Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. John J. Cooper BLOUNTVILLE – Rev. John J. Cooper, age 83, died Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was born on March 14, 1921, in Coshocton, Ohio, and was a son of the late John Dell Cooper and Lora Smith Cooper. Rev. Cooper received his doctorate degree from the University of Colorado. Before he became ordained in the Lutheran Church, Rev. Cooper was a professor of choral music and a college administrator. He was a former instructor at Tennessee Technological University, Louisiana Tech University and Virginia Western Community College. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had served as a teaching missionary in Thailand for the Lutheran Church in America. After becoming ordained, he served as the pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Radford and at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Konnarock, Va. Survivors include his wife, Marcia Cooper; a daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Tommy Hughes of Blountville; a granddaughter, Katie Fulton; mother-in-law, Margaret Lambert of Blountville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Russell and Jean Lambert of Blountville, Richard and Sallie Lambert of Kingsport and Mark and Judy Lambert of Virginia Beach, Va., and a cousin, Constance English of Ohio. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Ray Stanley and Carson Stanley, a sister, Helen Stanley, a dear nephew, Travis Stanley, and one very special companion, J.R. Silcox.
