She was born June 30, 1936, in Russell County, Va., a daughter of the late Hayter and Daisy Chaffin Skeen. She had lived in Bristol since 1953 and was a member of Bethel View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Skeen, Bernard Skeen and Curtis Skeen, and a daughter-in-law, Chloe Goad Addison, who passed away Sept. 23, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ballard M. "Horse" Addison; one son, D. Phil Addison of Bluff City; two grandchildren, Brooke Addison and Chase Addison, both of Bluff City; four sisters, Katherine Malone of Kingsport, Anna Patrick of Bristol Virginia, Elsie Jessee of Castlewood and Dessie Campbell of Ridgeway, Va.; a brother, Glenn Skeen of Kingsport, and several nieces and nephews. Born May 8, 1934, in Buchanan County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Rosa Tiller Lester. She had spent her early life in this area and moved back here in 1975. She attended the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Berk S. Artrip Sr., her second husband, Ralph Fitzgerald, one sister, Martha Lester Farmer, two brothers, James Lester and Clyde Lester, and one grandson, Shawn Ray. Gentry SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. – Richard Loran Gentry, age 82, formerly of Saltville, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Robinson’s Adult Home. He was retired as a plant manger for B.F. Goodrich. Mr. Gentry was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of the William King Masonic Lodge 227 in Saltville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha F. Gentry. Mutter ROANOKE – Mr. Vance Franklin Mutter, age 61, boarded a steam engine train bound for Heaven on June 1, 2004. When Vance steps off the train, he will be greeted by his loved ones who went before him: his mother, Regina F. Blevins, his father, John H. Mutter, his brother, Alvin L. Blevins, and two nephews, Timothy Mutter and Jamie Jackson. Vance was born on Dec. 1, 1942, in Washington County, Va. He was a longtime native of Piqua, Ohio. He worked for Miami River Stone Company for over 23 years. He was a member of the Ohio State Model Train Association, located in Sidney, Ohio. He leaves behind his love for trains and a family who will miss him deeply. Survivors: his stepfather, Everette L. Quillen JOHNSON CITY – Stephanie Irene Muth Quillin, R.N., Ph.D., age 63, 5 Horseshoe Bend, died Monday, June 1, 2004, at her residence from the complications of lymphoma. Born in Takoma Park, Md., she was the daughter of Frank J. Muth, Bethesda, Md., and the late Helen Irene Early Muth. She served as a U.S. Navy nurse at St. Albans Hospital, Queens, N.Y., during the Vietnam era. Dr. Quillin was a registered nurse for over 41 years and taught nursing at five universities for a total of over 24 years; the last 12 years she was an associate professor at the College of Nursing, East Tennessee State University. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing, the American Nursing Association and numerous other international, national and state nursing organizations. Her published nursing research centered around understanding the bonding process between mothers and their babies. Dr. Quillin was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Johnson City, where she sang in the choir. She was a wonderful mother and wife and an avid hiker and lover of nature. Survivors include her husband, Jim Quillin of the home; a daughter, Katie Quillin of the home; a sister, Joey Vance of Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Eric Muth of New Hope, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Quillin Nelms of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Delaphine Thompson ABINGDON – Mrs. Delaphine Francisco Thompson, age 94, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Thompson was born on Dec. 18, 1909, in Washington County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Herbert Francisco and Nannie Dunn Francisco. She was also preceded in death by her husband, L. Frank Thompson, and her brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving member of her and her siblings’ family. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Wesley Chapel Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Joann Thompson of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Kevin Thompson and wife Jennifer of Abingdon and Kimberly Tucker and husband Kent of Speedwell, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Lexie and McKenzie Thompson and Katie, Courtney and Jarod Tucker; two sisters- in-law, Beulah Stringer of Abingdon and Eula Francisco of Glade Spring. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Clifton Duncan officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Casket bearers will be Kevin Thompson, Kent Tucker, Herbert Davenport, Claude Counts Jr., Gene Davenport and Junior Twead.
