Evans KINGSPORT – James W. Evans, 77, passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was the son of the late Arlington and Alice Evans, and a native of Martinsburg, W.Va. He spent his retirement years in Nashville and Sarasota, Fla., and lived in Kingsport for the past four years. He retired from ITT North Electric. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Dortha Evans, and two sisters. He is survived by four daughters, Marilyn Evans of Zelienople, Pa., Jill Davenport of Kingsport, Deborah Peer of Los Altos, Calif., and Terri Evans of Church Hill; one son, James W. Fields, age 89, of the Drill community, passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in a Richlands hospital. Born July 30, 1915, in Skeggs, Va., he was a son of the late John A. and Lottie C. Childress Fields. He had resided in the Drill area most of his life and was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, having joined in December 1936, and had been an elder in the church since 1937. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Leslie Steele Fields, one son, Ronald James Fields, one grandson, Jeffery Lee Fields, three sisters, Geneva Baldwin, Hazel Keen and Virginia Wampler, and one brother, George Fields. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Clarence Hurt Jr. of Honaker, Lottie and Ford Randolph of Abingdon, Barbara Sue and Henry Adams of Hillsville, Va., Evelyn Marie and Wayne Nygaard of Wytheville, Hazel Goad of Roanoke and Virginia Austin of St. Paul, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Ginger Fields of Drill and Robert and Trisha Fields of Drill; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive. Bundy Architectural Services. He was preceded in death by his father, Mearl Ray Foster. Born Dec. 30, 1947, in Hurley, Va., he was the son of Freda Wolford Rife of Abingdon and the late James Lincoln Rife. He was a graduate of Hurley High School Class of 1965 and a graduate of Pikeville College with a degree in elementary education. He was a former teacher of Hurley Elementary School. He was a successful businessman and was formerly on the Board of Directors of Grundy National Bank. He attended Little Prater Church of Christ. A native of Bristol Virginia, he was the son of the late Roy C. and Mary Elizabeth Burrow Royster. Mr. Royster honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of State Street Methodist Church. As an active supporter of Western Little League, he was a coach and board member. He was an insurance broker for 35 years. Mr. Royster was a caring, loving and generous man and in keeping with this, his wishes were to donate his body for scientific research. Pearl Jackson Whited RICHLANDS – Mrs. Pearl Jackson Whited passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in a Tazewell, Virginia hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) Wingo Lowe. She was of the Holiness faith and, before her illness, attended the Laurel Creek Free Pentecostal Church of God at Bandy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Melvin H. Jackson; her second husband, James C. Whited; two daughters, Jean Whittaker Lockhart and Shirley Whitt Hess; one stepson, Randy Whited; three brothers, Chap Lowe, Kelly Watson and James Lockhart; and two sisters, Jenny Wingo and Myrtle Mosley. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Junior (Dorothy) Keene of Pounding Mill; five stepdaughters, Judy Miller of Swords Creek, Donna Plaster of Richlands, Betty Cole of Bristol, Karene Webb of Richlands and Anita Ray of Castleberry, Fla.; two stepsons, J.P. Whited of Winston-Salem, N.C., and David Whited of Belfast; grandchildren, Linda Lowman and husband Frankie, David Whittaker and wife Joett, Clayton Whittaker and wife Michelle, Cindy Whitt and husband Clyde, Joetta Whalen, Drema Crawford and husband Ray, Charlene Altizer and Annette Sparks and husband Ricky; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great- grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, with Rev. Bobby Laney officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff.
