Yates, 80, Grundy Georgia D. Bishop BRISTOL, Tenn. – Georgia Day Bishop, 353 Painter Creek Road, died Thursday July 29, 2004, after a long illness in Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in McDowell County, W.Va., on Oct. 26, 1941, she moved from there, with her husband in 1965, and lived the next nine years in Ashtabula, Ohio. In 1974, they made their home, with their children, in Bristol Tennessee. She was a faithful member of Painter Creek Church of Christ, loved attending church and gospel music. She was employed as a bread maker with Food City from 1987 until 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Chattie Day of Jolo, W.Va. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Conley L. Bishop; daughters, Victoria Ruth Morrell, her husband, James, and their children, Andrew and Jerrika, Goose Creek, S.C., and Connie Hopkins, her husband, Edsel, and their children, Savanah and Dakota, Bristol Virginia; sons, Rick Bishop his wife, Melissa "Mitzi," and their children, Justin and Anissa, Bluff City, and Michael Bishop and his wife, Rachel, Bristol Virginia, and sister, Ms. Geneva Keene, Jolo. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, in Painter Creek Church of Christ, with Richard Gaminde, James Ling and Kermit Calhoun officiating. Stewart Elswick HARMAN, Va. – Stewart Elswick, 92 years of age, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Ky., following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late James and Elzena Stiltner Elswick. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 7025. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and received the award for the oldest Elswick man attending the Elswick Reunion at the Breaks Park for nine consecutive years. Mr. Elswick was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Honaker Elswick, Feb. 5, 2004. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mae Gentry, Artie Ratliff and Lissie Severt, and five brothers, Bart, Harlas, Dewey, Alvin and Lewis Elswick. Hatten Mullins Sr. GALION, Ohio – Hatten Mullins Sr., age 84, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at home, after an extended illness. Born in Haysi, he was a son of the late Arvil and Judy Mullins. He married Sharlene (Atkins) Mullins on May 16, 2001, and she survives. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946. He was a self-employed coal miner in Haysi until 1964, when he moved to Galion. He worked at A.M. Castle Metals until his retirement in 1983. During that time, he was also the owner/operator of Hap’s Custom Welding. He enjoyed country music, history and spending time with and reminiscing with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford, Leonard "Dock" and Rosbal "Peanut" Mullins, and his first wife, Wanda (Hamon) Mullins on Feb. 23, 1990. They were married July 27, 1947. Jeanine C. Pardue EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Jeanine C. Pardue, 81, formerly of Bristol Virginia and West Chester, Pa., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, after a short illness, surrounded by her family who loved her. She was the wife of the late Wiley S. Pardue, who passed away in September 2000, and with whom she shared 58 years of marriage. Born in Ancerville (Meuse), France, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Marie Boucher Klein. Jeanine married Wiley, an American soldier, during post-war Europe. As an American war bride, she came to the United States, learned the English language and worked hard all her life to provide for her family. She and her husband lived in his home state of Tennessee at first, but lived most of their married life in Pennsylvania. She worked for several years as a laboratory technician for Wyeth Labs in West Chester, before moving to Bristol Virginia for retirement in 1990. Jeanine loved to garden, was an accomplished painter, led a writers’ group at the Bristol senior center for several years and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and board games of all kinds. For the past four years, she had lived with her daughter in Egg Harbor Township and attended the Atlantic Adult Day Care Center, where she had many friends. She is survived by daughter and granddaughter, Shirley and Katie Shields of Egg Harbor Township; son, Gary Pardue, his wife Sally and grandchildren, Heather, Jared and Ryan of West Chester; sister, Ginette Tritz; nieces, Michelle Collet and Claudine Lahaye, and nephew, Guy Tritz, all of the Alsace-Lorraine, France. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her grandson, Sean Shields. John Corby Peters Sr. KNOXVILLE – John Corby Peters Sr., age 81, born in Bristol Virginia and a longtime resident of Knoxville, passed away July 27, 2004, at Parkwest Hospital. He was a member of Boilermaker Local 453, a previous business agent for the International Machinist Local 480 and a retired TVA machinist. Wayne Joseph Purcell BRISTOL, Va. – Wayne Joseph Purcell, 84, formerly of Lebanon, went home to be with the Lord and His Band of Angels on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, following a short illness. He is now reunited with his wife of 59 years, Ruby Purcell, who preceded him in death on May 10, 2004. Born on March 19, 1920, in Lebanon, Wayne was the son of the late Charles Newton and Lillie Kate (Munsey) Purcell. He retired from Russell Manufacturing, Lebanon, and was a farmer forever in his heart. Wayne served in the U.S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of corporal. He served on various fronts across Europe and Africa and received the following decorations: Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Four Battle Stars, European African and Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, with a Bronze Arrowhead, and a World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the DAV Chapter 40 Bristol Virginia and the Patton Crosswhite VFW Post 7697 Bristol Tennessee. He was a loving daddy, granddad, father-in-law, brother-in-law and great-granddad.
