Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Cassandra "Cassie" Bostic, one brother, Randolph Call, and one sister, Nelle Call. Faris FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Douglas Dwight Faris, age 58, passed away July 9, 2004, at his home in Fayetteville, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Nov. 5, 1945, in Marion, to Gale L. and Lois Faris of Glade Spring. Although he was a native of Washington County, Va., he lived in South Carolina, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Maryland, and recently moved to Arkansas. Doug graduated form Emory & Henry College in 1968, with a B.A. in history and psychology. He was a member of the Blue Key Honor Society, a student government officer and captain of his football team. Doug received an M.A. in geography, with emphasis on resource planning and urban and regional studies and economic geography at the University of South Carolina in 1972. In 1973, he took a position as an environmental planner for the city of Denver. He also taught courses in land planning at Denver Metropolitan State College. In 1974, he began his permanent career with the National Park Service, after being a seasonal employee at Yellowstone in the late 1960s. From 1974-78, he was a planning team captain at the Denver Service Center and worked on plans for many parks, including the Fire Island National Seashore and Assateague Island National Seashore. He was a major player in developmental studies such as the Department of Interior’s Open Space and Recreation Study for the Greater New York City region. From 1978-80, Doug was project planner for the Lowell National Historic Park that was the first National Park dedicated to the industrial revolution in the country. In 1981, he was a park planner for the Southwest Regional Office of the National Park Service in Santa Fe, N.M. He was later promoted to associate regional director for the Southwest region. He had management oversight for legislative coordination, park planning, land protection planning and design, American Indian Affairs, Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance and Long Distance Trail Programs. For the last nine years he served as park superintendent for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park, which runs 185 miles from the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C., into Cumberland, Md. He had a long, distinguished career with the National Park Service and retired after 30 years in January 2004. Throughout his career, Doug received numerous awards including: United States Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award (2001); 2003 Superintendent of the Year for the National Capital Region; The Justice William O. Douglas Award for Leadership and Outstanding Achievement from the C & O Canal Association (2003); Conservation Achievement Award from the Southwest Regional Office of the National Park Service (1994); the 2003 Shoulder to Shoulder Partnership Award; and a Senate Tribute in the Congressional Record (Vol. 149, No. 121). In Fayetteville, Doug was a member of Sequoyah United Methodist Church. He was a consultant for the Northwest Arkansas Land Trust. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and was the family genealogist. Doug is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jean Spears Faris, Fayetteville; one daughter, Shelly Bohach and her husband Lt. Joshua J. G. Bohach, Jacksonville, Fla.; one son, Shane Faris, Springfield, Mo.; his parents, Gale L. and Lois Bethel Faris, Glade Spring; his brothers, Ron and his wife Charlotte Faris, Marion, and Gale L. Victor Keith Gross II HONAKER – Mr. Victor Keith Gross II, age 32, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at a Lebanon hospital following a brief illness. He was a 1990 graduate of Saluda South Carolina High School, attended Augusta Business College in Augusta, Ga., for two years, and was a former salesman. He made his home in the Tazewell and Russell County areas most of his life, residing in Honaker the past four years, and attended Lighthouse Assembly Church. Survivors in addition to his parents are his godmother, Mrs. Diane Fuller of Honaker; his godfather, Mr. Jerry Jackson of Honaker, and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. William Vander Vliet KNOXVILLE – William "Dutch" Vander Vliet, age 75, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 9, 2004, at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital. He served in the Korean conflict with the U.S. Army. After playing baseball in several cities with the New York Giants Farm League, he worked for Raytheon in Bristol and then retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1995. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Vander Vliet; sisters, Mae Breen Sachtleben and Marge Sachtleben, and brother, Robert W. Vander Vliet. Mr. Vander Vliet is survived by his wife, with whom he would have shared 54 years this September, Lois Hicks Vander Vliet; nephews and wives, William and Carolyn Sachtleben and Douglas and Robin Sachtleben and five children; nieces and husbands, Joy and Paul Vander Vliet and son Jacob and Gay and Ron Ellstrom. VanHuss BLUFF CITY – Elaine Carrier VanHuss, 69, of Pioneer subdivision, went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 10, 2004, from her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a daughter of the late William Cecil and Emma Dyche Carrier and was the widow of Haskiel "Hack" VanHuss. She was a retired accountant with Unisys and a member of Bluff City Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Carrier, and her brother, Cecil Carrier. Survivors include a niece, Cindi McBroom; three nephews, Mike Carrier and his wife Sue, David Carrier and Mark Carrier and his wife Sherry; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Carrier; great-nieces, Angie Chase and her husband Justin, Leah Carrier, Marsha Carrier and Anna-Marie Carrier; great-nephews, Chase Carrier, Chad Carrier and Andrew Carrier. William Ward BIG STONE GAP – William "Buddy" Ward, age 71, died July 10, 2004, in Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap. He lived most of his life in Wise and Lee County, was of the Christian faith and a former local business owner. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict in Europe. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Ward, and his parents, brothers and sisters. Williams, age 83, of 2434 Windsor Ave., passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, in the DeKalb Medical Center in Decatur. Mr. Williams was born on May 31, 1921, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Walter L. and Sarah L. Trivette Williams. He was retired from Cowan Brothers Wholesale and a member of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Williams was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Williams was a member of the VFW, King Masonic Lodge 461, Anderson Chapter, St. Omer Commandry, Scottish and York Rite, KYCH, Bristol Shrine Club, Royal Order of Scotland and a member of the Eastern Star. He served as past high priest, past master, past elustricious master, past president of the Bristol Shrine Club, past president of the Scottish Rite Club, past commander, a past member of the Masonic Veterans Association of Tennessee and a past member of the North East Tennessee York Rite College. Mr. Williams was a trustee emeritus of the First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Jericho Shrine Temple. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, La Una Mae Williams; one son, Richard Taylor Williams of Johnson City; one daughter, Barbara Jean Boyd of Bristol Tennessee; two stepdaughters, Heather Louise Anderson of Alpharetta, Ga., and Leah Ellen Chapman of Conway, Ark., and one stepson, Joseph Gratton Crockett III of Gainesville, Ga. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kathy Wilson-Parker officiating. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted by King Masonic Lodge.
