She had been a resident of Kemmer Gem, Va., and had lived the past 19 years in Marion. Georgia was a homemaker and a member of the Abundant Life Christian Church in Marion. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen M. Carter; two daughters, Lillie Mae Carter and Elizabeth Ruth Carter; two sons, Charles and Larry Carter; and her parents, William and Nannie Fleeman. Georgia is survived by two sons, Roger Carter and wife, Reda and Roy Carter and wife Louise, all of Bristol Tennessee; four daughters, Barbara Ritzo and husband, Johnny of Kingsport, Lucille Alexander and husband James of Blackwater, Va., Betty Dyson and husband, Joe of Marion and Thelma Witt of Marion; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends. Copley ABINGDON – Mrs. Myrtle Romans Copley, age 89, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was born on June 12, 1915, in Mango County, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late William and Ida Romans. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Averal Bias Jr. Mrs. Copley was a member of the Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Chauncey, W.Va., and attended the Church of the Nazarene in Abingdon. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Elmer Copley; four sons, Carl Copley and wife Patsie of West Chester, Ohio, Bob Copley and wife Phyllis of Johnson City, Alfred Copley and wife Angie of Abingdon and Danny Copley and wife Marty of Ft. Myers, Fla.; four daughters, Beulah Bias of Cleveland, Ohio; Helen Riffe and husband Jim of Rockville, Ind., Lois Kroll and husband John of Greenwood, Ind., and Elfreda Leckie and husband Norman of Dandridge, Tenn.; a sister, Lois Lucas of Huntington, W.Va.; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Davis, age 37, passed away Friday, July 16, 2004, at home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Ishpeming, Mich., and was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend. David Ray Evans ABINGDON – Mr. David Ray Evans, age 55, formerly of Belfry, Ky., passed away July 16, 2004, at 12:45 p.m. in Johnston Memorial Hospital, following a short illness. David was born on April 19, 1949, in Grundy, to the late Minister Eugene Evans and Nora Matney Evans. He attended Sharondale Grade School and was a graduate of Belfry High School. He was a disabled coal miner, with a mining career of over 30 years, which included Eastern Coal Company of Stone, Ky., Clinchfield Coal Company, Lebanon and Sidney Coal Company, Sidney, Ky., before becoming disabled. Survivors: David was a loving husband for 36 years to his wife, Patsy Ann (Pecco) Evans; a father to three wonderful children, Candy Renee’ Jones, Paul David Evans and Heather Cecile Evans, all of Abingdon; a loving grandfather to three wonderful grandkids, Kara Evans, Castlewood and Scott Thomas and Aundrea Jones, both of Abingdon; brothers, Donald (Helen) Evans, Abingdon and Clinton (Debbie) Evans, Grundy; and sisters, Reba Rasnake, Claypool Hill, Va., Eleanor (Zed) Ball, Rosedale, Va., and Elizabeth (Lynn) Blevins, Bristol Virginia. Marshall JOHNSON CITY – Walter Carson Marshall, age 91, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Coalwood, W.Va., but lived most of his life in East Tennessee. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force. He received a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee and a M.A. degree from East Tennessee State University. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Mr. Marshall was a former teacher in the Sullivan County Schools, before transferring to the Bristol City School System to teach vocational studies at Tennessee High School. He also taught adult classes for East Tennessee State University. In addition to a long teaching career, he was a specialist in income tax work and a craftsman and builder. He was active in community affairs and area historic and civic groups. A quiet and dignified person, Carson never wanted to appear he was bragging about his many, many accomplishments. Among his major interests was travel. He and his wife toured every state in the Union, including Hawaii and Alaska, and numerous foreign countries. Carson was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Knight Marshall, who was a long-time music teacher in the Bristol Elementary Schools, and a brother, Billy Joe Marshall of Johnson City. Survivors include his two sisters, Etta Mae Leach and Martha Marshall, both of Johnson City; two nieces, Karen Whittaker and Susan Wallace; two great-nieces, Susan Ballard and Allison Wallace; and one great-great-nephew, Johnathon Ballard. Born March 12, 1931, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late Arthur and Janie Marshall Reynolds. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with E. Dillon & Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Reynolds. Keith Dempsey Speer DAMASCUS – Dr. Keith Dempsey Speer, 77 years of age, formerly of Grundy, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Watuaga Lake, attempting to save another boater that had capsized. Born in Cumberland , Ky., he was a son of the late Dr. Harold and Elizabeth Caudill Speer, and was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church of Abingdon. He was a resident of Grundy several years, where his father, Dr. Harold Speer, had established a dental practice. Dr. Keith Speer then joined his father in practice, continuing a fourth generation with 16 dentists in their family. Dr. Keith Speer served the Grundy area for 38 years before moving to the Abingdon area, where he continued his practice in dentistry. He then returned to Grundy to his dental practice, where he served the area until his retirement. He was a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1943. After graduating from high school, he entered the Naval Reserve Officer Corps at Berea College. He attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1950, where he was a member of the Omicron Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He continued his studies, graduating from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of yeoman third class USNR, receiving several awards and medals and being discharged in 1946. While a resident of Grundy, he was the former president of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce, served on the Airport Commission, served on the Breaks Park Commission, was a member of Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF&AM of Grundy, where he was to receive the 50-year Masonic Pin in November this year and a member of the Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Va. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel on June 9, 1966, and was a licensed pilot since 1968. He was a member of the American Dental Association and the Virginia Dental Association. He served on the Virginia State Legislature for the terms of 1964, 1966 and 1968. Dr. Speer was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Belcher Speer, on Dec. 6, 1983. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Isabella Richardson Taylor, and had worked as a quality control inspector at AIWF in Exton, Pa. Carlos Henry Turner CLEVELAND, Va. – Mr. Carlos Henry "Spud" Turner, age 69, of the Cracker’s Neck section, passed away Saturday morning, July 17, 2004, in a Lebanon hospital. Born July 27, 1934, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late George and Lois Combs Turner. He had spent most of his life in the area and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed by Island Creek Coal Company and a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, JoAnn Maxfield; and one brother-in-law, Richard Maxfield. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Turner of the home; four daughters and sons- in-law, Sherry Lynn and Ralph Hubbard, Teresa Sue and Tommy Mitchell, Carline and Paul Stinson and Cindy Huffman and Harvey Honaker, all of Cleveland, Va.; one son, Mitchell Grizzle of Lebanon; one stepdaughter, Janie Murphy of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; three sisters, Georgia Maxfield and her husband, Fred of Roanoke, Brownie Compton and her husband, Claude of Honaker and Lois Maxfield of Honaker; one brother, Dewey "Tater" Turner of Lebanon; nine grandchildren, Jonathan Hubbard, Jonas Hubbard, Tabitha Mitchell, Benjamin Mitchell, Cody Lane Stinson, Christine Huffman, Makayla Honaker, B.J. "Ed" Young, age 72, entered into eternal rest Friday, July 16, 2004, in Wellmont Hospice House, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Franklin S. and Beula Campbell Young. Mr. Young served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years and was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association. He retired from Camac-Universal Fiber Systems after several years of service, where he was the manager of personnel and purchasing. He was a lifelong, avid farmer and a member of Three Springs Baptist Church. Mr. Young was a loving husband, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. He was a friend to all and loved by many.
