Webb, 90, Johnson City Vada Bernice Biggs BRISTOL, Tenn. – Vada Bernice Biggs, age 73, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 19, 2004, in the Wellmont Hospice House. Mrs. Biggs was born in Rogersville, Tenn., a daughter of the late Hiram Patton and Margaret Owen Creech. She had lived in the Bristol area for the past 45 years, was a retired supervisor from the Bristol Regional Medical Center and was a member of the Belle Meadows Baptist Church TN Campus. Mrs. Biggs was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Biggs. Mrs. Biggs is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John Biggs and wife Norma; three daughters, Peggy Biggs, Connie Ball and Windy Cross; two granddaughters, Melissa Joyner and Tammy Biggs; three great-grandchildren, Kayla Taylor, Brandon Joyner and Aaron Lawson; one sister, Ruby Hiatt, of Lexington, Ky.; several nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends. Claudia Brown Claudia Brown, 88, formerly of Bristol, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, Ind. She was born in Bristol Virginia in 1917 and was the daughter of the late William Woodard and Maude Hedrick Woodard. Claudia worked as secretary for Farm Best Dairy for 28 years. She was a 50-year member and former matron of Border City Order of the Eastern Star 162 and a member of East Rogersville Baptist Church. She was also a former member of Central Christian Church in Bristol Tennessee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Brown, and a son, William E. Brown. Survivors include her son, Guy N. Brown and his wife Laura Nelle of Lafayette; a daughter-in-law, Janice Brown of Rogersville, Tenn.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Charlie Daniels NORTON – Charles Lonnie Daniels, 84, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at his residence. Born to the late John and Myrtle Daniels, he was a lifelong resident of Norton, a community that he dearly loved and served. As a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was a navigator in both World War II and the Korean conflict. Following the war, he and his brother founded Daniels Plumbing and Heating. He served as its president until his retirement. Community service was a strong point of Charlie’s life. He helped organize and was the first president of the Norton Jaycees. He twice was elected president of the Wise County Chamber of Commerce and in 1961, he was awarded its coveted "Wise County Citizen of the Year" for his distinguished service to his community. He served on various boards of directors, including both the City of Norton and Wise County Industrial Authorities and the First Commonwealth Bank. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Charlie is probably best remembered for his enthusiastic service in the Lions Club, both locally and internationally. He was the recipient of 20 Lions Club International President’s Awards and also received the Lion’s Ambassador of Goodwill Award. Three sisters, Mabel Daniels, Hope Begley and Gladys Begley, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Daniels; sons and daughters-in-law, Cliff and Pat Daniels of Norton, Ed and Teresa Daniels, Wise, and Fred and Mary Ann Daniels of Norton; daughters and sons-in-law include Vicki "Tori" and Bob Smith of Big Stone Gap, Mary Turner, Norton, and Katie and Greg McDilda, of Scott Depot, W.Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law are James D. Daniels and Tom and Mary Sue Daniels, all of Norton, and John and Betsy Daniels of Abingdon; sisters and brothers-in-law are Evelyn and Don Cassell, Chattanooga, Hazel and James Watts, Wise, Norma Jean and Milton Wilson, Jasper, Ga., and Millie and Jack Bentley of Pound, and grandchildren, Randy and Sam Daniels, Melinda Ruble, Stacey Daniels, Shane Daniels, Corrie Turner Smith, Nathan Turner, Mary Beth Roberts, Joy McDilda, Joshua and Jessica Daniels, Shannon Salyer and Caleb, Zack and Helen Daniels. She was born May 1, 1913, on Weaver’s Creek, in Russell County, Va., to the late John P. and Edna Cook Kendrick. She was married to Lon N. Dooley, who preceded her in death in 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Musick of Finney, Va., and Ruth Combs of Cleveland, Va., and a sister-in-law, Agnes Flick of Kingsport. Survivors include one son, John and his wife Sue Emory Dooley of Foley, Ala.; two daughters, Nancy and her husband Paul Tobergte of Yankeetown, Fla., and Carla Sue MacCue of the home; five granddaughters and their husbands, Paula and Tom O’Keefe of Glendale, Calif., Lisa and Roger Green of Cincinnati, Amelia and Dennis Daniel of Broken Bow, Okla., Lara and Patrick Hutchins of Valley Cottage, N.Y., and Amanda Dooley of Cincinnati, and nine great-grandchildren, Ian Green, Calvin, Chloe and Celia Hutchins, Will and Adam Daniel and Olivia, Lillian and Adele O’Keefe. She is also survived by her sister, Nadyne Combs of Abingdon; her brother and his wife, Claude and Mildred Kendrick of Dublin, Va.; five sisters- in-law and one brother-in-law, Mary Barron, Ada Axsom, Frances Wood, Cupid Bryant and Peggy Bradley, all of Kingsport, and Charles Dooley of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. She will also be greatly missed by her dear close friends, Linda and Guy Skeens of Lebanon, and their daughter and her husband, Rebecca and Kurt Kahns of Lynchburg, Va., as well as all her many friends in the Carterton community. Bennie was a lifelong resident of Russell County, having attended the Baptist Mission School in Council, Va., and graduating from Honaker High School. During World War II, she and Lon lived in Baltimore for three years and, upon returning home, moved to Carterton, where Bennie had lived for 60 years. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as director of the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Bennie was a member of the Springfield-Pleasant Hill Women’s Missionary Union and she served for 13 years as director of the New Lebanon Association WMU. A daughter of the late Walter A. and Margaret Farley Slatery, she was born Sept. 13, 1910. A lifelong resident of Bristol, she was a graduate of Virginia High School and had attended Virginia Intermont College. A former employee of Nickels Manufacturing, she was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church and attended Kingsway Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Slatery, and her brothers, Harry and Johnny Slatery. She was the widow of James A. Newland. Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Lynn Newland and his wife Helen of Waynesville, N.C., and Walter Newland and his wife Shirley of Bristol Virginia; seven grandchildren, Ernie Newland and his wife Nancy, Robert Newland and his wife Cathy, James Newland and his wife Charito, Jimmy A. Basil Stanley CLEVELAND, Va. – Basil Stanley, age 89, of Route 82, passed away at his home April 19, 2004. Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Ira and Corey Stanley. He was a retired coal miner and of the Old Regular Baptist faith. His wife, Ruby Brooks Stanley, a son, Kenneth Ray Stanley, and a daughter, Linda Stanley Garrett, preceded him in death. Stiltner CONWAY, S.C. – Zachary Brian Stiltner, 46 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2004, in Conway Medical Center, Conway, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., June 12, 1957, he was a son of the late Virlo and Lois Dotson Stiltner. He was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 1975 and was a disabled coal miner, formerly employed by Harman Mining Corporation, Harman, Va., a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. He was a former member of Claypool Hill Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Stiltner was an avid sportsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and the Green Bay Packers. Also, he was a talented guitar and bass player, whose musical abilities were handed down to him from his father. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Stiltner, Conway; children, Leigha Renee and Adam Zachary Stiltner, Wardell, Va.; former wife, Gail Stiltner, Wardell; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cassondra (Sonnie) and David LaCombe, Yankton, S.D., and Garnette and Rickie Owens, Grundy, and five brothers and sisters-in- law, Warren and Angela Griffith, Columbia, S.C., Barry and Sharon Stiltner, Hartford City, Ind., Richard and Liz Stiltner, Maxie, Va., Virlo and Sandy Stiltner, Grundy, and Chuck and Lisa Stiltner, Grundy. Hannah Taylor RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. – Mrs. Hannah Elizabeth Ascue Taylor, 86, of the Belfast community, passed away Monday, April 19, 2004, at Pleasantview Adult Home in Honaker. A native of Tazewell County, she was born Sept. 27, 1917, a daughter of the late Russell Henry and Margie Brown Ascue of the Paintlick and Wardell communities. She graduated from Richlands High School in 1933 as salutatorian at the age of 16. She came to the Belfast community in 1936, when she married G. Garnett Taylor, who preceded her in death in 1983. She was a 70-year member of the Belfast United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and also janitor. She was one of the early founders of the youth league. She was a very active member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, having served as president. She was a charter member of the Belfast Extension Homemakers. She was honored by being chosen Russell County Homemaker of the Year. She was a very active in the Russell County Fair. Well-known for her cooking and sewing talents, she was often asked to judge exhibits at other county fairs. She was also a charter member of the Belfast Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Martin and Catherine Lee. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Taylor Pauley of Belfast; one son, Glenn C. Taylor and his wife Carol of Belfast; four grandchildren, Cindy Pauley Garrett and husband Jeff of Lebanon, Eddy Pauley of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Jennifer Taylor Settle and husband Jamie of Belfast and Michael Taylor and wife Brandie of Belfast; step-grandson, Barry W. Pauley of Panama City Beach, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Dawn Crabtree, Jill Garrett, Tommy Settle, Taylor Settle and Sydney Taylor; two nephews; extended family that includes special care givers, Linda Kay Musick, Bernice Hess, "Willy," "Kelly," "Sam," Lisa, Carol, Regina and Beverly Fuller, and a special friend at Pleasantview, Mrs. Lola Shell. Webb, age 90, of 600 Woodhaven Dr., died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Webb was a Sullivan County (Piney Flats) native and a longtime resident of Johnson City. He was a son of the late John D. and Mattie E. Smith Webb. He graduated from Mary Hughes High School in 1931 and graduated from Johnson City Business College. He retired from the Tennessee State Revenue Department after 32 years of service, as supervisor of the sales tax division of East Tennessee and he began his service with the initiation of the state sales tax. Mr. Webb was a longtime member of First Christian Church and a member of the Loyal Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a former Johnson City Civitan member for 26 years and served as treasurer. He was proud of being a former Johnson City Little League manager and coached the State Championship Team in 1959. Roy was an avid golfer and charter member of Pine Oaks Golf Course and had recorded three holes-in-one during his career. As a later hobby, he very much enjoyed dancing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Beal Webb, in 1997, two brothers, Raymond Webb and Bernie Webb, and two sisters, Gay Walker and Ruth Bullington. Survivors include one son, Richard O. Webb and wife Julia S., Greer, S.C.; two granddaughters, Sharon Morehart and husband Mark, Rock Hill, S.C., and Paige Lambert and husband Kevin, Tigard, Ore.; three great-grandchildren, Miriam and Nathan Morehart and Parker Lambert; one sister, Ruby Hart, Reddington Shores, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.
