Brown Jr. RICHLANDS – Mr. George William Brown Jr., age 69, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in a Durham, N.C., hospital following a brief illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of Carrie Mae Brown of Richlands and the late George W. Brown. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. George retired from the Town of Richlands, where he was superintendent of the street department with 46 years of dedicated service. He was serving his second term on the Richlands Town Council. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Glenna Sue Cox, and one sister, Janice Brown. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Elizabeth (Darby) Harris Brown; three sons, Mike Brown and wife Rhonda of Paintlick, Va., Robert (Bob) Brown and wife Kathy of Wardell, Va., and Richard Brown and wife Teri of Richlands; one sister, Mrs. Walter (Ella Ruth) Puckett of Paintlick; one brother, Danny F. Brown of Cedar Bluff; mother-in-law, Clara V. Harris of Richlands; six grandchildren, Kimberly Jackson, John Cox, Katie Brown, Hunter Brown, Landon Brown and Spencer Brown; two great-grandchildren, Lindsey Cox and Ethan Cox, and many close friends also survive. Clarke BRISTOL, Tenn. – Rowland Joseph Clarke, age 71, 1004 Columbia Road, passed away after a short illness, Wednesday morning, Aug. 18, at Greystone Health Care Center. He was a son of the late Freddie Thompson and Roger W. Clarke. Mr. Clarke was born in Tarboro, N.C., but spent most of his adult life in Tennessee. He was a retired textile weaver. He served in the U.S. Army, having been a Purple Heart recipient, and was wounded in Korea. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Joseph and Roger Lee Clarke, one sister, Myrtle Brown, and one brother, Ronald Clarke. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Janice Conner Clarke; three sisters, Bessie Frost of Gray, Faye Sheppard of Richmond Hills, Ga., and Sarah Manning of Little Washington, N.C., and one brother, Ray Clarke of Germany. Mr. Clarke is also survived by several nieces and nephews and two special nephews, Kenneth Sheppard and Jerry Wayne Conner Jr. He was a member of the Baptist faith and a member of the Bristol American Legion Post. Donald Harding Sr. WISE – Donald Earl Harding Sr., 71, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at the Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport. He was the founder of the Harding Family Singers, a minister for several years, a retired coal miner and former employee of Elkins Coal Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew J. and Rebecca Jane Potter Harding; two daughters, Joyce Harding and Gwendolin Harding; five brothers, Cecil, Andrew, Ray W. Sr., Leton Sr. and Arved Sr., and a sister, Virgie B. Williams. She was born in Pennington Gap, Va., and was raised in St. Charles, Va. Married to John A. Harris in April of 1946, Dona spent 53 years happily married. The latter portion of her married life was spent in Abingdon. She came to live with her daughter Janis in Lutz, Fla., five years ago. Dona is survived by her daughters, Janis (Bob) Graham and Patricia Ann (Tommy) Corbett of Cartersville, Ga, and grandchildren, Kaitlin, Elaina, Leigh Ann and Bill. Mrs. Mee had lived in several areas, including Ohio and Crescent City, Calif., where she earned a nursing degree; Athens, Greece, where she married her second husband, Lester Meade, and then relocated with him to Kenya, where they lived for three years; Ocala, Fla., and most recently, Abingdon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Widener; her husbands, Clayton Surber and Lester Meade; sister, Shirley Ann Widener, and brother, Herman Widener. Survivors include her daughters, Gloria Delp, Barbara Authenreth, and Linda Hicklin; son, Charles Curtis (Sam) Surber; brother, Gordon Widener; sisters, Betty Deel, Violet Rossi, Edna Delp and Minnie Cullop; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mitchell BELFAST, Va. – Mr. Reese Bland Mitchell, age 68, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late Noah Matthew and Pearl Grace Hagerman Mitchell. He was a former self-employed contractor. He attended the Smith Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church. Reese enjoyed singing and listening to bluegrass gospel music. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Hubbard, Auldie, Denny, Everett and Noah Matthew Jr. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mrs. Janice Addison Mitchell; three daughters, Darlene McCullough and husband Ben of Pennsboro, W.Va., Kim Ashby and husband Jamie of Belfast and Marissa Bostic and husband Aaron of Swords Creek; two grandchildren, Jordon and Kyla Ashby; four sisters, Naomi Lusak of North Olmstead, Ohio, Mildred Cruze of Cleveland, Ohio, Sara Vandyke of Jewell Ridge and Reda Mitchell of Belfast; three brothers, Wilkie Mitchell and Laymon Mitchell, both of Jewell Ridge, and Albert Mitchell of Richlands, and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was a native of Joplin, Mo., and daughter of the late Eurl Wade Taylor and Pearl Clarke Taylor. She was an executive secretary and a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church. He was a retired employee of the N & W Railroad, a member of the Williams Burchfield Masonic Lodge 294 A.F. & A.M. for 53 years, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith. Her family moved to Bristol in 1900 and she was born to the late Oliver Harold and Mary Sue Criner Hunigan. She worked in an ammunition plant for the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member of Central Baptist Church, and was the widow of Lenwood Walker. She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
