Duncan CHILHOWIE – Janet Catron Duncan, 77, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at her home. Arrangements are incomplete. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Paul Grose RAVEN, Va. – Mr. Paul Grose, age 58, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at a Kingsport hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Raven and was a son of the late Clarence E. and Elsie Quick Grose, both Tazewell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Raven area and was a 1966 graduate of Richlands High School. He was a former employee of Bailey Lumber Company in Richlands and was of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Lee Grose. Survivors are one sister, Ms. Donna Dye of Raven; one brother, Mr. Sammy Grose and wife Brenda of Raven; niece, Amy Dye and fiancé Randy Keen; nephews, Kenny Dye and Mark Grose; great-niece, Heather Marie Lester; great- nephew, Harold Dakota Lester, and special friends, Ellen Richards, Crystal Bradshaw and Harold Lester, also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Paul Edward Grose will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, with Rev. Carl Robinson and Rev. Joe Gross officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Nelson, age 75, of 2607 Cold Springs Road, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone following a brief illness. He was a native of Johnson County and was born June 19, 1929, to the late John King Nelson Sr. and Cora Ann Smith Nelson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Nelson, and two sisters, Cricket Dickens and Vadie Mills. Mr. Nelson was a retired truck driver and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include three daughters, Delores Hedrick and husband Mike of Boone, N.C., Kendra Hodge of Easton, Md., and Sonya Proffitt and husband Joe of Mountain City; a son, Jeff Nelson and wife Bonnie of Mountain City; three sisters, Reba Wills, Chelsa Jones and Danford Smith, all of Mountain City; a brother, John King Nelson Jr. of Mountain City; 10 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and his special friends, Larry Snyder, Norman Pleasant, Boyd Fletcher, Wiley Tester, Brownie Blankenbeckler and Carl Jones, also survive. Henry Lee Spivey NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – Henry Lee (Slim) Spivey, age 85, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Tazewell Community Hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 7, 1919, at Freeman, W.Va., he was a son of the late Samuel Lee Spivey and Fannie Woods McHone. He was a heavy equipment operator, having worked at Harman Coal Company and later retiring from Jewell Smokeless Fuel Company. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Jessee Spivey, two sisters, Margaret Gilbert and Dolly Mae Rose, and one grandson, Bradley Spivey. Survivors include three sons, Scotty Wayne Spivey of Swords Creek, Va., Roger Lee Spivey of North Tazewell and Billy Joe Spivey of Marion; three sisters, Lolita Joyce Bowman of Swords Creek, Judith Lynn Mabe of Tazewell and Claudia Spivey of Bluefield, Va. Lillian Bernice Wiles BRISTOL, Tenn. – Lillian Bernice "Tot" Wiles, age 75, passed away Friday, July 2, 2004, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Abingdon and spent many years in Phoenix. She was the most caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid NASCAR fan and she loved flowers and watching the hummingbirds. She also loved country music and ice skating. Mrs. Wiles was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Rumley, an infant son, Ronnie Wiles, and a granddaughter, Paige Leonard. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, John F. Wiles; two daughters, Patti Leonard and husband Bob of Bristol Virginia and Betty Byrd and husband Jeff of Bristol Tennessee; three sons, John Wiles and wife Bev and Rick Wiles and wife Sharon, all of Phoenix, and David Wiles and wife Lisa of Bristol Tennessee; one sister of California; one brother, Lewis Rumley and wife Ann of Coeburn; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Scott Price officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
