"Ike" Anderson KINGSPORT – William H. "Ike" Anderson, 87, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Anderson was born in Hancock County, Tenn., (Kyles Ford), and moved to Kingsport in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he earned six Bronze Stars. Ike was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3382. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, with over 30 years of service. Mr. Anderson was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church. Special thanks to his caregivers, Susan, Norma, Connie, Margie, Tami, Valerie, Sheila, Melissa and Ethel. He was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, during the Korean War. He was retired from a 30-year career in institutional food sales and was co-owner of Fish Tales Restaurant in Johnson City. Mr. Countiss was an active member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, King Masonic Lodge 461 and the Jericho Shrine Temple. Mr. Hay was a former member of Haysi Lions Club, a life member of Haysi Kiwanis Club and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. He was a retired coal miner, a former deputy sheriff of Dickenson County and a former truant officer for the Dickenson County School System. He was the last member of his generation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Fletcher and Patsy, and a son, Sylvan Hay. Meadows NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – John Thomas Brentley Meadows, age 16, of 176 Lockhart Road, was dead on arrival at a Tazewell hospital Saturday, May 22, 2004, from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident at Cliffield, Va. He was born in Abingdon and was a son of Jamie Mash Meadows Hess of North Tazewell and Thomas Meadows of State Farm, Va. He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and attended the Raven Assembly of God. He was a sophomore at Richlands High School, where he was a member of the J.V. baseball team, the RHS golf team and a Junior Gold member in bowling. Brentley was a loving and caring son, brother and grandson. He was a friend to many and will always be remembered. He was preceded in death by an aunt, Mrs. Sue Fredrick, an uncle, Michael McVey, and maternal grandfather, Mr. Buford Mash. Phillips BRISTOL, Tenn. – Donald H. Phillips went to be with the Lord on May 23, 2004. He was born in Independence, Mo., in 1925, to Granville J. and Marie Phillips. After a tour of duty with the Navy during World War II serving aboard the aircraft carrier "Bunker Hill", which was bombed and sunk by Kamakazi fighters, Don was cited by the Navy for saving 10 men aboard the carrier. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated in 1951, with a degree in industrial engineering and management. He later furthered his education by earning a masters degree in government contract acquisition management for the Florida Institute of Management. He had been heavily involved with the Boy Scouts and, two of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He had been the past president of SAC-FOX Indian POW- WOW Council and had worked for many years with the Bix Biederbecke Dixie Land Jazz Festival in Davenport, Iowa, before moving to Bristol. In 1995, Don received his Master Gardener certification from the Tennessee Agricultural Department, celebrating a lifelong love of gardening. Don worked in the private sector from 1951-1963, serving the Construction and Aerospace-Missile Industries as contract manager and plant manager, ranging from Walter Kidde, N.J., Wright Aeronautical, N.J., McDonnell Aircraft, St. Louis, Mo., and Raytheon, here in Bristol. In 1963, he joined the U.S. Army Weapons Command at the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Ill., as procurement specialist. During his years with the Command, he dealt in the major item weapon procurement field, such as aircraft weapons, self-propelled artillery, mortars and recoiless rifles. In 1984, he became chief of procurement for the Rock Island District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1992. He received his lifetime certificate as "Professional Contract Manager" from the National Contract Manager Association and was a registered certified professional contract manager. He was also a life member of the National Rifle Association and was, for many years, a well- known collector of Civil War memorabilia. He was a charter member of the Rock Island Arsenal Historical Society. He was a member of King Lodge 0461 Bristol, Scottish Rites Bodies, Valley of Moline, Ill., former member of the Shrine Temple of Medinah, Chicago, transferring to Jerricho Temple, A.A.O.M.S. of Kingsport, the Order of the Eastern Star, Border City, Chapter No. 162, Bristol Tennessee, and a former member of Bristol Kiwanis Club. He was an active member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a member of the VFW Moline. Mr. Phillips was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Moline and attended the Central Presbyterian Church of Bristol. He leaves his widow, Sallie; two sons, Richard and Mark; three stepchildren, John Gardner of Bristol, Michelle M. Dickens of Portland, Tenn., and Linda Hanson of Naples, Fla.; one grandson, Sidney Hanson; one step- granddaughter, Stacy Dickens; two half-brothers, G.J.
