Born in Buchanan County, Jan. 11, 1963, she was the daughter of Betty Jane (Edna) Blankenship and the late Leonard Blankenship. She was of the Christian faith, 1981 graduate of Hurley High School, a certified pharmacy technician, former employee of J.C. Penny’s and currently employed by Buchanan County Rural Family Practice. In additional to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Tammy Denise Blankenship; and one uncle, Cecil Blankenship. She is survived by her mother, Betty Jane (Edna) Blankenship of Hurley, Va.; her husband of 16 years, Donald (Dude) Baker of Grundy; three sisters, Patsy Scott of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Linda Powers of Wytheville and Judy Newberry of Vansant, Va.; and three brothers, Auldia Blankenship of Hurley, Austin Blankenship of Wolford, Va., and Terry Blankenship of Hurley. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews. Virginia Calhoun WYTHEVILLE – Virginia "Gin" Calhoun, age 81, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born on March 28, 1923, in Smyth County to the late William Aaron and Florence Pennington Calhoun. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Cox and Katy Catron; and one brother, Joe Calhoun. Ms. Calhoun was a member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church in Atkins, Va., and had lived in Wytheville for many years. She is survived by one sister, Anna Catron of Atkins; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Seaver- Brown Chapel, with Rev. Carrier, age 80, died July 12, 2004, in Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Grent Bend. Born Aug. 13, 1923, in Sullivan County, Tenn., he was the son of Roy T. and Lennie Osborne Carrier. He married LaVina C. Hoffman on Dec. 3, 1945, at Great Bend. She survives. He was a self-employed certified welder, Carrier Welding. Also, he worked for Tennessee Valley Authority, Bristol Tennessee, O’Neil Tank Company for 23 years, Papay Water Service and later at Fuller Brush as a security guard before retirement. He resided in Great Bend since 1953, coming from Bluff City. He was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1942-1945 with the 20th 444 Bombing Group, with the rank of corporal. He belonged to the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, VFW Post 3111, both of Great Bend, and the American Motorcycle Association. Survivors: wife, LaVina of the home; two sons, David Carrier, Albert, Kan., and Thomas Carrier, Mustang, Okla.; two daughters, Vickie Brown, Great Bend and Nancy Tiede, Parsons, Kan.; two brothers, Bruce Carrier, Bluff City and Obia Carrier, Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Born Oct. 8, 1932, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late James Clovis and Nancy Victoria Arms Cook. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dellie Fay Cook on July 6, 2003, one infant son, and one sister, Margaret Lester. He served in the U.S. Army’s 461st Anti Aircraft Artillery Weapons Battalion during World War II, as well as, in the invasion of Normandy. During his service, he was awarded a European Theatre Operations Medal and a Bronze and Silver Star medal. Mr. Sword was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah J. Opal Sayers White LYNCHBURG, Va. – Mrs. Opal Sayers White, age 83, formerly of Richlands, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Lynchburg, following a long illness. Woodward ABINGDON – World War II veteran and educator, William Kenneth Woodward, departed this life on Saturday, July 10, 2004. He was born in Saltville, on Oct. 19, 1921, and was one of 11 children. He married Clara Rector of Clinchburg, Va., and immediately set sail for four long years serving his country on the USS LST 315 and the USS LST 1110 during World War II. He received both the Asiatic Pacific and the European Africa Middle Eastern Campaign Medals from the U.S. Navy. After the war, he moved to Oregon, where he received his BA and master’s degree from Oregon State University. He settled in Northern Virginia, where he worked as a high school educator for Fairfax County Schools until his retirement in 1978. He taught at George Mason High School, Madison High School, Edison High School and Lake Braddock High School. He was an expert architect and craftsman and a long-standing member of the Freemasons. His proudest accomplishments remain his family of five children, Billie Woodward Cummings of Woodstock, Va., Mary Woodward Clark of Williamsburg, Va., Susan Woodward of Woodstock, Kathryn Woodward Smerdzinski of Vienna, Va., and William Kenneth Woodward Jr. of Maurertown, Va.; as well as his 10 grandchildren; and great-granddaughter. His survivors also include Clara Rector Woodward of New Market, Va.; and two brothers, Jack Woodward of South Boston, Va., and David Woodward of Marion, Va. He will be remembered for his indelible sense of humor during many hardships and challenges and for the unconditional support he gave to his family, his students and those who knew him. A private memorial service will be held in his honor with the immediate family. Contributions may be made in his name to the World War II U.S. Navy Memorial Fund.
