Ralph Ellis BLOUNTVILLE – Ralph Ellis, age 75, went home to be with his Lord Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Hospice House, after a period of declining health. Ralph was born in Cameron, Mo., Dec. 25, 1928, and he was a son of the late Ralph Thomas and Louise Sara (Raymond) Ellis. Ralph was a member of the Indian Springs Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of the Lebanon Dry Cleaners. He served with the U.S. Air Force as a staff Sergeant from 1955-1959. He served in Korea and received the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal, along with many other awards. He was an electrical engineer, performed testing on nuclear bombs and established testing methods on nuclear missiles, while he was employed with McDonnel Douglas. He served as a team manager on the manned Gemini and Skylab space craft. He was a member of the Jaycees and was Jaycee of the Year 1960 in St. Louis, Mo. He was retired from Raytheon, where he worked with the MU2 Missile. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Agnes (Collier) Ellis of the home; his daughters, Vickie Ellis Brueggeman and husband Steve of O’ftan, Mo., and Connie Ellis Ledbetter and husband Gary of Columbia, Mo.; his son, Ralph R. Ellis Jr. of Cameron; his brother, Clinton Earl Ellis; two stepchildren, Rhonda Guffey and husband Gerald and Robin H. Conrad and husband James of Lugoff, S.C.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Walton and husband Curtis and Kory, Kyle and Katy Ledbetter; two step-grandchildren, Sarah and Christopher Guffey, and close friends and companion, Joann Riley and Raggs. Ferguson MEADOWVIEW – Mr. William Ray Ferguson, age 79, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a retired employee of W & L Construction Company and a retired farmer. Mr. Ferguson had lived most of his life in the Cedar Creek area of Washington County. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Lexington and received the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and eight Stars, as well as the Phillipine Liberation Medal. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Mae Minton Ferguson, a sister, Dorothy Ross, four brothers, Delton, Pete, Winfred and Buddy, and a grandson, David Bellamy. Frankie Sue Harvey JOHNSON CITY – Frankie Sue Harvey, 72, of 2501 E. Oakland Ave., died Tuesday, June 16, 2004, at her residence, following an illness. A native of Bristol Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Gertrude Booth Harper, who, having moved to Georgia for several years, returned to Bristol and later moved to Johnson City in 1950. She was a retired medical technician from the Bristol Memorial Hospital for 35 years. A member of the Watagua Christian Church, she had attended the Grace Fellowship for the last two years. Mrs. Harvey was the widow of Dexter King Harvey since 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Karen Harvey; and a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Clarence Parker, all of Johnson City, and three sisters, Mildred Dowell, Roanoke, Peggy Jo and Billy Denton, Bristol Virginia, and Nema and Richard Schaffer of Blountville. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a retired coal miner, having been employed by Pittston Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA and the Honaker Men’s Club. Shepherd GRUNDY – Jimmy Carper Shepherd, 77 years of age, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, following an extended illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was a son of the late Ken "KC" and Sadie Moore Shepherd. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for more than 50 years and a member of Looney’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Area Medal and the World War Victory Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 164, a retired coal miner and painter. Jim was an avid fisherman, hunter and a remarkable checker player. Above all, he was a great father and grandfather. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his wife, June Davis Shepherd, April 30, 1998. He was also preceded in death by one son, Daniel Rae Shepherd, three sisters, Mary Shepherd, Mildred Snidow and Nancy Tickle, and three brothers, Estel Ira, Leades and Marion Shepherd. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements. Benjamin C. Sturgill Benjamin C. Sturgill, M.D., died at his home on June 13, 2004, from complications of heart disease and myeloma. He was born in Wise County, Va., to Kathleen Cole Sturgill, who survives him, and the late Joseph M. Sturgill. Dr. Sturgill is also survived by his wife, Eleanore; children, Rebecca Sturgill, son-in-law, William Abrams, and their children, Caitlin and Dylan Abrams of Farmville, Va.; and his son, Benjamin C. Sturgill II, his wife Annette, and their daughter, Isabella of Portland, Ore.; brothers include Archie G. of St. Petersburg, Fla., William I of Johnson City and Ronald B. of Burlington, N.C. He was educated at Berea College, Berea, Ky., and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He interned at New York Hospital, spent two years at the National Institutes of Health and then returned to Charlottesville to join the School of Medicine faculty in the Department of Pathology. In 1991, he became the associate dean and chair of the Committee on Admissions at the School of Medicine, a position he held until his retirement in June 2003. His primary field of interest centered on renal disease. During his tenure at UVa, he chaired a number of committees, including the Human Investigation Committee and the Council on Medical Education. In May 2003, he received the Walter Reed Distinguished Achievement Award from the Medical Alumni Association. Also in 2003, the Department of Pathology established the Benjamin C. Sturgill Lectureship in Renal Disease, which each year will bring a renowned expert in the field to lecture at the University. Ben’s participation in musical activities was one of the great joys of his life. He was a founding member of the Youth Orchestra and The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville Albemarle, and Zephyrus. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Earsey Louis and Lucy Mae Collins Trinkle. He graduated Bristol Tennessee High School, attended Virginia Highlands Community College and Texas School of Communications. He served in the U.S. Army, was employed at Sprint United Telephone Company for 43 years and was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church, where he formerly taught Sunday School for many years. He was a member of Communication Workers of America, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, York Rite, 32 Scottish Rite Mason, Early V-8 Car Club, Smoky Mountain Car Club and the Early V-8 Cars of America. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Wayne "Jim" Trinkle. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Carmody Trinkle.
