He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and was employed with the Washington County School System for 23 years. He was a past president of the Shriners and was a Mason. Carrier BRISTOL, Tenn. – Ms. Ruby Davenport Carrier, age 74, went home to be with our Father in Heaven on Aug. 18, 2004. She was a member of the Baptist faith and a member of Norfolk Avenue Baptist Church. Ruby was preceded in death by her father and mother, Claude Davenport and Doris Davenport, two brothers, Carl Davenport and Roy Davenport, two nieces, Kathy Roberts and Melissa Davenport, and one nephew, Bryan Davenport. Ruby was also preceded in death by her best friend, Anna Whittaker. Survivors include her son, Claude Michael Carrier and his wife Becky of Bristol Tennessee; three brothers, Robert Davenport of Glade Spring, Ernest Davenport of Abingdon and Sam Davenport of Kingsport; two sisters, Gay Smithson of Bristol Tennessee and Wanda Warren of Meadowview; several nieces and nephews; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and her beloved dog, Honey. Ruby was blessed by two very special angels, her sister, Wanda and her daughter- in-law, Becky. They were both constant help and support through out her entire illness. She was truly blessed to have them in her life. Clarke BRISTOL, Tenn. – Rowland Joseph Clarke, age 71, 1004 Columbia Road, passed away after a short illness, Wednesday morning, Aug. 18, at Greystone Health Care Center. He was a son of the late Freddie Thompson and Roger W. Clarke. Mr. Clarke was born in Tarboro, N.C., but spent most of his adult life in Tennessee. He was a retired textile weaver. He served in the U.S. Army, having been a Purple Heart recipient, and was wounded in Korea. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Joseph and Roger Lee Clarke, one sister, Myrtle Brown, and one brother, Ronald Clarke. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Janice Conner Clarke; three sisters, Bessie Frost of Gray, Faye Sheppard of Richmond Hills, Ga., and Sarah Manning of Little Washington, N.C., and one brother, Ray Clarke of Germany. Mr. Clarke is also survived by several nieces and nephews and two special nephews, Kenneth Sheppard and Jerry Wayne Conner Jr. He was a member of the Baptist faith and a member of the Bristol American Legion Post. Georgia Compton PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. – Georgia Evelyn Widner Compton, 93, went home to join her loved ones that are waiting for her in Heaven on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004. She began her glorious journey at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center. On April 11, 1911, Georgia was born to the late Perry Alexander and Mary Alice Delozier Widner in the Boyds Creek community. While living in this community, she joined the Boyds Creek Baptist Church and later moved her letter to the Roaring Fork Baptist Church. On Sept. 28, 1930, she married the love of her life, the late Buford Compton, with whom she shared her life for 50 years. Besides her husband and parents, Georgia’s son, Jackie Compton, and sister, Nelle Shields, are waiting for her to join them. Leaving behind to mourn her passing, but celebrating the life that she has lived, are her children, Cleve Compton and wife Mary K. of Marion, Jane Hancock and husband Clayton of Knoxville, Mary Lewis and husband Clell of Sevierville and Faye Parton and Earl Longmire of Knoxville; grandchildren, Lester Compton and wife Judy of Marion, Bill Parton and wife Connie of Lenoir City, Larry Parton and wife Angie of Seymour, Mike Parton and wife Pam of Knoxville, Buford Ogle and wife Peggy of Ocala, Fla., Kim Shelton and husband Randy of Sevierville, Dan Ogle and wife Julie of Cleveland, Tenn., Sandi Pendley and husband Paul of Sterling, Va., and Jeff Lewis and fiancée Kelly of Hampton, Ga.; 19 great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren. Dona Thomas Harris Dona Thomas Harris, 87, completed her journey home Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004. She was born in Pennington Gap, Va., and was raised in St. Charles, Va. Married to John A. Harris in April of 1946, Dona spent 53 years happily married. The latter portion of her married life was spent in Abingdon. She came to live with her daughter Janis in Lutz, Fla., five years ago. He was born in Dante, Va., son of the late Willie and Ida McReynolds Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a retired miner and a member of the UMWA. Robert Vohn Johnson TROUTDALE, Va. – Robert Vohn Johnson, age 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at his home. He was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Isabel Johnson. Kennedy ROANOKE – Glenda Kiser Kennedy, 52, entered into rest on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, as a result of lung disease. As the younger child of Glenn and Trula Kiser, who both preceded her in death, Glenda always lived in Roanoke. She had one daughter, Katharine Anne Kennedy Rucker, with her friend and former husband, Michael O’Neil Kennedy of Salem, Va. Katie married Marc Anthony Rucker, Glenda’s beloved son-in-law, and they together cared for Glenda during her illness. Also surviving are one sister, Myrna Kiser Hicks of Roanoke; one niece, Renita Pischke and husband Alan of Roanoke; two nephews, Ricky L. Hicks and wife, Barbara of Vinton and their children, Krystale and Kevin, and Ronny L. Hicks and wife Barbie of Vinton and their children, Tyler and Jennifer; 15 aunts; four uncles and a special friend, Mary "Flute" Kingery Shelton and her husband, Nick of Roanoke. Glenda graduated from William Fleming High School in 1970, and attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and Virginia Western Community College. After caring for her father in his final years, she then attended the College of Health Sciences, receiving a CNA certification and caring for many people. Her final service was in the Order of the Daughters of the King, the Shepherdesses of St. James Chapter. Russell, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004. After her courageous battle with cancer, our Lord Jesus Christ called his servant, Shirley N. Russell, home. Although Shirley’s remaining time was spent with her family in Norfolk, her heart was always in Marion with her friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline H. She was employed at City Drug Store in Marion and Harwood Manufacturing. Survivors include: three sons, Johnny Hobert Warren and wife Faye, Galax, Sam Ray Russell, Marion, and Danny Patton Russell and wife Sharon, Marion; one daughter, Judy Carolyn Powers and husband J.C., Chilhowie; one brother, Dillon Warren, Independence; two sisters, Wilma Butler, Baltimore, and Bernice Owens, Marion; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
