Mr. James Scott "Smokey" Bellamy, age 78, went home to be with the Lord, Aug. 20, 2004, at his home. The Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main St., Abingdon, is serving the family of Mr. James Scott "Smokey" Bellamy. Ferrell W. Boyd Ferrell W. Boyd, 77, formerly of Bristol, died Aug. 22, 2004, in Jupiter, Fla., following a lengthy illness. Mr. Boyd spent his youth in Bristol, graduated from Tennessee High School in 1944 and Virginia Military Institute in 1948. He held a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from VMI. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, where he served as an anti-tank gunner from 1945-1947. Mr. Boyd relocated to Tampa, Fla., in 1978 and retired to Jupiter in 1995. Known to his friends in Bristol as Bub or Spec, he was active for many years in the Bristol Country Club as a member and tournament director. He was also a member of the Bristol Elks Club, the Hacklerwood Post 145 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bristol as a child and later was a member of the Emmanual Episcopal Church of Bristol. He was one of the founding members of the Cedar Valley Club. Mr. Boyd was the son of E.F. and Mattie Davis Boyd, founders of Quality Ice Cream and Bristol Supply and Equipment Company. Mr. Boyd was a partner in Bristol Supply and Equipment and later owned Boyd Consulting and Old Hickory Bar-B-Q, the latter in partnership with his lifelong friend, Paul "Jake" Morrell. Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Koether Boyd, sister, Bettye Boyd Templeton, and brother, John W. Boyd. He is survived by a daughter, Cindy Boyd of Orlando, Fla.; three sons, F.W. "Woody" Boyd Jr. of Elizabethton, Tenn., Bryan K. Boyd of Bristol and Bruce R. Boyd of Jupiter; a granddaughter, Lindsey Boyd; eight grandsons, Daniel Boyd of Tampa, F.W. "Chip" Boyd III of Bristol, Sam Boyd of Elizabethton, Christopher Boyd and Alex Boyd of Bristol and Brandon, Blake and Brent Boyd of Jupiter; a brother-in-law, James D. Templeton of Columbia, S.C.; aunts, Eliza Ireson of Roanoke and Nancy Taylor of Chapel Hill, N.C., and special friends, Paul and Phyllis Morrell of Bristol Tennessee. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Honaker Funeral Home, Honaker, Va. James Elbert Dutton ABINGDON – James Elbert "Hiball" Dutton, 83, passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 2004. A lifelong resident of Washington County, he was a member of East Bristol Church of Christ, where he was a past elder. Mr. Dutton was an Army veteran, serving during World War II and was the recipient of the Silver and Bronze Stars. He had worked at Gray’s Hosiery Mill and Raytheon, and was past president of Industrial Management Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Dutton; grandson, David; and brother, Ralph. Woodrow Flanary JOHNSON CITY – Dr. Woodrow Flanary, age 90, 2018 Sherwood Dr., Apartment 228, died after an extended illness, Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Northside Hospital. He was a native of Jonesville, Va., and was the son of the late William Harvey and Willie Rebecca Flanary of Jonesville. Dr. Flanary was a 1933 graduate of Jonesville High School and received his A.B. degree from Emory & Henry College in 1937, his M.A. degree in English from Vanderbilt University in 1939, and doctor of education degree from the University of Virginia in 1953. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the 98th Infantry in 1943-44 and as a staff member in the G-2 (intelligence) Division of the POE Headquarters at Fort Shafter in Honolulu, where he was an aerial photo interpreter and cartographer in 1944-46. He had a long and distinguished career as a college professor for 40 years. He taught English at Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1939-40, English, French, math and geography at Emory & Henry College from 1940-1950, except for three years out, (43-46), when he was in the Army. From 1950-1953, he pursued his course work for the doctor of education degree, while teaching graduate courses in diagnostic and remedial techniques in reading. Upon receiving his EdD degree in 1953, he taught in the College of Education at East Carolina College, 1953-1957, East Tennessee State College 1957-1962, Northeast Louisiana State College 1962-1967, where he was director of the Reading Laboratory for College Students, and at Memphis State University 1967 until his retirement in 1979. At Memphis State, he became the director of testing for the Nuclear Studies Program, when in 1974 Memphis State was selected by the Southern Governors’ Conference to be the Center for training nuclear power operators. Upon retirement, he was granted the status of associate professor emeritus. He is a member of several learned societies. After retirement, he moved back to Johnson City. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Dr. Flanary was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lee Boy Flanary; his son, Dr. James Stephen Flanary; his second wife, Florence Arnold Flanary; three sisters, Jeanette Flanary Price, Anna Mae Flanary and Ollie Bell Flanary Jones. He is survived by one sister, Edith Hopkins, Surprize, Ariz.; one brother-in- law, Claude C. Jones, Jonesville, Va.; his daughter-in-law, Debra Lynn Flanary, Memphis; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marler Frank, Atlanta and Natalie Elise Marler, Nashville; one stepson, Roy Arnold, Flint, Mich.; three nieces, Rothella Flenor, Noblesville, Ind., Peggy Bush, Jonesville and Linda Cheryl Suffel, Surprize; three nephews, William "Billy" Adkins, Jonesville, Norman A. He was the son of the late Earl Hubert Sr. and Belle Beard Hicks. Mr. Hicks was a member of Edgefield Methodist Church and a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 538 Union for over 50 years. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Jane Miller Hicks, in 2003. Ruby Butts Johnston PEARISBURG, Va. – Ruby Ellen Butts Johnston, 81, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Johnston was born on July 3, 1923, in Eggleston, Va., and was a daughter of the late Luther Haynes and Mary Louise Croy Butts. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie Buchanan, Louise Oberlin and Jullete Butts; and three brothers, Buford, James and Wilmont Butts. Mrs. Johnston was a retired librarian from the Pearisburg Public Library, a member of the Virginia State Library Association and was instrumental in starting the first adult literacy program in Giles County, now the Literacy Volunteers of America – New River Valley. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women and a life member of the Tazewell District Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was a member of the Giles County Historical Society, a member of the Pearisburg Woman’s Club, a member of McComas Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, Past Regent of George Pearis Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and Past Regent of Major George Parker Chapter Daughters of the American Colonies, Roanoke. She is survived by her husband of over 63 years, Edward Lee Johnston of Pearisburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and June Marie Johnston of Lebanon, Va., and Mike and Carole Johnston of Pearisburg; a sister, Nancy B. He was born in Bandy and was a son of the late William Baylor and Grace Vernon Sargent, both Tazewell County natives. He made his home in the Bandy area most of his life, was a World War II Merchant Marine and attended the Bandy Freewill Baptist Church. While living in Salisbury the past two years, he attended the Wyatt Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer in the Bandy area, a retired miner with U.P. White Coal Company and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union 6025 of Bishop, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tanya Sargent, two sisters, and one brother. Survivors are two sons, Mr. Roger "R.L." Sargent and wife, Sue of Whittwell, Tenn., and Mr. Jim Sargent and wife, Nancy of Salisbury; three sisters, Mrs. Beulah Sparks of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Essie Faye Vrooman of Marion, Ohio, and Miss Eloise Sargent of Bandy; and two brothers, Mr. Ernest B.
