He was born in Bristol Tennessee to the late Howell Ivan and Beatrice Mae Hartsock Barnes, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was a retired librarian at the Bristol Public Library and was of the Baptist faith. He was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College. He is survived by his special companion, Janice M. Shuttle; great-aunt, Bessie Sproles; several cousins; several special friends; special friend, Marty Shuttle, and aunt, Artense Barnes. Mae Newman Farmer ABINGDON – Mrs. Mae Newman Farmer, age 95, died Sunday at her residence. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. She attended Palestine Baptist Church. James Frank Fields BRISTOL, Tenn. – James (Jim) Frank Fields, age 59, passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Aug. 7, 2004, at his home, after a courageous battle of cancer. Mr. Fields was the son of the late Frank Fields and was preceded in death by his best friend, Cecil Blair. Jim was a loving and devoted son, husband, father and grandfather. After a career of 27 years of over-the-road truck driving, Jim enjoyed traveling and fishing on his "little boat." Throughout his struggle, he always kept his sense of humor. He was a member of Fellowship Chapel. He is survived by his wife, lifelong companion and best friend of 41 years, Marie Fields; one daughter, Lori Sherrill of Gray, Tenn.; two sons, Jamie Fields and his wife Beth of Butler, Tenn., and Eric Fields and his wife Tina of Bluff City; his loving mother, Edna Fields of Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Brenda Harris and her husband Lyle of Bristol Virginia and Delola Larkin and her husband Merril of Bristol Tennessee; one granddaughter, Jessica Newton; six grandsons, Joshua Fields, P.J. Fields, age 89, of the Drill community, passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in a Richlands hospital. Born July 30, 1915, in Skeggs, Va., he was a son of the late John A. and Lottie C. Childress Fields. He had resided in the Drill area most of his life and was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, having joined in December 1936, and had been an elder in the church since 1937. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Leslie Steele Fields, one son, Ronald James Fields, one grandson, Jeffery Lee Fields, three sisters, Geneva Baldwin, Hazel Keen and Virginia Wampler, and one brother, George Fields. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Clarence Hurt Jr. of Honaker, Lottie and Ford Randolph of Abingdon, Barbara Sue and Henry Adams of Hillsville, Va., Evelyn Marie and Wayne Nygaard of Wytheville, Hazel Goad of Roanoke and Virginia Austin of St. Paul, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Ginger Fields of Drill and Robert and Trisha Fields of Drill; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive. Gene Frazier, age 77, of 294 Emmett Road, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Mendota, Va., a son of the late George and JoAnn Ringley Frazier, and had made his home in Bristol most of his life. Mr. Frazier was a retired employee of the City of Bristol, Virginia Public Works Department, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was preceded in death by a son, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Margaret Morris Jones Frazier; two daughters, Debbie Swetech and husband John and Anita Sullivan and husband Tim; one son, Ricky Frazer and wife Brenda; grandson, Tommy Hudler; one great- granddaughter, Melissa Page; three stepdaughters, Shirley Ross, Barbara Bonovitch and Brenda Frazier; nine step-grandchildren; eight step-great- grandchildren; brother, Russell Frazier, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jeanette was born in Cliffield, Va., and was the daughter of the late Larry and Kate Beavers Harrison, both Tazewell County natives. She had lived most of her life in the Baptist Valley area and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Falls Mills Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, her loving husband, Claude Hankins, one sister, Madaline Perry, and one brother, Larry Pete Harrison, preceded her in death. Harris MARION – Junior Charles Harris, age 81, passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Harris was born in Smyth County to the late Charles and Nettie Thomas Harris, and was preceded in death by his wife, Aline Harris. He went to barber school in Richmond and was a barber in Marion for over 45 years. Mr. Harris was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. "Bell" Leonard, age 65, of 7607 Wolf Run Road, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in her home. She was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Jonesborough, Tenn., to Jack H. and Ruth Hopson Peters, and made her home for the past 42 years in the Benhams community. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Gospel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Jack H. Peters, and sister, Kadie Castle. She is survived by her mother, Ruth C. Hopson Peters. She was the loving wife of her husband of 42 years, Gerald T. "G.T." Leonard. She was the loving mother to her children, Don Leonard, Amy Shaffer and husband Barry, Aaron Leonard, Billy Leonard and Barry Leonard. She was the loving grandmother to her granddaughters, Rachel, Annabelle, Abigail and Chloe. Mrs. Love was preceded in death by her mother, Jean Mullins Compton; her maternal grandparents, Francis and Cecile Clay Mullins; her paternal grandparents, W.C. and Rose Sutherland Compton, and several aunts and uncles. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bo and Shannon Love and Jason Love, all of Bristol Virginia; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Kevin McConnell of Kingsport; her father, Lee Compton of Abingdon; grandchildren, Delaney and Callee, and a grandpuppy, Smokey. Mary Montona BRISTOL, Va. – Mary "Jerri" Jereline Whittaker Montona, 61, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, after suffering a brain aneurysm. She was born April 20, 1943, in Benhams, Washington County, Va., and a daughter of the late Rev. Harley Millard Whittaker and Margaret Feathers-Whittaker. She retired from A&P Food Stores in Fairfax County, Va., after over 20 years of service, and returned to Bristol. She owned and operated, with her daughters, the Pet Stop in Bristol Virginia. Jerri enjoyed raising and training hand-fed birds and also enjoyed photography and being surrounded by family and friends. She formerly worked at the Dollar General Store and Photo Express and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Tolbert and her husband Ronnie, and Angela Cosgrove, all of Bristol Virginia; a son, William Millard Whittaker, of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren, Jesse A. Mooney, Victoria N. Mooney, Morgan B. Tolbert and Jacob E. Cosgrove; a sister, Frances N. Hayter of Abingdon; brothers, Lewis Whittaker of Bristol Virginia, Franklin Whittaker of Vancouver and Gene Whittaker of Hillsboro, Ore.; special friends, Bobbie and Wilma McGraw, Sandy Hill, Cal Perry and Kelsie Fletcher; several nieces and nephews and numerous extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by brothers Fred, Jack, William and Millard Whittaker, and three half-sisters, Ruth Leonard, Katherine Booher and Mamie Whittaker. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 o’clock Thursday in the chapel of Oakley-Blevins Funeral Home, with Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Jerald Wayne Plaster RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. – Mr. Jerald Wayne Plaster, age 53, of the Maple Gap community, passed away Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, following an apparent heart attack. Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Harvey P. and Martha E. Shelton Plaster. He was a disabled coal miner. Helen Leona Tate NORTON – Helen Leona Tate, 90, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, from her home. She was a loving mother with love for everyone. Mabel Blanch White PRINCETON, W.Va. – Mabel Blanch White passed into eternal rest early Saturday morning, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Princeton Community Hospital. She was born in Elgood and would have celebrated her 90th birthday on Aug. 25.
