Asbury SALTVILLE – Mrs. Lucille Rector Asbury, age 75, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.T. Asbury. She was a retired school teacher of the Smyth County School System, after 35 years. Mrs. Asbury was a member of the Madam Russell United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and piano player for many years. Mrs. Asbury was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Survivors: two sons, Eddie Asbury and wife Joyce, Saltville, and Mark Asbury, Charlottesville; two daughters, Debbie Ogle and husband E.P., Marion, and Lori Gillespie and husband Dennis, Rich Valley, Va.; two brothers, Elmer Rector, Edgewater, Fla., and Troy Rector, Edgewater; one sister, Anne Antrobus, Charlottesville; six grandchildren, Annie Ogle, Megan Ogle, Trey Asbury, Tina Blevins, Caitlyn Asbury and Maddi Gillespie; three great-grandchildren, Eli Asbury, Luke Asbury and Sonya Blevins, and several nieces and nephews. George Babb George "Junior" Babb, 72, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 15, 2004, from NHC in Johnson City, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Junior was born in Rye Cove, Va., and was a son of the late William Kenneth Babb and Gladys Starnes Babb. He has lived in Bristol for over 50 years and was a graduate of Tennessee High School. Junior worked for Interstate Lanes, Bowl Mor and Food City and attended Oak Dale Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roy "Rod" Babb, father-in-law, Martin Worley, and brother-in-law, Danny Worley. Freeman A. Barton HONAKER – Mr. Freeman Arnold Barton, age 54, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, Tenn. Born Sept. 2, 1949, in Honaker, he was a son of the late Rev. Francis M. Barton and Hazel Jackson Barton. A U.S. Army veteran, he had served in the Vietnam War and obtained a Purple Heart while serving his country. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Barton, Jr., one sister, Loretta McGlothlin, two brothers-in-law, Claude Stinson and James Miller, and one niece, Dorothy Inman. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Connie Barton of the home; one daughter, Jessica Barton O’Quinn of Lebanon; one granddaughter, Jada O’Quinn of Lebanon; four brothers, Henry Barton of Vansant, Va., Marvin Barton of Yorktown, Va., J.C. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. David Robert Miller BLUFF CITY – David Robert Miller, 57, died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his residence. A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he was the son of the late Ervin and Viola Massengill Miller. He was a graduate of Bluff City High School. Mr. Miller was a U.S. Army veteran and honorably served his country in Vietnam. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry. Mr. Miller was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle rider and a member of the VFW in Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by a grandson, Ervin Tanner Sparks. Edith Nelson WISE – Edith "Peggy" Nelson, 73, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the Norton Community Hospital, Norton. She was a strong believer in the Christian faith and a lifelong political activist. Her support of and love for the Republican Party influenced her entire family, many of whom are also active in the party. Active in political campaigns for her entire life, Peggy served with distinction on the Wise County Electoral Board. In addition, she had a lasting love of gardening and was a member of the Coeburn Mountain Extension Home Makers Club. Mrs. Nelson was born in Parrott, Va., on Oct. 14, 1930, daughter of the late Parris Edward and Lillie Melinda Albert. Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert H. Wilson, brothers, Richard Albert and James Albert, dear sister, Freda Morris, precious granddaughter, Sarah Nicole Wilson, and a special niece, Carrie Albert. Ann Caruso Short NORTON – Ann Caruso Short, 79, passed away Friday, May 14, 2004, at Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond. Mrs. Short was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Norton, to the late Frank and Virginia Caruso. She was formerly employed by the Wise County School Board, teaching at Old Hurricane Elementary, West Norton Elementary and Wise Primary, where she taught until her retirement. Mrs. Short was a graduate of Lasall College, Clinch Valley College and received her master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. She was a member of the WCEA, VEA, NEA and the Retired Teachers of Wise County. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Norton. Her husband, Charles "Tubby" Short, her brothers, Mickey Caruso, Frank Caruso Jr., Joey Caruso and his wife Emma Lou, and one sister, Delores Caruso, preceded Mrs. Short in death. She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Short of Chester, Va.; brother and sister- in-law, J.T. and Barbara Caruso of Norton; her aunt, Edith "Lily" Gabriele of Norton, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Virginia Avenue, in Norton, where a prayer service will be conducted 7:30 that evening. Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church, with Father Tim Drake officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery. (Mildred) McCready Steffey, age 68, went to be with her savior on May 15, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Edward Woodward Jr. MEADOWVIEW – Mr. Edward C. Woodward Jr., age 65, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 15, 2004, at his home. He was born in Welch, W.Va., to the late Edward C. and Hettie Stallard Woodward Sr. He was an electrician supervisor at E. Dillon and Company, having worked 26 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Edward was a member and Sunday School teacher at the Wesley Chapel Church on the North Fork River, near Abingdon. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Vivian Mae. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ada Terry Woodward; one daughter, Dana Smythe and husband Mike of Meadowview; two sons, John Woodward and wife Pam of Meadowview and Randy Woodward and wife Michelle of Saltville; four grandsons, Jacob, Benjamin, Alex and Curtis Woodward; three granddaughters, Megan, Polly and Grace Woodward; three brothers, Darell Woodward and wife Sue of Abingdon, Mack Woodward and wife Eva of Stafford, Va., and Rusty Woodward and wife Betty of Houston, Ohio, and five sisters, Patricia Cox of Dayton Ohio, Barbara Pierce and husband Bill of Roanoke, Meryl Curd and husband Morris of Meadowview, Betty Nichols and husband Kenneth of Charlotte, N.C., and Sandy Swier and husband Buck of Piqua, Ohio.
