"He was a wonderful father and leaves behind a large family who will miss him very much." John was born in Mountain City, Tenn., Jan. 25, 1917, to Dewey Gourld and Effie Mae Reese Dunn. She had formerly worked at Universal Joint until its closure and was also a housewife. Ms. Kendrick was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of James Conley Kendrick and was preceded in death by her brothers, Siota Page Jr. and Thomas Page, and a sister, Lula Page. Survivors include loving brother, Miles D. Page of Bristol Tennessee; loving sisters, Emma Wampler of Gate City and Vada Tomlinson of Kingsport, and several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mary Ledwell COEBURN – Mary Evelyn Kelsey Ledwell, 82, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 21, 2004, at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, Norton. Born July 6, 1921, Mary Ledwell lived the majority of her life in the Johnson City area. Being the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by her mother and father, John G. and Betty Howell Kelsey, her brothers, Jack, Stanley (Tiny), J.C. and Hershel Kelsey, and her sister, Dorothea Hyder. She was an active member of the old Asbury Baptist Church (Skyline Heights Baptist), where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a Boy Scout leader and active in Eastern Star and Moose Lodge. She left the Johnson City area in 1990 to live with her son, Craig, in Louisiana, and remained there until illness brought her back to the mountains of Virginia. The last few years of her life were spent at the home of her son, Donald. She was the beloved mother of a daughter and four sons, Joyce Ledwell Banks of Cincinnati, Donald and Glenn Ledwell of Coeburn, Stanley Ledwell of Newburyport, Mass., and Craig Ledwell of New Iberia, La. Mrs. Ledwell is also survived by four granddaughters, five grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Fredrick Meade HONAKER – Mr. Fredrick "Elmer Lee" Meade, age 74, of the Drill section, went to be home with the Lord on Friday, May 21, 2004, in a Lebanon hospital. Born June 3, 1929, in Drill, Va., he was a son of the late William and Lettie Mae Sykes Meade. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the House of Prayer at Council, Va. He was a loving husband and dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Flossie Mae Dotson Meade, one infant daughter, Doris Gay Meade, one brother, R.J. Meade, and one sister, Frances "Tootsie" Lester. John Pollard Shortt VANSANT, Va. – John Pollard Shortt, 66 years of age, passed away Friday, May 21, 2004, at his home, following an extended illness, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Fred and Gaynell Scott Shortt. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1957, attended Clinch Valley College and Roanoke Business College. He was a lifetime member of the Vansant Presbyterian Church, where he had served as Sunday School treasurer. He was co-owner and manager of Shortt and Son Paving Company. He was a former manager of Pet Milk Company, he previously served as acting postmaster for the Vansant Post Office, was a former partner in the S&S Paving Company and a former employee of Mingo Lime and Lumber Company in Grundy. John loved his family and friends and enjoyed hunting, fishing and preparing special meals for his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. John is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ann Carolyn Nichols Shortt of Vansant; one son, John Pollard Shortt II and his wife Deanna of Vansant; two sisters, Virginia Shortt of Vansant and Mary Ruth Spencer and her husband Rex of Vansant; one brother, David W. Shortt and his wife Nancy of Vansant; one grandson, Jordan Ramey, and one granddaughter, Emilee Brooke Shortt. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Ruth Nichols of Mavisdale, Va., and his beloved nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Alva Shortt and Robert J. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church for 34 years, a loving mother and a homemaker. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Smith, Aug. 2, 1961. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ida Kinsley Burke and Emmett Fuller Burke, and a son, Mark Widener, sisters, Pauline Greer and Laura Trimyer, and a brother, Charles Edward "Bud" Burke. Wright NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – Dorothy Virginia Wright, age 79, of the Mudfork area, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Born Nov. 14, 1924, in St. Paul, Va., she was a daughter of the late Samuel Dale Sr. and Martha Bradley Dale Patton. She was a member of the Stoney Ridge Assembly of God. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Leonard Wright, infant daughter, Annie Louise Wright, two brothers, Walter and Eugene Dale, daughter in law, Debbie Wright, two half brothers, Fred Patton and Tommy Patton, and one stepsister, Geneva Keene. Survivors include three daughters, Linda Turner and husband Clyde of the Mudfork area of North Tazewell, Ruby Blevins and her husband, Ronnie and Juanita Rutherford, all of Marion; one son, Dean Wright of Hiddenite, N.C.; two sisters, Juanita Johnson of Mount Airy, N.C., and Reva Perry of Geneva, Ohio; four brothers, Willard Dale of Jefferson, Ohio, Sam Dale Jr. of Eustis, Fla., Crockett Dale of Deland, Fla., and Ronnie Dale of Ashtabula, Ohio; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a very special nurse, Tammy Gross.
