Arnie Cantrell ABINGDON – Mr. Arnie Cantrell, age 90, formerly of Vansant, Va., died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness. Born in Lick Creek, Ky., on April 23, 1914, he was a son of the late Abe and Edie Cantrell. He was also preceded in death by a sister and several brothers. Arnie was the last surviving member of his siblings. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for most of his life. Mr. Cantrell retired from Harmon Coal Company after 33 years. He was a member of the UMWA District 20. He leaves behind his wife of 68 wonderful years, Jessie Cantrell; one loving and devoted daughter, Sharon Bartley and husband Eddie of Abingdon; two granddaughters that he was proud of, Catrina Ratliff and husband Cullen of Lebanon and Brittany Bartley and fiancι Robby Barrett of Abingdon, and a very special great-grandson, Dalton Ratliff. He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Lawson Mining in Coeburn, and was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Allen and Thelma Lee Edwards. Surviving are his wife, Patricia K. Irene was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great- grandmother and will be missed. Luckenbach, age 74, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass. He was a resident of Scituate for the past 42 years. He attended the First Baptist Church in North Scituate and sang in the choir there. He worked as office supervisor in a trucking firm for many years and retired in 1991. Born in Manchester, N.H., Sept. 8, 1929, son of Earl F. and Viola (Wasson) Luckenbach, he attended schools in Manchester and graduated from Manchester Central High School, Class of 1948. He is survived in his immediate family by one sister, Ruth Machado of Concord, N.J.; three brothers, Ronald W. Luckenbach of Sacramento, Calif., Earl C. Luckenbach of Bluff City and F. Bruce Luckenbach of Concord, N.H. He will be cremated and his ashes scattered. At his request, there will be no funeral or any services. The Cremation Society of Massachusetts assisted the family. Mitchell BRISTOL, Va. – Henry Ellis Mitchell, age 82, passed away on July 8, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was the son of the late William and Ida Kilgore Mitchell and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Mr. Mitchell retired from Beecham Laboratories, where he worked in the packing department. Morrell, age 71, 319 Hickory Tree Road, died Thursday July 8, 2004, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Sullivan County and son of the late John Mack and Nora C. Whittmore Morrell. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Allen Morrell, sister, Mary Lee Boyd, and brothers, Paul Morrell and J.M. Morrell. He retired from Sullivan County School System in 1989, served as Sullivan County commissioner, district I, for 25 years, member of South Holston Ruritan Club, a U.S. Air Force veteran, member of River Bend Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. On May 12, 2004, he was recognized as colonel aide de camp for special trust and confidence for his patriotism, valor and fidelity by Gov. Phil Bredesen. He was honorary sergeant of arms for Tennessee State legislators and speaker pro-tem for the Sullivan County Commission. Lillie M. Murphy CLINTWOOD – Lillie M. Murphy, age 88, died at Heritage Hall Health Care Center on Friday, July 9, 2004. She was the widow of Donald Murphy. Her parents, Alexander and Emma Sutherland; brothers, Noah, Ransom, Ira, John, Kenis and Sam; sisters, Inez Bell and Gusta Edwards; half-brothers, Morgan and Jim Sutherland; and half-sisters, Lou and Nancy Bell, preceded her in death. She had been a resident of Heritage Hall for three years and 10 months and was a member of Clinchco Freewill Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended as long as she was able to go. She loved the church and the members. She loved everyone, especially the staff of Heritage Hall. She always had a smile and told them how much she loved them. She said it was her home and she wanted to be there. She loved all the special attention that was shown to her. The family can never begin to repay them for the care, love and kindness shown there. It would be hard to single out one person. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Margaret L. Wesner BRISTOL, Tenn. – Margaret Lucille Wesner, age 78, died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was the daughter of the late George and Bessie Woodby Widner and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Ms. Wesner was a housewife and was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Ivan Nelson Wesner. Survivors include son, Eddie Laster and wife Connie; daughter, Connie Shipplett and husband Phil; adopted daughter, Nancy Cross; granddaughters, Lori Walker and husband Bill, Nikki Nash and husband Jason and Tara Shipplett; great- granddaughter, Lacy Walker; great-grandson, Tyler Shipplett; sister, Cora Woods and husband Jim, and brother, James Widner and wife Peggy. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Newman, and a brother, Charles "Bill" Widner. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Cass Farrior and Rev. Keith Williams officiating. Committal services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cleveland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6-7:45 p.m., prior to the service. Joseph James Widner BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mr. Joseph James (Joe Bill) Widner, age 77, of 290 Denton Valley Road, in the Offset community, went home to be with the Lord on July 7, 2004, following a long illness. He was born in Washington County, Va., to the late William Widner and Ellen Howington Widner. Mr. Widner was also preceded in death by son, James T. Widner, a daughter, Rhonda Widner Roberts, four brothers and three sisters. He had lived most of his life in the Offset community in Sullivan County and was a member and deacon of the South Chapel Baptist Church in Bristol Tennessee. Mr. Widner was a retired bus driver for Holston Bus Company. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Goldie R. Widner; three daughters, Margaret Hawkins and husband Marvin and Rita Johnson and husband Dennis, all of Bristol Tennessee, and Sharon Blevins and husband Billy of Abingdon; a daughter-in-law, Myrtle B. Widner of Damascus; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Farris Funeral Chapel, 427 E. Main St., with Brother Paul Maye and Brother Billy Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in the Alvarado community. Grandsons will serve as casket bearers. Burlin Yates GRUNDY – Burlin Yates, age 79, of Route 4, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, at his residence. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Dewey and Ida Stiltner Yates. He was a coal miner and a member of PawPaw Old Regular Baptist Church. Mr. Yates was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Hufford Yates, a sister, Lottie Vandyke, and a grandson, Jason Burlin Lester. Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Dorothy D. Yates; two daughters, Kathleen (Bradford) Boyd of Prater, Va., and Lucille (Jad) Justice of Forks, Wash.; four sons, Elder Jackie (Brenda) Yates and Clayton (Judy) Yates, all of Prater, Benny Yates of Haysi and Danny (Della) Yates of Vansant; three sisters, Margie Breeding of Ocala, Fla., and Berchie Blankenship and June Hamilton, both of Clyde, Ohio; seven brothers, John Henry Yates of Sandusky, Ohio, Lonzo Yates of Bryan, Ohio, Jessie Yates of Ney, Ohio, Rosevelt Yates of Clyde, Elzie Yates of Las Vegas, Jerry Yates of Troy, Mich., and Vada Yates of Grundy; 13 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight step- great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church, with Elders Roger Coleman, Andy Deel, Frank O’quinn, John R.
