Buddy was of the Baptist faith, a retired miner from the Bethlehem Coal Company, a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, a member of the Pound VFW Post 9600, an active member of the Wise County Democratic Party Committee for 60 years and a charter member of the Wise County Democratic Hall of Fame. Mr. Cantrell was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny W. Cantrell and Etta Mae (Short) Cantrell, his brothers, Jimmy Kyle Cantrell, Dodd Gerald Cantrell, Glenn Cantrell and Frank Cantrell, and his sisters, Anna Faye Mullins, Christine Mullins, Glessie Wolford and Ruby Jane Mullins. Survivors include spouse, Helen M. (Taylor) Cantrell of the home; sons, Rodney Cantrell, Pound, David Cantrell, Pound, Max Cantrell, Pound, and Rocky Cantrell, Pound; sisters, Linda Gail Mullins, Pound, Mary E. Carr, age 79, passed away on April 27, 2004, at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in Abingdon, a son to the late Robert and Lilly Shell Carr. He had spent most of his life in the Bristol area and worked as a painting contractor. Mr. Carr was a member of Fellowship Chapel, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, a deacon and a member of the choir. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II, where he earned a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and several other medals. Mr. Carr was also a member of the Woodmen of the World and the VFW. He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Clark Carr. Survivors include daughter, Shirley Ogle and husband Monte of Bristol Tennessee; son, Clifford Wayne Carr and wife Terri of Bristol Tennessee; grandchildren, Steven Ogle, Brian Ogle, Nicole Carr and Adam Carr. Larry Gilmer Jones RICHLANDS – Mr. Larry Gilmer "Cotton" Jones, age 52, of the Doran Bottom section, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at his home. Born June 5, 1951, in Richlands, he was a son of the late Henry McDonald Jones Sr. and Jane Ann Smith Jones. He had spent most of his life in the area and was a member of the Honaker United Methodist Church. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Andrea Jones, and one special son, Shawn William Ford. Survivors include one brother, Henry McDonald "Mac" Jones Jr. of Johnson City; his significant other, Peggy C. Ford of the home; one uncle and aunt, Warren and Hazel Harrison of Rosedale, Va.; special care taker, Patsy Green, and six cousins also survive. Justice Joseph W. Justice, 100 years, seven months and 22 days old, of the Golden Age Retirement Center of Claypool Hill, Va., passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, following a short illness. Born in Mingo County, W. Va., he was a son of the late Morgan and Jane Oosley Justice. He was a resident of Buchanan County several years and a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a member of Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF & AM of Grundy, a former member of Grundy IOOF Lodge 17 and a former coal miner. He was a retired employee of Norfolk and Western Railway as an engineer and conductor, with 41 years of service, and a member of Railroad Brotherhood. Mr. Justice was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Payne Justice, March 9, 1999. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Justice, and four sons, Dale, Clinton, Joe and Roger Justice. He is survived by five daughters, Thelma Vandyke, Cedar Bluff, Eleanor Newberry, Sugar Grove, Va., Margaret Skeens, Sarasota, Fla., Betty Smith, Vacaville, Calif., and Bonnie Windham, Center, Texas, and two sons, Thomas Justice, Lynchburg, Va., and Wayne Justice, Princeton, W.Va. Mr. Leonard was born on Sept. 9, 1924, in Washington County, Va., to the late Lee O. and Mamie Barker Leonard. Mr. Leonard was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy in World War II, and received the Purple Heart. He had lived all his life in the Bristol area, was retired from Washington County as a station operator and was retired from Black Diamond Enterprise. Mr. Leonard was a member of Gum Hill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Norville, Ted and Rex Leonard, and by one sister, Ardis Hughes. James Harvey Slate RAVEN, Va. – Mr. James Harvey Slate, age 74, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late John Dewey and Garnett Taylor Slate. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of U.M.W.A. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Pinion, and three brothers, Raymond P. Slate, John Douglas Slate and Earshel W. Slate. Wilkinson EDEN, N.C. – James Samuel Wilkinson, 93, of 1060 Friendly Road, died Tuesday at Morehead Memorial Hospital. Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church in Eden, with burial to follow on Saturday, May 1, at noon at Rosedale Baptist Church in Abingdon. Mr. Wilkinson was born in Washington County, Va. He was a graduate of William King High School in Abingdon, attended Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va., and graduated from Danville Technical College. He was a World War II Marine veteran, retired from Fieldcrest Mills and later worked as a security guard for 19 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Carter Wilkinson, and an infant son, James Hunter Wilkinson. He is survived by son, James Stuart Wilkinson and wife Sara of Reidsville; daughter, Angelina Wilkinson of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Beverly Wright, John Wilkinson, Michael Wilkinson and Heather May: four great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
