Kermit Finis Farmer VANSANT, Va. – Mr. Kermit Finis Farmer, age 81, of the Fletcher’s Ridge section, went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2004. Born on Aug. 22, 1922, in Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of the late Emmit and Virgie O’Quinn Farmer of Duty, Va. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Fletcher’s Ridge Freewill Baptist Church. He was a decorated World War II veteran, having belonged to the 18th Infantry Company C, fighting in the European Theater of Operations. He received various medals including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local 1256. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was born in Ashe County, N.C., and had lived most of his life in Washington County, Va. He was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and preceded in death by a son, Jerry Friesland. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gladys A. Friesland; two granddaughters, Beth Newman and husband Andrew of South Lake, Texas, and Traci Durham and husband William of Jacksonville, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Patrick, Alex, Michael and Katie Newman, and a sister, Ella Mae Stanfield of Colonial Beach, Va. A former resident of Greensboro, N.C., he had made his home in Norton. He was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Hurd Sr., and grandmothers, Letha Hurd and Margaret Smith. Carl Lester Jarnagin BLUFF CITY – Mr. Carl Lester Jarnagin, age 85, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, following an extended illness. Mr. Jarnagin was a native of Roane County, Tenn., and a son of the late Charlie and Dicie Reneau Jarnagin. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as a radioman on a destroyer mine sweeper during the North African invasion. He was retired from the Civil Service with the U.S. Air Force at Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Va. Mr. Jarnagin was a honorary lifetime member of the Bluff City Rescue Squad. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. Survivors include his wife of 67 years and seven months, Faye B. Jarnagin of the home; three daughters, Abby Darleen Raines and husband Bill of Lincoln, Mont., Patricia Gail McLean of Baton Rouge, La., and Angie J. Dunn and husband Rev. James Dunn of Patrick County, Va.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Bobby Jarnagin of Harriman, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews also survive. He was retired electrician and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. (E.C.) and Kate Owens of Fredericksburg, Va.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Kathryn C. and Larry Norman of Azal, Texas; a step-granddaughter, Kathryn C.
