"Jake" Bland, age 71, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Washington County, Va., and was of the Presbyterian faith. Broce Jr. James Arthur "Jim" Broce Jr., 79, of V.I. Ranch Road, took his place with the Lord on Monday, April 5, 2004, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Arthur Broce Sr. and Beulah Cole Broce. He graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in 1942 and was a veteran of World War II, having proudly served in the U.S. Navy. Most of his professional career was spent in the printing industry. He was a life-long Lutheran, having been a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and as long as his health permitted, he was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed the fellowship of the Men’s Breakfast Group. He was a volunteer of the Avoca Fire Department and worked several years with the Avoca Little League and Pony League, serving as a player agent and president. He was also a president of the East High Patriot Band Boosters. Jim was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Katherine O. "Kay" Broce; a daughter, Connie Broce of Bristol; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Lynn Broce, of Greeneville; a grandson, Craig Osborne of Greeneville; a special "adopted" daughter, Suzanne DeBusk of Bristol; two sisters, Kathryn Broce and Elizabeth Ivey, both of Bristol; a special sister-in-law, Fran Dougherty of Bristol; and several cousins, nieces and nephews, especially Janine Richardson, Linda Crane, Jeff Dougherty, Mike Ivey and Craig Orfield. She was a member of the Powell Valley Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Big Stone Gap. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Gilliam; and a son, Kenneth Gilliam. Griffith Aaron N. Griffith GLADE SPRING – Daniel James "D.J." Griffith, age 12, and Aaron Nelson "Peanut" Griffith, age 5, and their dog, Lucky, joined their grandparents in heaven Saturday, April 3, 2004, from injuries sustained in a house fire. D. J. was a fifth grade student at Saltville Elementary School. He bravely fought the fire to rescue his brother, Raven, and went back to save his brother, Aaron, before the smoke overtook them. They are survived by their mother, Minnie Griffith, and a brother, Raven Griffith, both of Glade Spring; their father, Daniel Griffith of Bristol Tennessee; their friend, Scott Keller of Glade Spring; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
