He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and was employed with the Washington County School System for 23 years. He was also a Shriner and a Mason. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Addison, Damascus; a son, Michael Martin Addison, Glade Spring; two daughters, Kelsey Michelle Addison, Glade Spring and Amy Addison Perrigan and husband, Keith, Abingdon; stepchildren, Chase Poore, Bristol Virginia, Chad Poore and wife, Becky, Abingdon and Courtney Perrigan and husband, Steve, Bristol Virginia;, his parents, George Curtis and Marjorie Orr Addison, Abingdon; a sister, Joy Addison Rowe and husband, Bill, Damascus; two grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. Crabtree Jr. CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. – John Henry Crabtree Jr., age 64, passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in a North Carolina hospital, following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands and was the son of the late John Henry Crabtree Sr. and Dorothy Edith Lowe Crabtree. He was of the Pentecostal faith and was a lifetime resident of the Richlands area. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving time in France in the early 1960’s. He was a loving husband, father and a proud new grandfather. He was a welding supervisor for Virginia Metal Products for more than 40 years. John’s walk in life left memorable footprints upon the hearts of all those who knew and loved him. The family wishes to express appreciation to the 2nd floor employees of the Clinch Valley Medical Center for their care and support. Gordon Sr., age 84, of 507 East 10th Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Marion but had lived in Johnson City since 1936. He was the son of the late Pearl Cable Gordon and Lawrence Elliott Gordon. Charles O. Gordon was founder, chairman and CEO of Gordon’s Inc., Tri-City Beverage Corporation, Peace River Citrus Groves, Inc. and the Bydand Corporation. He has served as president of the following organizations: Southern Furniture Manufactures Association, Furniture Library Foundation, Virginia Tech Alumni Foundation, Virginia Tech Student Aid Association, the German Club Alumni Foundation and the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. He served for 35 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Home Financial Corporation. A graduate of Science Hill High School, Johnson City, he received his B. S. degree in industrial engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1942. Gordon served as a glider operations officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theater, with the rank of major. He earned the Presidential Citation, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Airborne Infantry Wings, seven Battle Stars and three Bronze Arrowheads for Airborne invasions. He commanded the first and only glider pilot combat unit serving in World War II. Gordon was a charter member and Past Commander of the Johnson City Power Squadron, charter member and past president of the Lions Club, a past member of the Rotary Club, a Master Mason, a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite and a lifetime member of the Shrine. He is a Knight in the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem. He served as Mayor of Johnson City in 1969. He served as a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board for 50 years and 12 years as chairman. In February 1972, he received the Salvation Army National Award, "Others", and in 1989, he was presented with the distinguished "William Booth Award". In 1983, he was made an honorary life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was named "Man of the Year" by the Board of Governors of the American Furniture Mart in June, 1969, and in November 1978, was honored with the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association’s distinguished "James T. Ryan Award". He served as a director of the Virginia Tech Education Foundation and has completed eight years on the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors and two years as rector. In 1985, he was honored by Virginia Tech in receiving the "Ruffner Medal Award", the highest recognition given by the University. He served as a member of the College of Engineering Committee of 100. The Greater Tri-Cities Business Alliance inducted him into the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame in 2000. Mr. Gordon was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by one son, Jack Curtis Gordon; one brother, Lawrence E. Gordon; and one sister, Marie Harding Ferrari. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Anderson Gordon; five children, Mary Alice Hardin, Johnson City, Charles O. Gordon Jr., High Point, N.C., Lucretia Gordon, Johnson City, Evelyn Sexton Gordon, Greeneville, Tenn., and Robert Preston Gordon, Charlotte, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mathis ABINGDON – Sallie Bell Mathis, age 88, of 600 Walden Road, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mathis was born on June 22, 1916, in Manning, S.C., to the late Johnny and Anna Holladay Weeks. Mrs. Mathis was a homemaker and had lived all her life in the South Carolina area, until moving to Bristol 12 years ago. She was a member of the North Bristol Baptist Church, a former member of the St. Matthews First Baptist Church in South Carolina, and a former resident of Edgemont Towers in Bristol Tennessee. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Mathis, two sisters, Margaret Weeks and Ethel Millender, and two brothers, Shelby Weeks and Dixon Weeks. Daisy F. Miller BUCYRUS, Ohio – Mrs. Daisy F. Miller, age 96, formerly of Swords Creek, Va., passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Altercare Nursing Home in Bucyrus. Born Dec. 13, 1907, in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Estil and Effie Miller. She lived most of her life in Swords Creek as a homemaker and had lived the last six years of her life in Bucyrus with her daughter, Sylvia and her husband, Sam Lane, until her health started to decline. She loved church and singing. She attended Swords Creek Block Church and went to church regularly at the nursing home, where she tried to sing for the residents and staff. Her other hobbies she enjoyed were gardening, crocheting, selling Avon, flea marketing and people. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, Floyd Miller, one daughter, Joan Wingo, one son, Roland Miller, one daughter-in-law, Irene Miller, one son-in-law, Sam Lane, one infant daughter and two infant sons, two brothers, Bert Miller and Bill Miller, and one sister, Banna Strouth. Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Lane of Bucyrus; four sisters, Dulcie Harris of Mt. A lifelong resident of Dickenson County, she was the daughter of Johnny and Tina Mullins Baker, and the widow of Rev. Early Rose. Other than parents and husband, Mrs. Rose was preceded in death by three sons, Darrell, Dempsy and Virgil. Mrs. Rose was a member of Dyers Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, Stratton. Sallie BRISTOL, Tenn. – Ella Mae Guinn Sallie, age 94, of 515 Winston St., went to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in the Wellmont Hospice House. Mrs. Sallie was born on June 8, 1910, in Bluff City, to the late William and Crissie Henson Guinn. She was retired from the Bristol Memorial Hospital and homemaker. Mrs. Sallie was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church. She was the widow of J.C. Sallie and preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Louise Salter; a sister, Gladys Cooper; and a grandson, Gary Turner.
