Robert Henry (Bob) Berger, 70, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at his home. Combs Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. Berger. Kenneth Bondurant Kenneth Kessler (Ken) Bondurant, 54, died Friday, June 18, 2004, following an intensive, nine-month battle with cancer. Ken was born June 28, 1949, in Radford. He was a graduate of Radford High School and Emory & Henry College and did graduate work at Virginia Tech. Following a short career as a juvenile probation officer in Delaware, he joined Bondurant Realty Corporation in 1972, in the residential sales department. He quickly developed a specialization in the adaptive reuse of older buildings. His projects included the remodeling of the old Grove Avenue Methodist Church Building into apartments and offices and Radford’s old Leggett Building into the Norwood Center (now RU’s Bondurant Center for the Arts). College Park Townhomes and Cedar Ridge Condos and Townhomes also were his projects. He remodeled several houses and built new apartments for Radford University student housing, including University Square. In 1984, he became president of Bondurant Realty Corporation and served in that capacity until his death. Ken was active in a variety of organizations. As a youth, he became an Eagle Scout. He played saxophone in a number of area combos, including the Trutones, The Flames and Don and the Deltones. As an adult, he served as president of the Radford Chamber of Commerce, president of the New River Valley Association of Realtors, was as an active member of Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the RU Foundation Board, and as a member of the Emory & Henry College Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee. Ken also served as the founding chair of the RU Art Society and nobly led their efforts toward the support and promotion of the cultural arts from 1990 until the present. He is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Carolee Jackson Bondurant; three sons, Kenneth Jr., Jacob and Benjamin; a daughter, Kathryn; his parents, Hix and Lillian Bondurant, all of Radford; two brothers and their wives, Bill and Becca Bondurant of Radford and David and Alison Bondurant of Baton Rouge, La.; a sister and her husband, Nancy Bondurant and Richard Couch of Oneonta, N.Y.; as well as a host of friends and relatives. Ken and Carolee’s hobby was boating. Last spring they started their America’s Great Loop Cruise on their "October Moon," traveling north from Norfolk, along the east coast, up the Hudson River, north to Montreal, then along the Great Lakes to Chicago and finally St. Louis, Mo., (a total of 2900 miles), where they left their boat in a marina in July. They had planned to return for the southern half of their cruise in October, but when Ken became ill, they were unable to continue their journey. A service celebrating Ken’s life will be held at Grove United Methodist Church, Tuesday, June 22, at 11 a.m., with Rev. James Bennington and Dr. Russell Gregory officiating. Owens Funeral Service, Lebanon, is in charge of arrangements. Virginia Dotson WISE – Virginia "Tiny" Dotson, 92, passed away Friday, June 18, 2004, at the Norton Community Hospital, Norton. She was a resident of Wise since 1917, she lived on Main Street of Wise for 64 years, attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol Virginia, was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Wise, the kindergarten teacher at the Trinity United Methodist Church for several years, received an award for several years of dedicated volunteer work at the Va.-Ky. District Fair and was active in the Wise Senior Citizens and Wise Study Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph N. Dotson, twin sister, Sara Greever, and sister, Pauline Drachuck. Surviving are three daughters, Virginia Hill of Wise and twins, Sara Vasvary of Wise and Martha Armstrong of Newport News, Va.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one sister, Lelia Riddle of Bean Station, Tenn. Terry Bart Estep MARION – Terry Bart Estep, age 47, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Knoxville. He was born in Portsmouth, Va., and was preceded in death by his father, William G. Estep, and a brother, Robert Kent Estep. He was employed with the U.S. Post Office in Knoxville and had served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his mother, Carol S. Kennedy ABINGDON – Hester Virginia Scyphers Kennedy, age 97, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 18, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born on Aug. 13, 1906, in Washington County, Va., and was a daughter of the late John and Etta Scyphers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Roscoe Kennedy, a son, Harry W. Kennedy, two daughters, Jean Scott and Mary Ann Warren, and two grandchildren, Maxine Hill and Nelson Childress. She is survived by four daughters, Audrey Mitchell, Retha Keith and Gaye Levonda Alexander, all of Abingdon, and Louise Corbett of Monterey, Va.; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several great-great- grandchildren. King Company. She was a member of the 1931 Women’s History Club and State Street United Methodist Church, where she was active until recent years. He was a native of Clearfield, Pa., and made his home in the Washington, D.C., area for many years, before moving to Bristol in 1993. He was a son of the late Calvin and Wilma Park Shuemaker and was also preceded in death by a son, Bryan Shuemaker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from the U.S. Department of Defense. He was a member of Shady Valley Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his devoted wife, Margie Cawood Shuemaker; one stepdaughter, Mary Beth Grubb and husband Chris of Bristol Tennessee; one stepson, Craig Eatmon and wife Sally of Damascus, Md.; one brother, Donald Shuemaker of Manassas, Va.; one granddaughter; four grandsons; dear friend, Edsel Phelps of Abingdon, and very special cousin, Bonnie Powell of Clearfield. Eva Mae Peters Sorah ABINGDON – Mrs. Eva Mae Peters Sorah, age 90, passed away to be with the Lord Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Grace Healthcare Center in Abingdon. She was born on May 8, 1914, in Washington County, Va., to the late John L. Peters and Margaret Kennedy Peters. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Sorah was a retired seamstress from Harwood Manufacturing. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Quincy Sorah, a daughter, Barbara Sorah Hurley, and five sisters, Grace Mitchell, Virginia Andrews, Hazel Broome, Edith Heniger and Lexie Barker. Sykes ABINGDON – Mr. Ollie Winston Sykes, age 63, went to be with the Lord on June 17, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after a brief illness with his family by his side. He was a son of the late Leon and Lona Sykes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Buckles, and his brothers, Robert, Carlton, Fred, Harold and Jack. Ollie was an accredited bluegrass musician. In the early 1960s, along with his brother Jack, they formed the bluegrass band the Sykes Brothers and the Bluegrass Drifters. They traveled the country and played numerous events. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Taylor Sykes; two sons, Eddie Sykes and wife Peggy of Meadowview and Tim Sykes and wife Tammy of Abingdon; granddaughters, who were their Papaw’s pride and joy, Katie Sykes, Kelly Sykes, Brittney Sykes and Kirsten Sykes; his loving companion, his dog, Rocky; his sisters, Virginia Matney of Lebanon, Clara Buckles of Cleveland, Ohio, Jean Keith of West Virginia and Katherine Keller of North Carolina; a very special sister, Verda Sykes of Lebanon; a brother, Jay Sykes of Lebanon; a special niece, Retha Honaker of Lebanon; as well as several other nieces and nephews. Trivett GRUNDY – Warren Harold Trivett, 80 years of age, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2004, at his home, following an extended illness. Born in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Wyley B. and Lea Mullins Trivett. He was a retired merchant and was owner of the Family Shop in Grundy. He graduated from Clintwood High School in 1942 and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a member of the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, a member of Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF&AM, a member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was stationed on the Troop Carrier "William Mitchell," member of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion, former mayor for the Town of Grundy for two terms and a former town councilman. He was a former member of the Haysi Kiwanis Club and was instrumental in the early years of the Breaks Interstate Park. He was a former member of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award of the Lonesome Pine Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a world traveler and had visited all continents, except Antarctica, and his last trip was a cruise in the Rain Forest of the Amazon River Valley. Harold was an optimist and, every chance he had, he would tell you how happy he was and what a good life he had. Mr. Trivett is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy "Dot" Arrington Trivett of Grundy; one son, Terry and his wife Teresa Trivett of Grundy, and two grandsons, Matthew and his wife Anna Trivett of Frederick, Md., and Michael Trivett of Arlington, Va. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dr. J.C. Trivett, Dr. W.B. Trivett Jr. and J.B. Trivett.
