Ayres, Jr., father of Ann Ayres Christ of Bristol, died May 24, 2004, in Nashville, Tenn., at the age of 85, after a long illness. Descended from the founders of the City of Memphis, Ayres was born on Sept. 8, 1918. With an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Ayres was an avid reader, particularly of history. He had an extensive library and loved sharing his books and knowledge. A career with the railroad, along with a love of history, was the foundation for his many travels. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Thompson Ayres; daughters, Beth Campbell of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Ann Christ of Bristol Tennessee, and Willie E Ayres III of Memphis; eight grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church of Memphis. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jennings Banner; two daughters, Mary Ruth Tardy and Jenneth Dickenson; one son, Stanley Lewis Banner; one grandson, Tom Banner; and one grandson-in-law, Denny Salyer. Miss Bonham was a retired employee of Sprint and the former United Inter-Mountain Telephone Company. She was a lifelong member of State Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Douglas Senior Center’s "Senior Show Choir". In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William C. "Bill" Bonham, and a nephew, David Bonham.
