She was born April 11, 1917, in Wallace, Va., a daughter of the late Emmett C. and Mary Elizabeth Arnett Ashley, and was the widow of J.R. Allison. She was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and Virginia Intermont College. Mary was a member of State Street United Methodist Church, the director of the State Street United Methodist Church kindergarten and the executive secretary to the Honorable Wingate Lucas. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She is survived by her two daughters, Betty Allison Collins and her husband Harry of Knoxville and Mary J. Freed of Virginia Beach, Va.; a grandson, Jacob Wells Freed of Virginia Beach; a sister, Katherine Rupp of Santa Anna, Calif.; three half-brothers, Joe Ashley of Cherry Hill, N.J., James Ashley of Knoxville and David Ashley of Chattanooga. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Vendetta Ashley, and a brother, Paul Ashley. James Scott Bellamy ABINGDON – Mr. James Scott "Smokey" Bellamy, age 78, went home to be with the Lord, Aug. 20, 2004, at his home. He was born on Nov. 28, 1925, in Washington County, to the late Lilburn Bellamy and Lula Wolfe Bellamy. Two brothers, Odell Bellamy and Dennis Bellamy, two sisters, Elizabeth Lewis and Nancy Jones, and a grandson, David Bellamy, also preceded Scott in death. Scott was a former employee of Mid-Mountain Foods and was of the Pentecostal faith. Quillen VA Nursing Home. A native of Erwin, he was the son of the late Grady and Nellie Carver Tipton Briggs. Mr. Briggs honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He retired from the Army on April 30, 1985. He enjoyed working with computers. "Ike" Crabtree, founder of Crabtree Buick-Pontiac in Bristol Virginia, died Friday at the DeBakey Heart Center at Methodist Hospital. The Honaker, Va., native was a past member of the board of directors of Virginia National Bank and a member of the Emory & Henry College board of visitors. He was a son of the late Otis and Maude McGlothlin Crabtree. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Quarles and Blanche Wallace, and a brother, Russell Crabtree. Kilday Sr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Glen William Kilday Sr., 94, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at NHC of Bristol. He was born March 22, 1910, in Afton, Tenn., near Greeneville, and was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anis Kilday of Afton, two brothers and four sisters. Mr. Kilday attended the old Doak High School in Chucky, Tenn. He graduated from Milligan College in 1933, where he played football and was a manager for basketball. He worked his way through school in the midst of the Depression. He later worked for Bristol Utilities, where he met his wife of 58 years, Margaret Rader Kilday. They were married in 1937. He was a charter member of the "Greatest Generation," giving most of his energy to the goal that his sons would have it better than his generation. He spent his entire career in public service. He taught high school math and coached basketball for a brief time, then served as a "sanitarian" (now called "environmentalist") for the Sullivan County Health Department for about 20 years. He then became superintendent of sanitation for the City of Winston- Salem, N.C., for 24 years, before returning to Bristol after his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army after the outbreak of World War II, from March 1941 till January 1946, working to control yellow fever and malaria in East Africa. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his "exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements, rendered in a clearly exceptional manner." He was honorably discharged as a major in 1946. He was one of the organizing founders of the Bristol Little League baseball program in 1950, and the first president of the Bristol Pony League baseball organization in 1951. He earned his master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina in 1950. He was a loyal and active member of First United Methodist Church, where he served for many years as a Sunday School teacher, youth counselor and other offices. He was active in civic activities, including Civitan Club and was a volunteer with Bristol Memorial Hospital and Bristol Regional Medical Center. He helped install scores of Lifeline connections. He was honored with the Woodman of the World Outstanding Citizen Award, as was his wife, Margaret. Mr. Kilday was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his parents, James and Anis Kilday of Afton, two brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, James Fredrick and Donna Kilday of Bristol Tennessee and Glen William Jr. and Genie Kilday of Knoxville; grandchildren, Kathy Kilday Gillenwaters of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Doug Kilday of Austin, Texas, Dan Kilday of Bristol, James F. James Raleigh Kiser LEBANON – James (Jim) Raleigh Kiser, 69, passed away on Friday, Aug. 20, 2004. Born in Russell County, Va., on Jan. 2, 1935, he was the son of the late Ritzy Boise and Claris Kiser. Mr. Kiser worked at Russell Manufacturing in Lebanon for 27 years and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, four brothers, Lee Roy Kiser, Harlan Kiser, June Kiser and Freddie Kiser, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Virginia Kiser; son and daughter- in-law, Scott and Joie Parrott; grandchildren, Carrie and Russell Parrott, all of Bristol Virginia; brother, Paul Kiser of Hobart, Ind.; sister, Lillian Holbrook of Castlewood, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Lera Beth Robinson KINSTON, N.C. – Lera Beth Menefee Robinson, age 88, formerly of Marion, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Lenoir Memorial Hospital, Kinston. Born on Feb. 25, 1916, in Rocky Mount, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Crump and Lucy Rosser Menefee. She was a 1936 graduate of Emory & Henry College, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Phi sorority. On Oct. 10, 1936, she married William Marcellus "Cel" Robinson and together they owned and operated Robinson’s Sporting Goods on the corner of Broad and Main for over 20 years, retiring in 1969. Lera Beth was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, having served as a Sunday School teacher, board member, a member of United Methodist Women, represented her church on the Weekday Religious Education Committee and was a charter member of the Marion Chapter of the Church Women United. She was a lifetime member of the Smyth County Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, with 25 years of service, having served as secretary, treasurer, vice president and president, and was honored in the fall of 2003 for having 10,000 hours of service. She was also a longtime member of the Stitch and Snitch Sewing Group. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cel, in 1973. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Sidney Crump and Ann Newman Robinson of Kinston; two granddaughters, Adrianne Marcella Robinson of Raleigh, N.C., and Marissa Robinson Hall and husband Chad of Greensboro, N.C.; two great- granddaughters, Addyson Hall and Sydney Hall, and one sister, Mrs. Leslie (Nancy) Gibbs of Richmond. Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Lambert and the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the parlor of the church. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.
