Gilliam Funeral Home of Big Stone Gap is in charge of arrangements. Charlie Daniels NORTON – Charles Lonnie Daniels, 84, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at his residence. Born to the late John and Myrtle Daniels, he was a lifelong resident of Norton, a community that he dearly loved and served. As a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was a navigator in both World War II and the Korean conflict. Following the war, he and his brother founded Daniels Plumbing and Heating. He served as its president until his retirement. Community service was a strong point of Charlie’s life. He helped organize and was the first president of the Norton Jaycees. He twice was elected president of the Wise County Chamber of Commerce and in 1961, he was awarded its coveted "Wise County Citizen of the Year" for his distinguished service to his community. He served on various boards of directors, including both the City of Norton and Wise County Industrial Authorities and the First Commonwealth Bank. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Charlie is probably best remembered for his enthusiastic service in the Lions Club, both locally and internationally. He was the recipient of 20 Lions Club International President’s Awards and also received the Lion’s Ambassador of Goodwill Award. Three sisters, Mabel Daniels, Hope Begley and Gladys Begley, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Daniels; sons and daughters-in-law, Cliff and Pat Daniels of Norton, Ed and Teresa Daniels, Wise, and Fred and Mary Ann Daniels of Norton; daughters and sons-in-law include Vicki "Tori" and Bob Smith of Big Stone Gap, Mary Turner, Norton, and Katie and Greg McDilda, of Scott Depot, W.Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law are James D. Gibson Jr., age 84, formerly of Grundy, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 20, 2004. He was born in Bluefield, W.Va., and later moved to Grundy, where he spent most of his life before moving to Abingdon in 1991. He was a World War II veteran and attended Peabody College in Nashville. He was a retired businessman beginning in the oil business and becoming the founder and president of Bob Gibson Powder Company in Grundy, which grew into two other explosive companies, Gibson Explosives in Duffield, Va., and Lily Explosives in Beckley, W.Va. While living in Grundy, he served on the town council, the water commission, Chamber of Commerce, and he was the chairman of the Democratic Party. He was an active member of the American Legion and was a member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge in Grundy. He also served on the Board of Directors at Dominion Bank. While in Abingdon, he enjoyed being a member of the Virginia Highlands Society, Abingdon Historical Society and Glenrochie County Club. He was a member of the Grundy Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and attended Highlands Fellowship in Abingdon. He was a supporter of the University of Virginia Athletic Foundation. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was the son of the late Robert W. Gibson Sr. and Nannie Linkous Gibson and was preceded in death by two wonderful sons, Robert W. Gibson III and Steven Frazier Gibson. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Martha Lee Gibson; one daughter, Nancy Witt and husband A.D. of Abingdon; six grandchildren, Meredith and Kevin Heneshaw, Jill Gibson, Alex and Emily Gibson, Robin and Ben Harrell, Allison Witt and Rebecca Gibson; and was blessed with four special great-grandchildren and one special nephew, Brandon T. Jane Musick HONAKER – Mrs. Jane Russell Sykes Musick, age 45, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born Sept. 15, 1958, in Richlands, she was a daughter of Janie Ellen Gillespie Sykes of Honaker and the late Russ Clater "Chuck" Sykes. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Baptist faith. A 1976 graduate of Honaker High School, she was currently attending Southwest Virginia Community College and was employed as a teacher’s aide at Honaker Elementary School. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, James William Musick, one brother, David Wayne Sykes, great-nephew, Dustin Peck, and several aunts and uncles. In addition to her mother, survivors include two daughters, April Looney of South Carolina and Ashley Brooke Musick of the home; one granddaughter, Jada Ann Looney of South Carolina; one sister, Carla Jean Sykes of Honaker; two special nephews, Daniel Dewayne Penley Sykes and Brandon Dwayne Miller Sykes, both of Honaker, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Rathmer Cooper Rife GRUNDY – Rathmer Cooper Rife, 86 years of age, of Route 5, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George and Patty Smith Cooper. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Church of Christ and was a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Rife was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Rife, Feb. 19, 1994. She is survived by four daughters, Elsie and husband James Earl Stevenson, Grundy, Doris and husband Joe Blankenship, Grundy, Myrtle and husband Ronnie Daniels, Grundy, and Beatrice Simpkins, Chesapeake, Ohio, and two sons, James Looney, Catlettsburg, Ky., and Tom Rife Jr., Pasadena, Texas. Also, she is survived by 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Fay Rife, four sisters and four brothers. Shell CLEVELAND, Va. – William Gerald (Flop) Shell, 63, died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 4, 1940, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late William Henry Shell and the late Viola Mae Torumpower Shell, he had lived in Cleveland the past 35 years. He was a member of the Cleveland Baptist Church. Survivors include his uncle and aunt, Harry T. Shell and Paulena Shell, Hamilton, Ohio, and his cousins, Roger Shell, Hickory, N.C., Richard Shell, Martinsville, Va., Mina Shell, Cleveland, and Glenda Shell, Seattle, Wash. Stiltner CONWAY, S.C. – Zachary Brian Stiltner, 46 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2004, in Conway Medical Center, Conway, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., June 12, 1957, he was a son of the late Virlo and Lois Dotson Stiltner. He was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 1975 and was a disabled coal miner, formerly employed by Harman Mining Corporation, Harman, Va., a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. He was a former member of Claypool Hill Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Stiltner was an avid sportsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and the Green Bay Packers. Also, he was a talented guitar and bass player, whose musical abilities were handed down to him from his father. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Stiltner, Conway; children, Leigha Renee and Adam Zachary Stiltner, Wardell, Va.; former wife, Gail Stiltner, Wardell; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cassondra (Sonnie) and David LaCombe, Yankton, S.D., and Garnette and Rickie Owens, Grundy, and five brothers and sisters-in- law, Warren and Angela Griffith, Columbia, S.C., Barry and Sharon Stiltner, Hartford City, Ind., Richard and Liz Stiltner, Maxie, Va., Virlo and Sandy Stiltner, Grundy, and Chuck and Lisa Stiltner, Grundy. He is also survived by nine nephews, five nieces, one great-nephew and several aunts and uncles, including a special uncle, Boone Stiltner, Oakwood, Va. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bessie and Taylor Stiltner, maternal grandparents, Nannie and Ellis Dotson, one sister, Druicia Carol Stiltner, and one brother, Howe Stiltner. Webb JOHNSON CITY – Roy W. Webb, age 90, of 600 Woodhaven Dr., died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Webb was a Sullivan County (Piney Flats) native and a longtime resident of Johnson City. He was a son of the late John D. and Mattie E. Smith Webb. He graduated from Mary Hughes High School in 1931 and graduated from Johnson City Business College. He retired from the Tennessee State Revenue Department after 32 years of service, as supervisor of the Sales Tax Division of East Tennessee, and he began his service with the initiation of the state sales tax. Mr. Webb was a longtime member of First Christian Church and a member of the Loyal Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a former Johnson City Civitan member for 26 years and served as treasurer. He was proud of being a former Johnson City Little League manager and coached the State Championship Team in 1959. Roy was an avid golfer and charter member of Pine Oaks Golf Course and had recorded three holes-in-one during his career. As a later hobby, he very much enjoyed dancing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Beal Webb, in 1997, two brothers, Raymond Webb and Bernie Webb, and two sisters, Gay Walker and Ruth Bullington. Survivors include one son, Richard O. Webb and wife Julia S., Greer, S.C.; two granddaughters, Sharon Morehart and husband Mark, Rock Hill, S.C., and Paige Lambert and husband Kevin, Tigard, Ore.; three great-grandchildren, Miriam and Nathan Morehart and Parker Lambert; one sister, Ruby Hart, Reddington Shores, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Webb will be conducted Friday, April 23, 2004, at 7 p.m. in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Frank Smith officiating. The graveside service will be held Saturday, April 24, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Poplar Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, Piney Flats. Active pallbearers will be Mark Morehart, Nathan Morehart, Duard Walker, Gary Walker, David Webb and Scotty Webb. Those planning to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. Saturday.
