He was born in Troutdale to the late Pete and Della Billings Anderson and was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. He was a member of the Volney Baptist Church. Survivors include four sisters, Mary Tolliver Street, Maryland, Hattie Testerman, Marion, Dollie Cullop, Troutdale, and Silvegene Cannella, Joppa, Md., and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the Volney Baptist Church, with Rev. Douglas Halsey and Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairwood Cemetery. The body will be taken to the home, 4111 Rocky Hollow Road, Troutdale, Monday at 3 p.m., where the family will receive friends. The body will be taken to the church Tuesday at noon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Graham Ball, also six brothers and five sisters. She was a member of the Chapel Of Love Church. Robert Delapp Jr. CHARLOTTESVILLE – Mr. Robert "Bob" Delapp Jr., 84, entered into eternal rest on April 21, 2004. He was the son of the late Jannie Shoemaker Clouden and Robert Delapp Sr. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in France, Rhineland, Scotland and England. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. After the military, he became a certified diesel mechanic and was employed by Pope’s Ready Mix Company until he retired. He was preceded in death by his stepparents, Signora Delapp and William "Bill" Clouden, as well as two infant sons. Bob was united in marriage to Laura Belle Stigger Delapp, and to this union he leaves to cherish his memory, Andrew Allen of Charlottesville, Diane Key and son-in-law Howard Key of Schuyler, Va., William Delapp of Bristol Virginia and Joanne Delapp-Rumsey of Charlottesville and friend Joe Cannon of Norfolk; Rebecca Newton, stepsister, of Abingdon; Robert Stigger, brother-in-law, of New River, and Hazel Miller, sister-in-law, of New River. He was blessed to have 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends. Ricky Lewis Kestner Ricky Lewis Kestner, age 55, formerly of Bristol Virginia, went to be with the Lord, Saturday April 24, 2004, from the Brook Haven Manor, in Kingsport. He was born Feb. 18, 1949, in Bristol Virginia, to the late Lewis P. Kestner and Katheryn Tate Kestner. He lived most of his life in the Bristol area and enjoyed music and golf. He was formerly employed by Sprint and was currently employed by D.R.T. in Greeneville, Tenn. Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Preston Kestner. He is survived by his mother, Katheryn Kestner, Bristol Virginia, and two brothers, Gary P. Kestner and Von D. Kestner, both of Blountville. She retired to Bristol Virginia in 1981. Her husband, Phillip Rushing, parents Fulton and Sarah Byrum, brothers, Lewis and Pressley Byrum, and sisters, Luella Stevens, Viola Phillips and Hazeline Hudson, preceded her in death. Smith CHILHOWIE – Virgil E. "Gene" Smith, age 74, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2004, in the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. Bob Gelain Surber LAWRENCE, Kan. – Bob Gelain Surber, 71, died April 24, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Born in Glen Lyn, Va., he was the son of Paul and Mary Jane Brown Surber. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict from December 1950 to December 1954. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University in 1959. He entered the radio business with WMEV in Marion that same year. His career in radio took him to seven radio stations in Virginia, Tennessee, Texas and Kansas, where he worked as staff announcer and news director. He joined KTVC-TV in Dodge City, Kan., in 1961, where he was anchor and news director. In 1964, he was named general manager of KUPK-TV in Garden City, Kan., where he remained until his retirement in 1990. During his tenure at KUPK-TV, he also served as vice president at the parent organization of KAKE- TV/Radio in Wichita, Kan. In addition, he was general manager of the Western Kansas Divison of the Kakeland stations, which also included KLBY-TV of Colby, Kan. He worked as a freelance television and radio announcer in his own agency of Surber Broadcasting until his death. He had been a resident of Lawrence for the past 13 years. Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Sue Surber and Becky Gelaine Gonzales; two granddaughters and a brother, O.F. "Chip" Surber. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 26, 2004, in Lawrence. Ward VANSANT, Va. – Mr. Millard Charles Ward, age 72, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late Rufus and Virginia Hylton Ward. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Biddie Evelee Wilson Ward, three sisters, Rosie Ward Johnson, Nora Cole and Pearl Campbell, three brothers, Herbert Ward, Owen Ward and Perry Ward, and a stepson, David Johnson. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation. Mr. Ward was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired coal miner and a member of the U.M.W.A. Mr. Ward is survived by one daughter, Deborah Elaine Ward of Abingdon; one granddaughter, Bonita Dusty Cole of Red Ash, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Samatha Cole and Tyler Cole; four stepsons, James Copenhaver, Bristol Virginia, Gene Copenhaver, Indiana, Bobby Copenhaver, Michigan, and Ronnie Vandyke of Michigan; four stepdaughters, Guyna Day of Rock, W.Va., Wilma Hagerman, Bradshaw, W.Va., and Sherry Johnson and Kim Kennedy, both of Compton Mountain, Va., and several step-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Millard Charles Ward will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday April 28, 2004, in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, Va., with Revs. Jack Ward, Thomas Ward and Ralph Horton officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 DAV.
