Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main St., Abingdon, is serving the Davis family. Niles N. Gray GRAY, Tenn. – Niles N. Gray, age 89, of 109 Buckingham Road, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at his residence. He wanted to be remembered as a man who loved his family, church and community. He was born on a farm in Gray on Feb. 17, 1915, the son of the late Leona Hall Gray and James P. Gray. He attended Gray Elementary School, graduated from Boones Creek High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He worked in the hardware business for 36 years, beginning his career as a salesman at London Hardware in Johnson City. From 1946 to 1956, he was manager of W.B. Greene Company in Kingsport. At that time, he returned to London Hardware as manager and later became president. During the time he was in Kingsport, he was a charter member of the Kingsport Optimist Club, a charter member and later became a Past Grand Counselor of the United Commercial Travelers, a member of Johnson City Rotary Club and a charter member of the Gray Ruritan Club. He was a member of the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce, having served on the board of directors and was a retired director of the First Tennessee Bank and the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Gray served three years as a director of the Tennessee Retail Hardware Association and 15 years on the Washington County Election Commission. He was instrumental in locating and obtaining a plant site for the North Electric Company plant in Gray. He was an active member of the Gray United Methodist Church, where he has held many offices. He served as a trustee and member of the administrative board. Mr. Gray began his association with the Appalachian Regional Fair as a youth through the Future Farmers of America Program. He watched the fair grow from a small community fair in 1926 to the fourth largest fair in Tennessee. He was instrumental in the reorganization of the Washington County Fair in 1958, serving as treasurer for four years and later as president. On April 1, 1976, he was elected the first secretary-manager of Appalachian District Fair. The fair attained regional status in 1977. In the Tennessee Fair Association, Mr. Gray served on the board of directors, as the East Tennessee vice president and on various committees. His wife, Leola Barnes Gray, and brother, Ralph Gray, preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in law, Sandra and husband Jay Matherly of Johnson City and Martha and husband Roger Kennedy of Jonesborough; one sister, Elizabeth Mays of Richmond; two brothers, Howard Gray of Johnson City and Robert Gray and wife Bonnie of Gray; two sisters-in-law, Reba Gray of Gray and Vivian Barnes Adams and husband Roy Adams of Gray; one brother-in-law, David and Joyce Barnes of Gray, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Gray will be conducted Sunday, July 4, at 3 p.m. at Gray United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Hubble, Rev. Ramon Torres, Rev. Amy Cook and Rev. James Henry officiating. Entombment services for Mr. Gray will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Freddie Lee Greear FREDERICKSBURG – Freddie Lee Greear, 69, peacefully passed away, Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at his home. Freddie was an active member of Chancellor Baptist Church and a considerate volunteer to anyone in need. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy and had 43 combined years in service to the federal government. Freddie is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Anna; two sons, Dwight D. Greear of Dumfries and Patrick W. Greear of Fredericksburg; a sister, Betty G. Dean of Noblesville, Ind., and one granddaughter, Julie C. Greear of Dumfries. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with Rev. Eric A. Goforth and Rev. John C. Edmonds officiating. Mrs. Haga was born on March 20, 1926, in Meadowview, to the late Charles Oscar and Louella Galligher Jackson. Mrs. Haga had lived most of her life in the Bristol area, was a system analyst with the Raytheon Company and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Haga was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Haga, seven brothers and six sisters. Mrs. Haga is survived by one son, Jack Haga; one daughter, Kimberly Howington and husband Jerry; two grandchildren, Jerry Howington Jr. and Robin Howington; one sister, Mildred Francisco of Norfolk, Va.; several nieces and nephews; one special niece, Shirley Tucker; a host of many special friends and one very loving companion, Abby. Harrison BLOUNTVILLE – Bobby Franklin Harrison, age 12, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. Bobby was a three-time "Citizen of the Year" Award recipient and a principal’s honor roll student at Blountville Middle School. He was a member of the Blountville Middle School chorus and was a school office worker. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and namesake, Bob Stevens Sr., maternal great-grandmother, Blanche Neal, and paternal grandparents, Henry and Lurrie Stigall. Bobby was the son of Paul and Sonja (Stevens) Harrison and is survived by one brother, Mathew Harrison, and one sister, Annie Harrison. Maude Dolly Price COEBURN – Maude Dolly Price, 77, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at her residence. Gary Lynn Reynolds, age 58, of Eagleview Private Drive, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. Patrick Scales Patrick Scales, 53, died Sunday, June 27, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Stewart Scales, in 1968, and his mother, Nellie Scales, in 2001. He is survived by two brothers, Steve Scales of Bristol Tennessee and Tony Scales of Big Stone Gap, and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Bristol on Jan. 12, 1951. He attended Avoca Elementary School and Bluff City High School and graduated from Sullivan East High School in 1969. He attended the University of Tennessee from 1969 through 1971. For more than 20 years, he worked as an emergency room tech at Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he had many friends. At the time of his death, he was employed in the operating room at BRMC. He was proud to be a member of the Sons of the American Legion. Patrick was a gifted and beloved individual who will be greatly missed by many. All of his friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the American Legion Hackler-Wood Post 145, located at 515 Marion Ave., near the intersection of Edgemont Avenue and Marion Avenue in Bristol Tennessee. Howard H. Sword LEBANON – Howard Horton (Hort) Sword, 79, died Thursday, July 1, 2004. Born March 27, 1925, in Scott County, a son of the late Fred Sword and the late Mae Yoakey Sword, he had lived most of his life in Russell County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Methodist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Sword Jr., Joe Sword and Emory (Watt) Sword, and four sisters, Lakie Sword, Martha Herron, Edna Robinson and Nancy Lee Jennings. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Kyle Jackson, Gate City, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Robinson and Rev. Austin Fields officiating. Entombment will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004, in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum in Ketron Memorial Gardens. Bertha Lee Talley ABINGDON – We celebrate the home going of Bertha Lee Henry Kinsolving Talley, age 90, who went to be with the Lord and her heavenly family on July 2, 2004. Mrs. Talley was born on Feb. 1, 1914, in Washington County to the late William and Elizabeth Henry. After her parents’ deaths, she became the foster daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Leighton Kinsolving of Abingdon. Mrs. Talley lived in the Green Springs community most of her life, with the exception of the 26 years she lived in Tallahassee, Fla., after she and her husband, Tom Talley, retired from the dairy business. Mrs. Talley was a homemaker and a member of Green Springs Presbyterian Church, where she was pianist/organist for 34 years. In Tallahassee, she was a member of Thomasville Road Baptist Church, played piano for the senior choir and was an encourager to their Sunday School class. Her husband, Tom Talley, died in June of 1977 and she returned to Abingdon in 1995, where she was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church. Her last few years were spent at Abingdon Manor, giving joy to others and still playing piano by memory, even as recent as one week prior to being hospitalized. She was known for her music, her constant smile and sweet nature. Mrs. Talley is survived by three daughters, Donna Talley Garrett, Ann Talley Berry and Carol Talley Clifton and husband Mac R. Clifton. She is also survived by one son, Tom Talley and wife Julianne. She was the grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and counting. "Pushbutton" Wilson, age 66, of the College Ridge Mobile Estates, passed away July 2, 2004, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was the son of the late Roscoe and Ellen Clark Wilson, both Buchanan County natives. He had made his home in the Tazewell County area for the past 36 years and was a retired miner from Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation at Vansant, Va. He was a former captain and paramedic for the Richlands Rescue Squad and was a graduate of Garden Creek High School, class of 1956. He was of the Holiness faith and a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors are his wife, Uva Lowe Wilson; one daughter, Tina Wilson Beavers and husband Donnie of Wardell; one son, Robert R. Wilson and wife Tamra of Pounding Mill, Va.; three sisters, Katherine Arrington of Bristol Virginia, Pauline Jackson of Rowe, Va., and Susie Hill of Craig County, Va.; three brothers, Paul Wilson of Walkertown, N.C., Rev. Frank Wilson of Mississippi and Rev. Jerry Wilson of Garden Creek, Va.; three grandchildren, Cullen Compton, Danyelle Wilson and Raylee Wilson; two step-grandchildren, Kelle Beavers and Brent Beavers; special aunt and uncle, Opal and Robert Hagy, and special caregiver, Paula Slate, also survives.
