Bailey Sr. ABINGDON – James McBride Bailey Sr., age 68, died July 9, 2004, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. Mr. Bailey was born in Abingdon and was of the Baptist faith. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force as airman 2nd class. He received a Good Conduct Medal in July 1958, and an honorable discharge from active military service in August 1958. He was preceded in death by his father Leander McBride Bailey, and his daughter, Eva Lou Bailey. Survivors include his mother, Eva Mae Bailey; one sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Johnny Singleton; one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Lillian Bailey, and two sons, James McBride "Mack" Bailey Jr. and wife Lisa and Carson Lane Bailey, all of Abingdon. He was "Pappaw Biggun" to his grandsons, Jonathan and Austin Bailey. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank his special friend, Pat Campbell, for her loving devotion and care to "Biggun." Dorothy M. Baldwin BRISTOL, Va. – Dorothy Meyer Baldwin passed away Friday, July 9, 2004. She was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Mercersburg, Pa., the daughter of the late George W. Meyer and Lizzie Wenger Meyer. She attended Messiah Academy at Grantham, Pa., where she met her husband, Martin E. Baldwin, from Chicago, who preceded her in death in 1976. She is survived by one daughter, Dianne Baldwin Brewer, and son-in-law, Thomas Brewer, of Bristol Tennessee. Others left to honor her memory include four sisters and one brother, Anna Engle (Mrs. Eldon) of Abilene, Kan., Pauline Kern, Upland, Calif., Edith Lesher (Mrs. Robert), Greencastle, Pa., Clara Eberly (Mrs. Carl), Hanford, Calif., and Dr. G. Edward Meyer, Bremen, Ind. Three grandchildren also survive: Kimberly Brewer, Johnson City, Dr. Mary Margaret Brewer, Chapel Hill, N.C., and John Brewer and wife Tabatha, Bristol Tennessee. She was a member of State Street United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women. Prior to coming to Bristol, she served with the Florida Conference United Methodist Women. In Bristol, she was active with the Christian Women’s Club, Church Women United and Holston Quilters Guild. The funeral service will be conducted at 6 o’clock Monday evening at State Street United Methodist Church, with Rev. Reed Shell and Rev. Sharon Wiley officiating. Charlie Boggs NORTON – Charlie Henry Boggs, 87, died Friday, July 9, 2004, in Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. Born in Dorchester, Va., he was a lifelong resident of the Norton area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norton. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Boggs was employed with the Virginia ABC and served as manager of the Norton store at his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Grace "Weetie" Boggs, Norton; son, Robert Fleet Boggs, Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, Lucy Grace Boggs and Samuel Isaac Fleetwood Boggs, both of Arlington; sister, Doris Benton, Norton; niece, Jane Adams, Jonesboro, Ga., and nephew, Mark Benton, Washington, D.C. Rouse BRISTOL, Va. – Clyde Watson Rouse, age 84, of 106 Sunrise Ave., went to be with the Lord Friday, July 9, 2004, at the Cambridge House. Mr. Rouse was born on Sept. 13, 1919, in Greendale, Va., to the late Ray Rouse and Margaret Bailey Rouse Stout. Mr. Rouse was retired from Lemmon Transport Company as a truck driver and was a member of Teamsters Union Local 549 and a veteran having served in World War II with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Rouse was a member of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and he loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Rouse was preceded in death by his stepfather, Elbert Stout, one daughter, Nancy Rouse Dishman, three brothers, Paul Rouse, Ralph Rouse and Lee Rouse, and two sisters, Lucille Vance and Edith Dutton. Mr. Rouse is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Collins Rouse; one daughter, Ruth R. Moretz and husband Lester D. of Bristol Tennessee; one son, Andy C. William Vander Vliet KNOXVILLE – William "Dutch" Vander Vliet, age 75, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 9, 2004, at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital. He served in the Korean conflict with the U.S. Army. After playing baseball in several cities with the New York Giants Farm League, he worked for Raytheon in Bristol and then retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1995. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Vander Vliet; sisters, Mae Breen Sachtleben and Marge Sachtleben, and brother, Robert W. Vander Vliet. Mr. Vander Vliet is survived by his wife, with whom he would have shared 54 years this September, Lois Hicks Vander Vliet; nephews and wives, William and Carolyn Sachtleben and Douglas and Robin Sachtleben and five children; nieces and husbands, Joy and Paul Vander Vliet and son Jacob and Gay and Ron Ellstrom.
