Family and friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Joe Douglas J.D. Anderson, 59, passed away at home of an apparent heart attack June 9, 2004. Ettie M. Baldwin MARION – Rev. Ettie Magalene Baldwin, age 73, passed away Friday, June 11, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She was born in Marion to the late Elder Charles Lee and Florence Parks Baldwin, and was preceded in death by a brother, James Baldwin, and a sister, Grace LaNell Arnold. She was a licensed minister in the Church of God and was a member of the Abundant Life Church of God in Marion. Ms. Baldwin was the registrar in Smyth County for over 27 years. Survivors include three brothers, Rev. Leroy Baldwin, Greer, S.C., Rev. Eugene Baldwin, Marion, and K.C. Baldwin, Marion; two sisters, Leona Russell, Marion, and Ruth Brooks, Marion, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 13, 2004, at 8 p.m. at the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, with Rev. Eugene Baldwin, Rev. Leroy Baldwin and Rev. Todd Rigley officiating. Lula Tolliver Cuddy ABINGDON – Mrs. Lula Tolliver Cuddy, age 87, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was of the Baptist faith. Lula was a member of the Women of the Moose in Abingdon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Cuddy, two sons, Ernest "Peck" Cuddy and Danny Cuddy, and a daughter, Edna Marie Cuddy. She is survived by two sons, Clifford P. Cuddy Jr. and wife Geraldine of Abingdon and Bobby Cuddy and wife Sue of Meadowview; five daughters, Ruby Watkins of Baltimore, Viola Casey and husband Jennings of Baltimore, Mary Parris and husband Luke of Abingdon, Glenda Winebarger of Abingdon and Diane Castle and husband James of Abingdon; a special niece, Liz Murray of Abingdon, who was like a daughter; several other nieces and nephews; 14 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, June 13, 2004, at 6:30 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Wesley Price officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. David A. Edmonds Sr. AUSTINVILLE, Va. – David Arthur Edmonds Sr., age 87, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the New River Valley Medical Center. He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Delton, Va., son of the late John Lee and Sarah Jane Primm Edmonds. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Mae Pauley Edmonds, three sisters and two brothers. He was a retired self-employed truck driver and attended Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia E. and Elwood Akers of Austinville and Carolyn E. and Doug Robinson of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, David Arthur Jr. and Janie Edmonds of St. Paul, Va.; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Bradbery, Pat Pattertson, Angela Eversole, Beverly Thompson, Greg Patterson, Krista Patterson, David Edmonds III and Shannon Jessee; eight great-grandchildren, Sydney, Grace, Emaleigh, Landon, Lincoln, Kaden, Abagail and Madison; a special friend, Helen Cummings of Sylvatus, and several nieces and nephews also survive. Eggers, age 91, a well-known resident of Jerry Lane, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Zionsville, N.C., a son of the late William Claude Eggers and the late Emma Miller Eggers. He and his family moved to Virginia in December 1923. He attended elementary schools in Mabel, N.C., and Lodi and Meadowview. He attended Greenfield High School and was a graduate of Rich Valley High School. He was a former truck driver, a licensed insurance adjuster, and for many years was the owner of Eggers Insurance Agency in Abingdon. He was a salesman for Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon for many years and was a retired farmer. He was the last male charter member of the Abingdon Bible Church, where he had served as an elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent. He had attended Greendale Chapel for the past several years. He loved baseball, was a member of the Greenfield High School baseball team during high school and later served as a coach for the Moose Team of the Babe Ruth League and helped lead the team to a state championship. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, McCabe Lodge 56 for over 50 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Japan. He had a great love for the Lord, reading, music and traveling. He and his family sang in a gospel quartet for several years and had a Sunday morning program on WOPI radio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James G. Eggers and R. Glenn Eggers, three sisters, Pearl Eggers Jones, Bonnie Whiteaker Nash and Edith Compton, and a granddaughter, Kim Lotts Campbell. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dora Mae Jones Eggers; one daughter, Phyllis Eggers Lotts and husband K.W. (Wick) Lotts of Abingdon; two sons, Richard Larry Eggers and wife Jo of Buchanan, Va., and the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers and wife Dorinda of Abingdon; grandchildren, Laura Beth Greer of Abingdon and Robbie Schlosser and wife Sandra of Roanoke; three great-grandchildren, Josh Campbell of Lexington, Va., and Aaron Greer and Sarah Greer, both of Abingdon; one sister, Mary Lois (Tooty) Rutledge of Abingdon; three brothers-in-law, Charles Jones of Abingdon, Calvin Jones and wife Kathy of Abingdon and Erwin Compton of Kingsport; one sister-in-law, Myrtle A. Jones of Abingdon, and several nieces and nephews, including Charles F. Whiteaker, to whom he served as a father figure. He is also survived by a host of friends. Funeral services for Richard L. Eggers will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Greendale Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers, the Rev. Paul Bufford and the Rev. Paul Ketron officiating. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lewis Hess Sr., one son, Bobby J. Hess, three brothers, Sherman Simmons, Luther Simmons and John Simmons Jr., and three sisters, Lilly Shelton, Bertie Christian and Lula Elswick. She is survived by three daughters, Janice Watson Tester of Richlands, Judy Pruitt and husband Wayne of Paint Lick and Drema Patton and husband Charles of Richlands; one son, Charles Lewis Hess Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Herman Simmons of Belfast; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. Phipps BRISTOL, Tenn. – Margaret Phillippi Phipps, 84, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Groseclose, Va., a daughter of the late Ira Jasper and Nettie Newland Grubb Phillippi, and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, was retired from Morrison Molded Fiberglass and was the widow of Howard A. "Bud" Phipps. Survivors include a son, Michael H. Phipps and his wife Pat G. of Bristol Tennessee; a daughter, Toni Phipps Pittman and her husband Robert of Cordova, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Maggie P. Vance and Sophie G. Phipps, both of Bristol Tennessee, and Alison P. Rose of Sardis, Miss.; two grandsons, Christopher M. Phipps of Bristol Tennessee and Richard Alan Pittman of Collierville, Tenn.; four great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; two sisters, Sharon Phillippi and Virginia Trammell, both of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, Dr. Paul Phillippi of Cary, N.C., and several nieces and nephews. At Mrs. Phipps’ request, her body will be cremated, with no visitation at the funeral home. A worship service in celebration of the resurrected life of Mrs. Phipps will be conducted at 6 o’clock Saturday evening, June 12, 2004, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Rev. A native of Wilmington, Del., she was born Jan. 31, 1956, to the late John Ross and Opal Owens Hague. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Hague, and sister, Mary Alice Hague. She was a recent graduate of Northeast State Community College. Betty had a passion for art, deep love for children and loved the outdoors. Betty is survived by two sons, William Ross "Billy" Short and Michael Thomas "Tommy" Short, both of the home; two brothers, Albert Hague, Mountain City, and John Hague, Le Mesa, N.M., and several aunts, uncles, cousins and loyal friends also survive.
