Wayne Abel ABINGDON – Mr. Kenneth Wayne Abel, age 67, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 17, 1936, in Washington County, Va., to the late Joseph Lester Abel and Julia Ida Lewis Abel. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Wallace "Wad" Abel, Joseph "June" Lester Abel Jr., and his sisters, Lillian Jones and Virginia Hunter. Mr. Abel enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was an influence on many lives in his church and community. He was a member of Green Spring Presbyterian Church, where he had served the church as and elder, deacon, a member of the choir, youth leader for the youth ministry and the founder of the Children’s Church. Wayne was a faithful fan of Washington County sports and served as coach for junior varsity baseball at John Battle and was the scores keeper for Abingdon High School varsity baseball team. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Ann Abel; a daughter, Rebekah Abel Lamar and husband Ashley of Decatur, Ga.; two sons, Todd Abel of Norton and Adam Abel of Abingdon; two brothers, Jack Abel of Abingdon and Bill Abel of Bristol Virginia; six sisters, Martha Ketron and Grace Odum of Bristol Virginia, Louise Schwartz of Jonesborough, Tenn., Katherine Saul of Bristol Tennessee, Sue Gibson of Knoxville and Phyllis Abel of Abingdon; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2004, in the Green Spring Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Lawrence Chapin and Rev. Frank Preston officiating. Emmett Buckles Jr. LEBANON – Emmett Buckles Jr., 98, of 142 Lively Ave., died Friday, July 23, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center. Born Aug. 17, 1905, in Russell County, a son of the late Emmett Buckles Sr. and the late Liza Ellen Cumbow Buckles, he was the husband of the late Alma Kiser Buckles. He retired as manager of the Russell Cooperative in Lebanon and was the oldest living member of the Green Valley Baptist Church, where he had served in many offices in the church. He enjoyed playing the piano and fishing. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and four sisters. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Faye Buckles of the home; a grandson, William Buckles and his wife Kristy, Roanoke; a granddaughter, Terri Lahlou and her husband Omar, Arlington; two great-grandsons, Tyler Buckles and Zack Lahlou; also several nieces and nephews. Henry Hatcher Jr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Henry Hatcher Jr., age 77, 419 Belmont Dr., went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 22, 2004, at his home. He was born on Dec. 13, 1926, a son of the late Henry Sr. and Myrtle Tillison Hatcher, and was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Hatcher. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and the owner and operator of Hatcher Brothers Used Cars. Also for many years, he was the co-owner of Bristol Caverns and a member of the Edgemont Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon emeritus. He was the third child of seven children. He peaceably answered God’s call on Wednesday, July 21, 2004. Thomas was a very active person right from the start. He was pitcher on the Little League baseball team. He attended Douglass School, where he played football, basketball and played trumpet in the Douglass marching band. After graduating from Douglass, Thomas attended Morristown College in Morristown, Tenn. Thomas then joined the Army, where he served 17 years. He was a sergeant and fought two tours in the Vietnam War for his country. Thomas is survived by his mother, Elvira Houston Smith; his wife, Karen Houston; four sons, Donald Houston, Alfonzo Brooks, Elliott Smith and Sydney Houston; four daughters, Amy Houston Mitchell, Elizabeth Houston Taylor, Linda Houston and Logan Houston; two brothers, Morris Houston and William Stewart; two sisters, Uradell Clayton and Helen Jones; seven grandchildren; one great- grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born Feb. 26, 1935, in Russell County, a son of the late Cecil and Mary Austin Ring, he had lived his entire life in Russell County. A former chairman of the Russell County Republican Party, he was a former chief jailor for Russell County during the terms of Sheriff Jack Monk. He was a founding partner in Russell Land and Auction Company and was an auctioneer and real estate developer. He was a founding member of Russell County Rescue Squad, veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M., Castlewood Royal Arch Chapter 34, the Bristol Commandrey and the Kazim Shrine Temple in Roanoke. He was a member of the Virginia Auctioneers Association, was a Kentucky Colonel and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell Ring and an infant brother, Kenneth Ring. Lillian Kay Robins LEBANON – Lillian Kay Robins, 41, of the Cross Roads section, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Hospice House, following a short illness. She was born in Russell County, Va., on Oct. 4, 1962, the daughter of Robert and Marion Gray Statzer Salyer. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her father and several uncles and aunts. William Ross Shell ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – Mr. William Ross Shell, 95, 122 Hartley Road, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, Tenn. Mr. Shell was a Carter County native, born June 10, 1909, to the late Noah and Dora Shell as one of six children. He retired in 1971 as a Bemberg/North American Rayon shift supervisor. Mr. Shell was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army’s Signal Corps in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of East River Park Christian Church. In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Zana Elizabeth Dobbs Shell, in 1967, and his second wife, Pauline Yates Shell, in 2001. Survivors include a daughter, Helen Carol Shell, Elizabethton; a son, Jerry Shell, Bristol Tennessee; two stepdaughters, Tonya Kay Woods, Elizabethton, and Rebekah Hunt, Johnson City; a granddaughter, Michelle Hershey, Elizabethton; a great-granddaughter, Savannah Hershey, Elizabethton; step-granddaughter, Paula Flack, St. Cloud, Fla.; step-grandson, Andy Woods, Noblesville, Ind.; and two step-great-grandchildren, Logan Woods, Pendleton, Ind., and Alyssa Woods, St. Cloud. Deward Taylor HONAKER – Mr. Deward Taylor, age 82, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004, in a Charlottesville hospital. Born Feb. 22, 1922, in Honaker, he was a son of the late Nathan and Annie C. Hess Taylor. A lifelong resident of the area, he attended Swords Creek Block Church and Pine Creek Holiness Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of the Casey-Shortt DAV Chapter of Richlands and VFW 9343 Post of Honaker. He was a retired coal miner and Virginia Department of Transportation employee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Taylor, Clyde Taylor and Cecil Taylor, and one son-in-law, Darrell White. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ethel Plaster Taylor of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dora and Gary Street of Honaker, Melissa and Glen White and Margaret White, all of Swords Creek; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patricia Taylor of Honaker, Larry and Cathy Taylor of Wendell, N.C., and Darrell and Carol Taylor of Swords Creek; five sisters, Mrs. Bessie Kirk of Marion, Mrs. Visie Shrader of Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Gladys Hess of Culpeper, Va., and Mrs. Flossie Hess and Tina Lockhart, both of Honaker; one brother, Garland Taylor of Honaker; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.
