Mary Burton MARION – Mary Glenn Barton Burton, age 64, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, in Asbury Place at Wytheville after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Smyth County, Va., on May 28, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Robert Don and Mary Margaret Tibbs Barton. She was a 1955 graduate of Sugar Grove High School, a 1957 graduate of Marion College and 1960 graduate of Radford University, with a B.S. degree in education. Mrs. Burton retired after 30 years of teaching in the Fairfax, Roanoke and Smyth County School Systems, having taught at Marion Primary School from 1972 till her retirement in 1996. For many years, she was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Outstanding Teachers and Chi Chapter of Bland, Smyth and Wythe Counties. Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, the Deborah Circle and the United Methodist Women. After retiring, she was able to enjoy her favorite hobbies of reading, gardening and playing golf. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister- in-law, Robert D. and Geneva Barton, and a brother-in-law, Robert L. Hoffman. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Patrick Glenn and Denise Burton of Wytheville; one sister, Donna Barton Hoffman of Marion; one brother and sister- in-law, John W. and Joanne Barton of Sugar Grove, Va.; four nephews, Lance and Donald Hoffman and Greg and Robert Barton; one niece, Ann Barton Hester; three great-nieces and two great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Buddy Miller and the Rev. James Pollock officiating. Williams and Mellie Mae Graham Williams. Mrs. Cox had moved to Bristol in 1992 and was a member of East Bristol Baptist Church. Marvin Crewey MARION – Marvin Crewey, age 73, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport. Born on July 27, 1930, he was the son of the late Robert Ray and Mazie Pearl Burchett Crewey. He was the owner of Crewey Paint and Decorating Inc., and was a well-known craftsman, specializing in home decor, painting and finishing. He was the co-owner of Country Haven Assisted Living. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and special friend to everyone. Mr. Crewey was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Johnny and Robert Crewey, and two sisters, Eleanor Ann Salter and Ovella Polansky. Born Nov. 12, 1984, she was a daughter of Douglas Hale of Honaker and Judy Ann Alexander Charles of Priest Fork, Va. A lifelong resident of the area, she attended Honaker Church of God. She was preceded in death by her great- grandmother, Nellie B. Corns, and paternal grandfather, James "Buke" Hale. In addition to her parents, survivors include her fiancé, Joshua Allan Hess of Swords Creek; her stepfather, Ralph Charles of Priest Fork; two sisters, Aletha Hale and Tiffany Lynn Hale, both of Honaker; one brother, Justin Allen Hale of Priest Fork; her paternal grandmother, Margaret Virginia Hale of Honaker; maternal grandparents, Jay Albert and Loraine Gilbert Alexander of Aberdeen, Md.; one nephew, Logan Shane Hale, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive. He was an avid golfer and lover of animals.
