He was born in Dante, Va., had lived in Castlewood and was a resident of Appalachia for the past 13 years. He had been a surveyor/engineer for the with the Clinchfield Coal Co. for a number of years and he was a mining engineer with Jericol Mining, with 14 years service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was a member of Thee Church in Appalachia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everette M. and Grace (Alderson) Amburgey; and a brother, Gary Fred Amburgey. Surviving are his wife, Wanda Aistrop Amburgey; three daughters, Suzanne King and husband, Brad, of York, S.C., Michelle Fannon and husband, Bill, of Appalachia and Becky Dover and husband, Shane, of Hickory Grove, S.C.; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Dotson and husband, Dudley, of Lebanon, Faye Woods and Carol Hall and husband, Curt, all of Castlewood, and Sue Gibson and husband, Ronnie, of Dante, Va.; one brother, Jerry Amburgey and wife, Rose, of Midland, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Bessie L. Blankenship RAVEN, Va. – Mrs. Bessie L. Blankenship, age 91, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at her home, following a lengthy illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Sally Lou Rakes Boyd. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Blankenship; four sisters, Princess Lester, Pearl Sanders, Marie Robinette and Virgie Boyd Hunt; two brothers, Roy Boyd and Isaac Boyd. She was a member of the Richlands First Christian Church and was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. She is survived by one daughter, Sue Schrarer of Columbia, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Keith Stone and Janet Stone; four great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews; and her faithful canine companion, Spunky, also survive. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School and attended Emory & Henry College and East Tennessee State University. In Alfred’s early years, he had been affiliated with radio broadcast journalism in Richlands, Bristol and Juneau, Alaska. Alfred had pursued agricultural work and was a landlord of leases in Lebanon. He was a lifelong member of Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church. His paternal grandparents, G.H. and Rebecca Browning Dickenson, and maternal grandparents, John and Ada Jessee Tate, also preceded him in death. She had made her home in the Richlands area all of her life, prior to moving to Radford five years ago. She was a member of the First Church of God and attended both the Tazewell and Christiansburg locations. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Frank Webb Sr.; her second husband, Vance Neil Long; one son, Frank Webb Jr.; great-grandson, Colton Frank Webb; and one son-in-law, Bill Cox. Crowe Smith, age 102, formerly of Bristol Virginia, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at The Wexford House. East Lawn Funeral Home is serving the Smith family. William Carl Vance, age 94, of 999 Old Jonesboro Road, went to be with his Lord Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Brenda L. Warren SUGAR GROVE, Va. – Brenda L. Warren, age 61, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 2, 2004, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Her mother, sisters, brothers and many dear and special friends survive her. Brenda requested that there be no funeral service for her. The family would like to thank the Sugar Grove Life Saving Crew, Smyth County Community Hospital’s emergency room doctor and nurses, the nurses and staff on the fourth floor, a special thanks to Dr. Jennifer Jonkers for her special care, support and love and, additionally, thanks to Dr. Sam Vernon and Dr. Wayne Reynolds.
