Kimberly Bowman CONAWAY, Va. – Kimberly Denise Yates Bowman, 38 years of age, passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, from injures sustained in an automobile accident. She was of the Pentecostal faith, a loving daughter, wife and mother. Vance Day, age 93, a resident of Rosedale since 1977, formerly of Harman, Va., went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, while surrounded by her loving family. Carrie was born in Swords Creek, Va., and lived within the area most of her life. She was the daughter of the late William Harley and Victoria Gilbert Vance, both were Swords Creek natives. Carrie was the last surviving member of her family. She was of the Holiness faith and was a loving wife , mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, A.G. Griswold Lee D. Griswold, 83, passed into eternity to his Heavenly home with his Lord, Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Grundy County, Tenn., on Sept. 26, 1920, the second child of Robert Lee and Nora Givens Griswold. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped in the construction of Norris Dam Park. He was a proud veteran of the 23rd Armored Engineer Battalion, the Sixth Armored Division of the U.S. Army, serving World War II as a staff sergeant in the European Theater, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Germany. He was the recipient of the EAMET Service medal, Good Conduct medal and a Bronze Star. He was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service, with over 35 years of faithful service. He was longtime member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men’s Club. He was a 50-year Mason of Bristol’s Shelby Lodge, a member of the Knoxville Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree, a member of Jericho Shine Center and a member of the Roadrunner Club, transporting children in over 300 trips to the Greenville, S.C., Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and 97 trips to the Cincinnati Burn Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Eugene Griswold, and a sister, Georgia Griswold McDonald. Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Fay Kennedy Griswold; daughters, Martha G. Sitgreaves, Bristol Tennessee, and June G. Kilday Sr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Glen William Kilday Sr., 81, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at NHC of Bristol. He was born March 22, 1910, in Afton, Tenn., near Greeneville, and was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anis Kilday of Afton, two brothers and four sisters. Mr. Kilday attended the old Doak High School in Chucky, Tenn., and graduated from Milligan College, where he played football and was a manager for basketball, in 1933. He worked his way through school in the midst of the Depression. He later worked for Bristol Utilities, where he met his wife of 58 years, Margaret Rader Kilday. They were married in 1937. He was a charter member of the "Greatest Generation," giving most of his energy to the goal that his sons would have it better than his generation. He spent his entire career in public service. He taught high school math and coached basketball for a brief time, then served as a "sanitarian" (now called "environmentalist") for the Sullivan County Health Department for about 20 years. He then became superintendent of sanitation for the City of Winston-Salem, N.C., for 24 years, before returning to Bristol after his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army after the outbreak of World War II, from March 1941 till January 1946, working to control yellow fever and malaria in East Africa. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his "exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements, rendered in a clearly exceptional manner." He was honorably discharged as a major in 1946. He was one of the organizing founders of the Bristol Little League Baseball program in 1950, and the first president of the Bristol Pony League Baseball organization in 1951. He earned his master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina in 1950. He was a loyal and active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served for many years as a Sunday School teacher, youth counselor and other offices. He was active in civic activities, including Civitan Club and was a volunteer with Bristol Memorial Hospital and Bristol Regional Medical Center. He helped install scores of lifeline connections. He was honored with the Woodman of the World Outstanding Citizen Award as was his wife, Margaret. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, James Fredrick and Donna Kilday of Bristol Tennessee, and Glen William Jr. and Genie Kilday of Knoxville; grandchildren, Kathy Kilday Gillenwaters of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Doug Kilday of Austin, Texas, Dan Kilday of Bristol, James F. Mrs. Patton was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, where she participated in the Altar Guild for many years, prior to the death of her husband, and was a former member of Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church. She also participated for many years in the Netherland Inn Association activities. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. Tucker Jr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Sanford G. "Tuck" Tucker Jr., age 68, passed away on Aug. 14, 2004, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was the son of the late Sanford and Poolie Viola Brown Tucker, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Mr. Tucker was a former employee of Mason-Dixon Tank Lines and Consolidated Freight and retired from the Teamsters Local 519. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Survivors include wife, Shirley Litton Tucker; son, Mike Tucker and wife Mechele; daughters, Tammy Clark and husband Donnie and Pam Arrowood; special grandsons, Kelby Arrowood and Clark Arrowood; brother, Albert Tucker; sisters, Hazel Tucker Sells, Nellie Tucker Clendenen, Linnie Tucker Odum and husband Tommy and Josie Tucker Carr and husband Bill; several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Jackie Ann Clendenin. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at 7 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tom Kock officiating. Committal services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery. John Davis Wimberly John Davis Wimberly, former mayor and longtime businessman in Kingsport, died at his home Aug. 13, 2004, after an extended illness. He was 94. Born in Hope, Ark., of a pioneer family, he was one of five children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Wimberly. He attended Ouachita College in Arkadelphia, Ark., and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1933, with a B.S. degree in commerce. Mr. Wimberly served as mayor of Kingsport from 1953 to 1955. He was a former president of Price and Ramey Insurance Company, and president and co-owner with his brother of the Hertz Rent-A-Car franchise at Tri-Cities Regional Airport. He served on the Hertz National Advertising Committee for more than 10 years. He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Sigma Nu Fraternity and a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Kingsport. Mr. Wimberly is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years, Margaret Nelms Wimberly, two brothers, two sisters and a nephew. Mr. Wimberly is survived by three daughters, Judy Wimberly Dorminey and Patricia Wimberly Wolfe, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Jane Wimberly Apffel of New Orleans; a brother, Joe W. Wimberly of Kingsport; six grandchildren, John W. Dorminey, Katherine E. Dorminey, Cornelius C. Apffel III, Edward N. Apffel, Andrew W. Tate and Sarah J. Dorminey; four great-grandchildren and one niece, Helen Wimberly Thompson, Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Donna Wright BRISTOL, Tenn. – Donna Wright, age 40, of 1660 Kentucky Avenue Extension, passed away on Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a member of Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include sons, Charles "Chuck" Wright Jr. of Sullivan County, Tenn., and Aaron Wright of Bristol Tennessee; mother, Beulah Godsey of Bristol Virginia; sisters, Barbara Rhymer and husband Lilburn of Bristol Virginia and Diane Godsey of Williamsburg, Va.; brothers, James Godsey of Elizabethton, Tenn., Willie Fleenor of Bristol Tennessee, Kenneth Fleenor and wife Linda of Bristol Virginia, Darrell Fleenor and wife Brenda of Bristol Virginia and Larry Fleenor and wife Judy of Bristol Virginia; special friends, Roger and Carolyn Proulex, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great- great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Irwin Basil Wyatt BRISTOL, Tenn. – Irwin Basil Wyatt, 81, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at NHC Healthcare, Bristol Virginia. Mr. Wyatt was a lifelong resident or Bristol and a son of the late Oscar Floyd and Pearl Tillison Wyatt. He retired after 42 years from Monroe Systems of Business. He co-founded Kingsport Provision Company and was the owner of Wyatt’s Mobile Home Park. Mr. Wyatt was a member of First United Methodist Church, was in his church choir for over 65 years and served as his church treasurer for 20 years. He coached Western Little League baseball for 11 years. Mr. Wyatt served in the U.S. Air Force in Italy during World War II. Mr. Wyatt is survived by his wife, Leona Broyles Wyatt; three daughters, Lynette W. Sisk and husband Conrad of Bluff City, Lauren W. Cooper and husband Jeff of Bristol and Lisa W. Underwood of Knoxville; one son, Basil Wyatt Jr. of Bristol; two grandchildren, Erin L. Underwood and Rachel E. Underwood; one step- granddaughter, April S. Osborne, and one step-great-grandson, Noah Osborne. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 Sunday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow at 8 o’clock. Rev.
