Charles Thomas Combs, 43, Sugar Grove, Va. Richard L. Eggers, 91, Abingdon Roberts H. Harrington Jr., 80, Marion Jeanette Hess, 81, Richlands Joseph W. Landes, 66, Blountville Margaret Phillippi Phipps, 84, Bristol Tennessee Nancy Jean Pruitt, 51, Bristol Tennessee Nathan Campbell Thomas, infant, Castlewood Joe Anderson GATE CITY – Joe Douglas J.D. Anderson, 59, passed away at home of an apparent heart attack June 9, 2004. J.D., as he was also known, was a graduate of Douglas High School, Kingsport. Joe was a loving, kind-hearted person to all who knew him. Joe retired from Tennessee Eastman Company, after working there over 30 years. He was presently employed by Gate City Funeral Home. Joe Douglas Anderson joined the Scott County Lifesaving and First Aid Crew Inc. on March 4, 1975. During his years with the crew, Joe had held various officer positions and was currently captain. Joe was a member of both the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads and the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads. Joe served the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads as District 9 vice president from October 1999 through July 2001. He was made a life member of Scott County Lifesaving and First Aid Crew Inc. in 1995, and a life member of Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, District 9, in 2003. Joe D. Anderson was enlisted into the Virginia Army National Guard on March 15, 1972, and was honorably discharged on April 20, 1991. He retired at the rank of sergeant first class and served as tactical communications chief for the HHD 1030th Engineer Battalion. As communications chief, he was responsible for installing and maintaining all wire and signal communication equipment. He became the go-to man because of his vast knowledge of military communication equipment and procedures. Joe also was the first African-American to enlist and retire from the 1030th Engineer Battalion. Not only was Joe one of the finest senior enlisted soldiers the Guard has had to date, he was also a mentor and friend to all who came in contact with him. Several soldiers that are still in the Virginia Army National Guard accredit their career to Joe. Joe led his troops with a laugh and a smile. He never asked his troops to do anything that he would not do first. If asked, anyone that worked for Joe, not only admired him, but respected him immensely. Joe continuously gave of his time, not only to the Guard, but to the rescue squad, and sometimes, at the same time. When the Guard had to train with weapons, Joe would drive the rescue squads to the training and was always prepared to assist in case of an emergency. No matter what was asked of Joe, when it came to his military duties, there was nothing he would not do to get the job done. Joe will be remembered for his unmistakable laugh and the joy that he brought each soldier that served with him. He will be sorely missed.
