Bailey KINGSPORT – Marceline Burnett Bailey, of 4008 Nickleby Court, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in the Holston Valley Medical Center, after a courageous 10-year battle with ovarian cancer. Mrs. Bailey was born in Haysi to the late Gideon and Minnie Byers Burnett. Mrs. Bailey had lived most of her life in the Bristol and Blountville area before moving to Kingsport in 2001. She retired from Unysis and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blountville. Her courage and positive attitude were an inspiration to all who knew her. Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Bailey, one sister, Lois Hentzman, and one brother, James Burnett. Mrs. Bailey is survived by one daughter, Debi Johnson and husband Rob, of Kingsport; one grandson, Todd Johnson, of Johnson City; one granddaughter, Marti Cleveland and husband Fred, of Johnson City; one sister, Lucille Williams, of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, Harold Burnett, of Bristol Tennessee; adopted family, Julie, Mike and Alex Phillips; two special sisters-in-law, Kathleen Jordan and Nannie Kate White; one brother-in-law, Fred Hentzman, of Baltimore; one special niece, Rita Mott, of Johnson City; one special nephew, Jimmy Jordan, of Bristol Tennessee; several other nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Graveside service will be held Friday, July 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the East Lawn Memorial Park, with Pastor Clay Austin officiating. She taught school in Japan, Wyoming, Virginia’s Prince William and Smyth County, where she retired from Marion Middle School in 1994. She loved children and was dedicated to teaching them. Mrs. Canter was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Martha Griffitts, and a sister, Lenore Griffitts Rouse. Dungan SEVEN MILE FORD, Va. – Mildred Rector Dungan, 98, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va. Born June 2, 1906, in Seven Mile Ford, she was the youngest child of Thomas B. Rector and Mary Ella Bonham Rector. She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. "Ted" Dungan; one granddaughter, Jennifer L. Dungan; three brothers; and eight sisters. A graduate of Marion College and Emory & Henry College, she began her teaching career in a one-room school in Smyth County and continued teaching in the county, until a family move to Alexandria, Va., in 1955. There she continued her career, until retiring in 1971. After the death of her husband of 40 years, James J. Dungan, she moved to Glade Spring, where she took an active part in the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at Old Glade and was a member of the Glade Spring Garden Club. She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church, Winchester, and several educational organizations. In more recent years, she lived with her son, Gary, and wife, Anne, in New Orleans, and since l998, with her daughter, Carolyn Woodrum and husband, Ray in Winchester. In addition to her son and daughter, she is survived by four grandchildren, Andrew S. Woodrum, Matthew T. Woodrum, Sarah L. Dungan and Anne Elizabeth Dungan; one great-grandson, Colby Scott Woodrum; and four nieces, Elsie Walker, Mary Ella Pennington, Carley Greer and Sarah Marie Dungan. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Vance Jefferson McCloud in 1967, her second husband, Booker F. He was born Aug. 10, 1928. Worley was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He retired from Clinchfield Coal Company with 34 years of service. Mr. Mullins was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, a member of Pyles Memorial Church for 47 years and a deacon at the church for 38 years. Worley was preceded in death by his parents, James C. (Blue) Mullins and Delphia Mullins; three brothers, Darwin Mullins, Denver Mullins and Leslie Mullins; three sisters, Mae Mullins, Nellie Mullins and Maggie Johnson; and a grandson, Craig Martin Mullins. Mary Jane Robbins MARION – Mary Jane Robbins, age 71, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at her home. Born May 16, 1939, in Russell County, a son of Roy Emilee Smith and the late Ida Smith, he was retired from Clinchfield Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Smith and a brother, Willis Smith. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Betty Smith; four sons, Scottie Smith and wife Kim, Michael Smith and wife Dawn, Benny Smith and wife Holly, and Eddie Smith and wife Debra, all of Lebanon; one daughter, Teressa Dye and husband Eddie of Lebanon; 10 grandchildren, Molly, Katie and Clayton Smith, Colby, Rebecca, Lucas and Jacob Smith, Josh and Daniel Dye and Tyler Ore; father, Roy E. Benjamin Williams Jr. ROANOKE – Benjamin Franklin Williams Jr., 86, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2004. He was born April 15, 1918, in Appalachia, Va., a son of the late Benjamin F. Williams Sr. and Clara Moss Williams, and was preceded in death by his brother, Derrill Williams; and his sister, Leontine Williams. He was employed by the Interstate Railroad from 1934 to 1965. His career is featured in the chapter of "Interstate Railroad, Memories of an Appalachian Short Line." He later worked for the Holston Defense Corporation in Kingsport and the Norfolk & Western Railway, where he retired as machinist in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the 131st Transportation Corps, in both the Philippines and Korea. Hewas a member of the VFW Post 5715 in Big Stone Gap, where he served as commander. Ben was recognized as a master mechanic, who could fix anything on wheels, as his progression of fixing up cars and trucks, usually Fords, demonstrated. In retirement, Ben and Virginia enjoyed the water, living on Smith Mountain Lake for 20 years. Ben and Virginia celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on June 3, 2004. He is survived by his devoted wife, the former Virgnia Fletcher Williams of Big Stone Gap; his sons and daughters-in-law, Ben III and Emma Williams of Dumfries, Va., David and Ann Williams of Clifton, Va., and Chris and Barbara Williams of Roanoke; his grandchildren, Jessica Parker of Dumfries, Kristin Williams of Miami, Schon Williams and wife Flora, of Glen Allen, Va., Benjamin Williams of Dumfries and Jeremy Williams of Roanoke; his great-grandchildren, Alexa and Brandon Parker of Dumfries. The family expresses their appreciation to the staff and management of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem, Va., and Dr. Kelleher at Cave Spring Family Practice for their care and concern for Ben. A funeral service will be held at Smith Mountain Lake Community Church, Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at 5 p.m., with the Rev. Jerry Naff officiating. A graveside service will be held in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Thursday at noon, with the Rev. Bob Button officiating, with military honors to follow.
