus. Known as "Herb" to those that knew and loved him, he was owner of Herb’s Enterprises Inc. His businesses included Herb’s Fireworks, Mower Shop and Campground. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gentry; one daughter, Donna Cook and her husband Joe of Damascus; one brother, Jack Gentry and his wife Louise of Glen Burnie, Md.; one sister, Evelyn Miller and her husband John of Shady Valley, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2004, at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Alan McCullough officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Park, with the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites. Hankins NEW BERN, N.C. – Mrs. Mildred Wilson Hankins, age 81, of Rockledge Road, formerly of Richlands, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at a New Bern hospital following an illness of several months. She was born in Cliffield, Va., and was a daughter of the late Carl H. and Mary Kate Turner Wilson, both Tazewell County natives. She was a 1940 graduate of Richlands High School and, before leaving the Richlands area, was an active member of the Cedar Bluff Garden Club. She loved her flowers, was an avid gardener and an award winning flower designer. After moving to New Bern in 1988, she became an active member of the River Bend Garden Club until 2003. She and several close friends founded the River Bend Busy Bees, a quilting club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. William J. Hankins, whom she wed in 1940. Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Carlene Lacy and husband Rudy of Roanoke, and Mrs. Mary Lou Shortridge of Richlands; one brother, Mr. C.H. Wilson and wife Sylvia of Matoaca, Va., and nieces and nephews, Sarah Willis, Katherine Cleary and husband Kevin, Donna Altizer and husband Leonard, Mike Shortridge and wife Susie, Greg Wilson, Rodney Butler and wife Lisa and Jade Frashure and husband Bob. She was a member of the Madam Russell Methodist Church and had lived most of her life in Saltville. She had been living with her daughter in Danville for the past seven years. He was a man who loved God, family and life and was an exhorter of all good things, who will be missed by all. He was a retired employee of MSHA as a mine inspector, a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Zion Family Ministries. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Daniel Sturgill and Carrie Rogers Sturgill Green, and an infant brother, Adrian Sturgill. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Wilma Collier Sturgill of Greenville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Patrick and Dianna Sturgill of Greenville, Lt. Col. She was employed by Sullivan County School System as a cook at the old Blountville Elementary School and was assistant caretaker with her husband, Nick R. Wilson, at the Sullivan County Courthouse. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blountville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick R. Wilson, her parents, James and Nannie Hodge Fritts, a brother, James M. Fritts, three sisters, Roxie Snyder, Lucy Shaver and Susie Johnson, and three stepsons, Lloyd Wilson, Aaron Wilson and Lawrence Wilson. She is survived by a daughter, Pearl Templeton, Gunnings Community; two sons, Wiley and Walter Wilson of the home; a sister, Frances Rhymer, Cambridge House; three brothers, Charles Fritts, Joe Fritts and Bobby Fritts, all of Bristol Tennessee, and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. Born Feb. 19, 1939, in Lebanon, she was a daughter of Stella Mae Breeding of Honaker and the late Clyde Smith. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of Miller’s View Primitive Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by Lebanon Apparel for 25 years. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie Lewis Yates, and one brother, Gerald Breeding. In addition to her mother, survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Patricia Yates of Lebanon and Ricky and Debbie Yates of Castlewood; two sisters, Vivian Honaker of Honaker and Audrey Fitts of Victoria, Va.; two brothers, Jack Breeding of Mechanicsville, Va., and Dwight Breeding of Virginia; three grandchildren, Kayla Fields and her husband B.J., Adrienne Yates and her fiancé Bob Hale and Nathan Yates, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
