(Punk) Dorton Jr., age 66, passed on from this life to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 22, 2004. Punk, a lifelong resident of Russell County, was the only son of the late Jennings Dorton. He is survived by his loving mother, Elizabeth Brown, and stepfather, Henry Brown. He is also survived by his wife and love of his life, Lorine Dorton; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Billy Dorton and Bob and Ruby Dorton. He is also survived by two precious granddaughters Ana Dorton and Brittany Dorton, who brought happiness to him daily. Punk was nicknamed by his Aunt Liz Dorton Castle. He learned the art of trading at an early age and carried this trade throughout his life. He served as deputy clerk for Russell County for approximately 15 years. Some of the many successful partners during his lifetime include the late A.B. Chafin and Larry Sykes. He is survived by other partners to include Bob Ring, R.D. Snead, Ralph Snead, B.C. Umberger, Gaines Dickenson, Jack Bartee and Mark Nelson. Punk contributed to his community by dedicating his time and knowledge as a director of The First Bank and Trust Company. During his tenure of 18 years the bank grew from 2 to 15 offices. He recently served as chairman of the board of directors. Punk lived a life that we all should take notice of. He was willing to find the good in others and loved to see others prosper. He accepted the most precious gift of salvation from our Savior and dedicated his life to serving his family and fellow man. Punk was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church and was also a charter member of the local International Organization of Odd Fellows. The entire family would like to thank all of the family, friends and neighbors who have reached out to them during this time. Vernon James Reed Jr. TAZEWELL COUNTY – Mr. Vernon James Reed Jr., age 77, of the Daw Road section, died Monday, April 5, 2004, following a prolonged battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (P.S.P.). A native of Slippery Rock, Pa., he lived in Cedar Bluff since 1980. A graduate of Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa., he spent most of his career with Republic Steel of Cleveland and resided in Lyndhurst, Ohio. He retired as a senior executive of Sandy Ridge Energy Corporation, Richlands. Living family members include his wife of 52 years, Ardelle McMillen Reed; three daughters, Carol Short and husband Louis of Raven, Va., Deborah Reed of Parker, Colo., and Lisa Lloyd and husband Ken of Lakewood, Colo.; four grandchildren; one step- grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. Mr. Sexton was born in Smyth County to the late Clinton Sexton and Amanda Lessie Smith Sexton and was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Rouse, a brother, Oscar Sexton, and two sisters, Lena Reedy and Wilma Russell. He was retired from Brunswick Corporation after 38 years of employment and attended the Gethsemane Baptist Church. Mr. Sexton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He was a life member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667 and an active member of the Smyth County Republican Party. He was a native of Hiltons, Va., and had returned to Bristol in 1990, moving from Rockford, Ill. Mr. Smith was employed by Blount Brothers Corporation based out of Montgomery, Ala. He was a member of Hiltons United Methodist Church. He served in the 3rd Army in World War II and was a lifetime member of the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975.
