Arnold Boyd VANSANT, Va. – Arnold Boyd, age 67, passed away July 31, 2004, at Buchanan General Hospital. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Hollie and Gracie Thomas Boyd. He was an active member of Faith in Christ Church and a member of Masonic Lodge 1268, Schertz, Texas. Mr. Boyd was a U.S. Air Force veteran. His 32-year career consisted of 10 years in the U.S. Air Force, from 1954 to 1964. He served in Japan, Philippines and Vietnam. His 22-year civil service career was at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he provided maintenance for the military aircraft. During his career, he received a presidential citation from President Ford and shook hands with Presidents Ford and Johnson and astronaut Gus Grissom. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Oakie Boyd, and two sisters, Frankie and Georgie. Survivors include his ex-wife and best friend, Betty Pearl Shortridge; two sons, Dennis Keith Boyd of Vansant and Jeffrey Wayne Boyd, stationed in Guam with the U.S. Air Force; three brothers, Lonnie and Fonnie Boyd of Vansant and Harold Clyde Boyd of Alexandria, Ohio; five sisters, Bobbie Ratliff of Vansant, Garnie Guy of Gate City, Betty Ball of Rising Sun, Md., Phyllis Carruthers of Pickerington, Ohio, and Marlene Adams of Raleigh, N.C., and two grandchildren, Trevor and Kayla Boyd of Greeley, Kan. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Haysi Funeral Home, with Reverends Roy Lee Wilson, Kyle Ratliff, Lester Boyd, Chris Ratliff and Clyde Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the Hollie Boyd Family Cemetery, Route 1, Vansant, (Little Fox Creek). Military graveside rites will be conducted by John Ratliff American Legion Post 164 of Grundy. Burchell BRISTOL, Tenn. – Martha Augusta Burchell, age 80, of 1100 Virginia Ave., went to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Burchell was born on June 18, 1924, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late John and Elizabeth Ryan Anderson. She had lived most of her life in the Bristol area, worked 24 years for Monroe and attended Virginia Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Burchell was a graduate of Virginia High School Class of 1942. Mrs. Burchell was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Cross Sharrett. Mrs. Burchell is survived by her husband of 62 years, Paul E. Burchell; one special niece, Sharon Gills and husband David; one special great-niece, Brooke Blackburn and husband Nathan, and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Alease Osborne, and a sister, Alma Johnson. She was of the Baptist faith. Hazel was a devoted wife, a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed. Mills COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hubert Theodore Mills, 75, formerly of Abingdon, died on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in OSU East Medical Center in Columbus, after an extended illness. Hubert was born and grew up in Abingdon. He was the son of the late Hubert Mills of Jefferson City, Tenn., and the late Frank and Katie McFarland of Abingdon. He graduated from Kings Mountain Training School and entered the U.S. Air Force, from which he retired as a master sergeant after 20 years. He then settled in Columbus, later being employed by the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired after 20 years. Hubert was a lifetime member of RAFA (Retired Air Force Association). At an early age, Hubert joined Valley Street Baptist Church in Abingdon. In 1975, he became a member of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, where he served the church in various capacities and was a trustee of the church. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Marie (Williams) Mills; three daughters, Connie Daggs of Norfolk, Va., Deborah Jones of Blountville and Audrey Mills of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Sue Downer of Bloomfield, Conn., Francine Ivery of Abingdon and Elaine Jones of Mesa, Ariz.; an aunt, Mrs. Cornelia Patton of Bristol Tennessee; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born on March 28, 1920, in Johnson County, Tenn., to the late John Blevins Rice and Jessie Boone Rice. Mr. Rice was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Marie Baumgardner. Mr. Rice was retired from the Good Luck Beverage Company and was an Army Air Force veteran, having served in the China- Burma Theater during World War II. He was of the Methodist faith. He is survived by his wife, Alberta K. Rice; a son and daughter-in-law, John B. Rice and Brenda S. Mrs. Smith retired from Big Jack Manufacturing Company in 1965. She was a member of the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Toy D. Smith in 1965, four children, Arlie B. Smith, Clyde Allen Smith, Joseph Paul Smith and Francis Lee Cross. She was also preceded in death by many brothers and sisters. William Carl Vance BRISTOL, Tenn. – William Carl Vance, age 94, of 999 Old Jonesboro Road, went to be with his Lord Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., on May 10, 1910, to the late William Thomas Vance and Barbara Adams Vance. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a former employee of old Rutherford Freight Lines and the American Thread Company and retired from Bristol Van Storage in 1975. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II in the South Pacific and Japan conflicts. He attended Antioch Baptist Church and Brookside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Lucille Hensley Vance, and a grandson, Michael Travis Carr. Warren SUGAR GROVE, Va. – Brenda L. Warren, age 61, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 2, 2004, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Her mother, sisters, brothers and many dear and special friends survive her. Brenda requested that there be no funeral service for her. Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon is serving the family of Brenda Warren. Howard D. Whitaker KINGSPORT – Howard D. "Jack" Whitaker, 84, of 291 Boozy Creek Road. Blountville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Bristol Hospice House. He was born in Scott County, Va., (Boozy Creek), and attended Salem United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 12th Armored Division. He was preceded in death by his parents, B.L. Whitaker and Kate Snapp Whitaker, and two sisters, Mildred Hodge and Madge McClain. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Elsie McClain Whitaker of the home; two daughters, Kay Calhoun and husband Glenn of Blountville and Dorothy Baker and husband Paul of Abingdon; three grandchildren, Michelle Towns and husband Bryan, Kingsport, Beverly Haile and husband Nathaniel, Blacksburg, Va., and Paul W. Baker, Kennesaw, Ga.; a great-grandson, Elijah Haile, Blacksburg; a step- granddaughter, Barbara Carroll and husband Gary, Savannah, Ga.; four step-great- grandchildren, Paige Towns, Bristol Virginia, Dixie Mason, Lithia, Fla., Matthew Harvey, Lithia, and Amanda Harvey, Savannah; one step-great-great-granddaughter, Chloe Mason, Lithia; a nephew, Robert Hodge and wife Kathy, Morristown, and a niece, Carla Starnes and husband Norman of Kingsport.
