Ashburner Sr. RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. – Mr. James "Jim" Robert Ashburner Sr., 77, died March 24, 2004, at home after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Nashville, but lived most of his younger years in Bristol Virginia. He has called Russellville home for over 35 years. Jim was a veteran of World War II. He graduated with a degree in industrial engineering from Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., where he played for four years of the Virginia Tech "Hokie" basketball team. During his active years, he enjoyed golf, music and sports of all kinds. He retired as the plant manager from Blue Bell Manufacturing. He was a member of the Pritchard Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Russellville and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Visitation was Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville. The funeral service will be Friday, March 26, 2004, at 11 a.m. from Pinkard Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow in Franklin Memory Gardens. Officiating at the service will be Brother Johnny Richardson, Brother Jackie Richardson and Dr. Gene Balding. Mr. Ashburner was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur James Ashburner and Janie Mai (Crutcher) Ashburner; one sister, Dorothy "Dot" Lilly; brother-in-law, Robert D. Richardson; and one sister-in-law, Peggy (Webb) Richardson. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Peggy Ann (Richardson) Ashburner; three sons, James Robert Jr. and wife Carol of Lanett, Ala., William Charles and wife Suzanne of McHenry, Ill., and Steven Wilbur of Montevallo, Ala.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister-in-law, Sybil (Carlyle) Hedden of Fayetteville, Ga.; four brothers-in-law, Lon Lilly of Houston, Johnny (Nell) Richardson, Jackie (Bunny) Richardson and Billy Richardson, all of Russellville; four nieces; four great-nieces; four great-nephews; a close and very special friend, Grace Burcham, all of his extended Richardson family members; and many, many friends. Born July 14, 1953, in Scott County, Va., a son of the late Harold Babb and the late Betty Ruth Robbins Babb, he had lived in Richmond and Newport News, moving to Lebanon 14 years ago. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Babb; and a brother, David Scott Babb. Brown DAMASCUS – Bernice Widener Brown, age 87, passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She was a life-long resident of Washington County, Va., and a daughter of the late Monroe F. and Edith Cook Widener. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelsey A. Mrs. Feathers was born on Aug. 10, 1919, in Bristol Tennessee, a daughter to the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Esther Fleenor McConnell. Mrs. Feathers was a homemaker and a member of the Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Feathers was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lee Feathers. Mrs. Feathers is survived by two daughters, Esther Harkleroad and, Katherine Bowery; two sisters, Rita Stone and Rowena McConnell; and one special granddaughter, Andrea Wilson, all of Bristol Tennessee; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Kimbrell DORAN, Va. – Mr. Willard Doyan "Don" Kimbrell, age 77, departed this life Sunday morning, March 28, 2004, and went home to be with his Lord after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Arkansas, he served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He spent the majority of his life as a welder and retired in 1987 from the Bristol Virginia School Board. In his life, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing on his computer and reading his Bible. He attended the Raven Assembly of God and Trinity Assembly of God. Don was known for his faithfulness to pray for the needs of others. During his illness, he received tremendous support from his family and excellent care from his doctors, Dr. David H. Harpole Jr., Duke University Medical Center, Dr, Takiar Ahmed, Clinch Valley Medical Center, Dr. German Iosif and the wonderful 5th floor nursing staff of Clinch Valley Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Martha Barber Kimbrell, and a brother, Delbert Kimbrell. Maiden ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – John Milton Max Maiden, 75, 1284 Vanderbilt Drive, died at Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans Nursing Home Saturday, March 27, 2004. He was born near Abingdon in Washington County, Va., April 18, 1928, to Carter and Margaret Maiden. In 1945, he graduated high school and was drafted into the Army, where he became a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division, stationed in Japan. He came to Florida as an employee of General Electric Company in 1965 and, in 1967, established his own business, "Dixie Lawn Furniture." John Milton was a 25-year member and past president of the Lions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., Bristol Virginia and in Daytona Beach Shores, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Kitty; a son, Gary; three daughters, Patricia Sparks, Terry Conrad and Phyllis Cervantes; a sister, Rebecca; 10 grandchildren; and three and a half great-grandchildren. Born Aug. 24, 1917, in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late Roby Kernan and Zona Estella White Rasnake. The wife of the late Clyde Anderson Patrick, she had spent most of her life in this area and was formerly an Avon representative for the area. She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church on Big A Mountain, a charter member of the Countiss Rebekah Lodge of Honaker and the Swords Creek Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Kyle Rasnake, Ambrose Rasnake and Warner Rasnake; one sister, Zola Jackson; one son, Richard Frank Hicks; and one grandson, Greg Barrett Patrick. "Joe" Tester, age 39, went home to be with the Lord at 3:52 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Bristol Tennessee, on May 15, 1964, a son of Jerry Tester of Bristol Tennessee, and Gloria Evans Moye of Bristol Virginia, he has resided in this area his entire life. Mr. Tester was employed at Kysor Needham Panel System in Piney Flats. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Tester will be remembered as a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and brother who was an outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Franklin Tiller, one son, Harry Richard Tiller, two brothers, and three sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. He was a stonemason by trade and has built many beautiful rock walls in Buchanan and surrounding counties. He was a member of the Crossview Church of Christ.
