Jack Campbell Widner, 53, Chilhowie Marjorie Hall Atkins ATKINS, Va. – Marjorie Hall Atkins, age 74, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Born March 22, 1930, to the late Margie Goins and Robert L. Hall, she was an active member and teacher at Davis Memorial United Methodist Church. She worked for many years and retired as an administrative assistant in the Smyth County Clerk’s Office. She is survived by her husband, John E. Atkins of Atkins; one daughter and son- in-law, Sherry and Buster Russell of Atkins; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Rennie Atkins of Abingdon and Ben and Judy Atkins of Atkins; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruth Dishner of Marion and Frances and Jack Hudson of Glen Burnie, Md.; one brother and sister-in-law, Charlie Bill and Mickey Hall of Florida; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 19, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Davis Memorial United Methodist Church, Atkins, with Rev. Donna Hester and Rev. Frank Bauman officiating. Basham GRAY, Tenn. – Juanita Freeman Basham, 66, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Basham was a former resident of Gatchel, Ind. She was born in McDowell County, W.Va., a daughter of William Harvey and Ida Mae Whitt Freeman. She traveled throughout the country for 22 years with her husband, who was in the military. She was a member of the Washington Regular Primitive Baptist District Association for over 50 years and was a current member of the Hope Regular Primitive Baptist Church of Gray. She was preceded in death by her father, her husband, Garman Ray Basham, and a daughter, Sandy Basham. Survivors include her mother, Ida Mae Freeman of Gray; her son, Garman Ray Basham Jr. and his wife Tammy of Gray; a granddaughter, Brandi Wheatley; two grandsons, Joseph and Thomas Basham; three sisters, Donna Freeman and Linda Brooks, both of Gray, and Beatrice Bledsoe and her husband Greg of Kingsport; a brother, Granville Freeman and his wife Connie of Vansant, Va.; a host of friends and brothers and sisters in the Lord. Edward G. Beattie BRISTOL, Va. – Edward G. Beattie, age 86, died May 5, 2004, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was born on Dec. 9, 1917, in Far Hills, N.J., son of the late Edmond Estep and Mary Margaret (Kilgallen) Beattie. On Sept. 24, 1936, he married Alicia Chappelle in Bedford, Va. She predeceased him in 1990. His career with the Norfolk and Western and the Norfolk and Southern Railroads spanned over three decades. He retired as general foreman of mechanical affairs, Bristol division. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Council 562 in Roanoke. He loved gardening, music, crossroad puzzles and writing contest slogans. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Beattie, and his sister, Margaraet Kenny. "Dick" and Dorothy Breedlove, she had lived most of her life in Bristol Virginia. She worked many years for Campbell Enterprises, and later worked at Virginia Intermont College, until she became disabled in 1993. Elaine was preceded in death by her father, Dick Breedlove, grandparents, Bolling and Dessie Breedlove and Pearl and Claude Harrison. Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Breedlove; son, Donald W. Mrs. Laughlin retired after 38 years of service with Bell South Telephone Co. Her great loves were her Tennessee mountains and her two loving daughters. She was also an avid reader. James Sylvester Mabe RICHLANDS – Mr. James Sylvester Mabe, age 75, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, June 17, 2004, at a Richlands hospital, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was a son of the late James Franklin and Maude Ellen Keen Mabe, both Tazewell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area, was a former employee of M.O. Warner and a retired tipple operator with Permac Coal Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the occupation of Germany after World War II and responded to the Korean War in the early 1950s. Mr. Mabe attended Trinity Assembly of God at Cedar Bluff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Lee Mabe, sister, Opal Cook, and an infant sister, Paulene. Survivors are his devoted wife of 56 years, Mrs. Dortha Wingo Mabe; one daughter, Patricia Fay Lockhart and husband Billy of Yorktown, Va.; two sons, Mr. Phil S. Mabe of Richlands and Mr. Ronnie W. Born May 18, 1939, in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Rosa Dillow Terry. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Lick Creek First Church of God. She was a retired licensed practical nurse, having worked at Grundy Hospital for 32 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby L. Terry Sr. Survivors include her husband, Don Shortridge of Rowe; two sons, Tommy Shortridge and his wife Dwana of Pilgrims Knob, Va., and Terry Shortridge of Chester, Va; one daughter, Tammy Campbell of Rowe; two grandsons, Christopher Simmons and Joshua Campbell; three granddaughters, Chelsea Shortridge, Cortney Shortridge and Linsey Shortridge; many nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends also survive.
