Ross, 81, Marion Bonnie Miller Spriggs, 89, Meadowview Kermit Grey Chaney GRUNDY – Kermit Grey Chaney, 80 years of age, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004, following an extended illness. Born at Millard, Ky., he was a son of the late Jeff and Myrtie Belcher Chaney. He had been a resident of the Grundy area several years and was a retired coal miner. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Chaney is survived by his wife, Anna Farmer Chaney, Grundy; one son, Curtis E. (Pete) and wife, Karen Chaney, Pounding Mill, Va.; one granddaughter, Victoria (Tori) Chaney, Pounding Mill; and one special niece, Miranda Steward, Big Rock, Va. Also, he is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Cleo Fife, Edith Harrison, Beatrice Childress and Imal Harvel; and two brothers: Cecil and Sonny Chaney. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements. Buford "Bo" Crouse CHILHOWIE – Buford "Bo" Crouse, age 64, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 17, 2004. He died peacefully with his family at his side at this home in Seven Mile Ford following his fight with cancer. Born March 18, 1940, to the late Robert and Dosha Weaver Crouse, he was an active member of Gethsemane Baptist Church and, following 32 years of service, was retired from the H.S. Williams Company. In addition to his parents, Mr. Crouse was preceded in death by five brothers, Jack, Ray, Bud, Roy, and Earl Crouse. He is survived by his wife, Deane "Dee" Crouse of Chilhowie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Vickie Crouse of Chilhowie and John and Becky Crouse of Marion; one daughter, Tina Hayden of Chilhowie; and four grandchildren, C.J. Crouse of Kannapolis, N.C., Andrew Crouse of Marion, and Kristen Gillespie and Katie Hayden, both of Chilhowie. He is also survived by 10 brothers and sisters, Lila Brooks and Nancy McAllister of Marion, Bonny Hinchey of Meadowview, Betty Trivette and Joan Sproles, both of Bristol Virginia, Paul Crouse of Marion, Harold Crouse and Junior Crouse, both of Chilhowie, Larry Crouse of Sugar Grove and Ed Crouse of Bristol Virginia. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Crouse was a warm, loving man, who cherished his time with family and friends. An avid outdoorsman, he could often be found taking his grandchildren fishing in nearby ponds or walking the fields with his beloved rabbit beagles. He looked forward to deer season each year and never missed a chance to spend it with those he loved. He was a remarkable man and his gentle spirit will be immeasurably missed by those whose lives he touched. Donald Hagy VANSANT, Va. – Donald Hagy, 79 years of age, of the Leemaster section, passed away Friday, July 16, 2004, at his home. Born in Buchanan County, Feb. 23, 1925, he was the son of the late Jacob Hagy and Kansas Yates Hagy. He was a life member of the Big Prater Baptist Church and retired from United Coal Corp., where he worked as a mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in European-African Eastern Campaign Theater and was a former P.O.W. He had received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Distinguished Service Cross, Honorable Service Lapel Button World War II, Marksman Badge w/Rifle Bar, was a former P.O.W. and a member of the John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion, In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mable Boyd Hagy, Nov. 21, 1998; one sister, Ada Haden; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Hall was born on July 31, 1915, to the late Tilden and Nannie Nelson Brown in Bristol Tennessee. She lived in the Bristol area all her life, where she was a housewife and a member of Willow Branch Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Bascom Hall. Mr. Leonard retired as a supervisor for Bristol Steel, with 35 years of service. He was a member of Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church and he enjoyed raising and showing horses. He was a member of the American Saddle Bred Association and was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in the Asian Pacific Theater. Spriggs MEADOWVIEW – Mrs. Bonnie Miller Spriggs, age 89, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Grace Health Care of Abingdon. Bonnie was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church, was active in the nursing home Bible study and was a member of the Greenfield Women’s Missionary Union. She was employed with Big Jack in Bristol for 40 years. After the plant closed, she retired from Buster Brown in Chilhowie, with more than 50 years in the sewing industry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fullen Spriggs, her mother, Hattie Lee Jones Miller, and two brothers, Fred and J. C. Survivors include two brothers, Calvin C. Miller, Bluff City, and Raymond Miller, Kingston, N.C.; a sister, Opal B. Miller, Bristol Virginia; several nieces and nephews; and special extended family, Bill "Butch" and Becky Musick and Bill and Judy Osborne. Mr. Carlos Henry "Spud" Turner, age 69, of the Cracker’s Neck section, passed away Saturday morning, July 17, 2004, in a Lebanon hospital. Jeffery Hugh White ABINGDON – Col. (Ret.) Jeffery Hugh White, age 62, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 16, 2004, following injuries received in a farming accident. He was born June 17, 1942, in Buchanan County, Va., to the late Early E. and Mazie (Frazier) White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Tom White. Jeff is survived by his wife, Laura; children, Joshua, Lauren and Kim Bush; grandchildren, Mitchel and Shelby; and nephew, Bandon White. A graduate of Auburn University, a retired U.S. Army colonel, Jeff’s medals and honors included two Legion of Merit Medals, two Bronze Stars with Valor, three Purple Hearts, three Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medal, five Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal-31 Years Service, Army Service Ribbon, Ranger Qualified, National Defense Ribbon, Vietnam Service Ribbon, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal-Saudi Arabia, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Master Parachutist. Jeff was a graduate of the Army War College, Command General Staff College, and numerous other military Schools. Jeff’s military career began as an enlisted member of the U.S. Army. Following Jeff’s first year in the U.S. Army, he entered Officer Candidate School, graduating a second lieutenant. Col. White served two tours in Vietnam with 1st Cavalry, 82nd Airborne, three tours of duty in Korea and served During Desert Storm as the officer in charge, Tactical Command Post under the command of Lt. Gen. Gary Luck. Jeff White was very active in the Abingdon community. He shared his love of scouting with the community as the Cub master for Pack 20, den leader, Pack 20 and assistant Scout master, Troop 222. Jeff was a soccer coach in the Highlands Soccer Association. Jeff was an avid horse enthusiast, who loved their kind and gentle nature. The Whites are members of Providence Community Church. Jeff taught Sunday School for the 3rd- 5th grades. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at the Farris Funeral Chapel, 427 East Main St., with Rev. John Thrasher officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
