She was born in Rockland, Idaho, to the late William Martin and Ella Elizabeth (Pilkington) Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Allen; a son, Robert Neal Allen; a daughter, Lollene, who died in infancy; a sister, Lola Presnell; and a brother, Wayne and a sister, Ruby, both dying in infancy. Music was an important part of her life. She was a proficient pianist, organist and choir director, serving in these capacities as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Survivors include: two sons, Gary Wayne Allen, Citrus Heights, Calif., and J. Howard Burton, Marion; one sister, Donna Pearl Carver, Ogden, Utah; one brother, Joseph Ray Allen, Ogden; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great- grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Thursday in the Mount Vernon Memorial Park, Fair Oaks, Calif. Boyd, 77, formerly of Bristol, died Aug. 22, 2004, in Jupiter, Fla., following a lengthy illness. Mr. Boyd spent his youth in Bristol, graduated from Tennessee High School in 1944 and Virginia Military Institute in 1948. He held a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from VMI. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, where he served as an anti-tank gunner from 1945-1947. Mr. Boyd relocated to Tampa, Fla., in 1978 and retired to Jupiter in 1995. Known to his friends in Bristol as Bub or Spec, he was active for many years in the Bristol Country Club as a member and tournament director. He was also a member of the Bristol Elks Club, the Hacklerwood Post 145 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bristol as a child and later was a member of the Emmanual Episcopal Church of Bristol. He was one of the founding members of the Cedar Valley Club. Mr. Boyd was the son of E.F. and Mattie Davis Boyd, founders of Quality Ice Cream and Bristol Supply and Equipment Company. Mr. Boyd was a partner in Bristol Supply and Equipment and later owned Boyd Consulting and Old Hickory Bar-B-Q, the latter in partnership with his lifelong friend, Paul "Jake" Morrell. Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Koether Boyd, sister, Bettye Boyd Templeton, and brother, John W. Boyd. He is survived by a daughter, Cindy Boyd of Orlando, Fla.; three sons, F.W. "Woody" Boyd Jr. of Elizabethton, Tenn., Bryan K. Boyd of Bristol and Bruce R. Boyd of Jupiter; a granddaughter, Lindsey Boyd; eight grandsons, Daniel Boyd of Tampa, F.W. "Chip" Boyd III of Bristol, Sam Boyd of Elizabethton, Christopher Boyd and Alex Boyd of Bristol and Brandon, Blake and Brent Boyd of Jupiter; a brother-in-law, James D. Templeton of Columbia, S.C.; aunts, Eliza Ireson of Roanoke and Nancy Taylor of Chapel Hill, N.C., and special friends, Paul and Phyllis Morrell of Bristol Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 Wednesday evening, Aug. 25, 2004, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 8 o’clock, with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating. The committal service will be at 11 o’clock Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in Glenwood Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Church Honor Color Guard. Annisteen Burchett HAYSI – Annisteen "Bug" Burchett, age 76, passed away Aug. 23, 2004, at Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood. Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Scotch and Ethel Hay Willis. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Holliff Burchett, an infant son, two brothers, Omel and Donald Willis, and five sisters, Trella Boyd, Betty Jo Garrett, Zephyr Willis, Verna Mae Ratliff and Katie Joyce Willis. Survivors include four sisters, Joy Anderson of Palatka, Fla., Mary Lindsey of Florence, Ala., and Samma Lee Oquinn and Alice Gail Ratliff, both of Vansant; one brother, Neville Willis of Hazel Park, Mich,; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Haysi Funeral Home, with Rev. Danny Sluss officiating. Burial will follow in the Willis Cemetery, Haysi. Carl R. "Ray" Charles, 69, passed away Friday, Aug. 20, at Marshall Medical Center South in Boaz, Ala., after an extended illness. Capt. Charles had an extensive career in aviation, which began in 1952 with the US Air Force. He served four years active duty and earned a National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He earned a philosophy of aviation control degree from Burnside-Ott Aviation International. He subsequently earned a flight instructor multi-engine/APT rating, was a designated FAA flight examiner within the Birmingham district office, and was a fixed base operator in Savannah, Tenn., and Muscle Shoals, Ala. He was director of aviation with Worrell Newspapers Group, Charlottesville, Va., until his retirement in 1987. Under his leadership and direction Worrell Newspapers experienced no flight accidents or incidents. He is survived by his spouse, Phyllis Charles of Ironton, Ohio; four children, David Charles of Tennessee, Tanya Wilson of North Carolina, Dennis Charles of Albertville, Ala., and Steven Charles of Guntersville, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; four brothers, William Charles of Killen, Ala., Shelton O. Charles of Dallas, Jack Charles of Kingsville, Texas, and Don Charles of Lindsey, Calif.; and two sisters, Gladys Usrey of Boerne, Texas, and Sally Carpman of Irving, Texas. Arthur Earl Cook CROOKSVILLE, Ohio – Mr. Arthur Earl Cook, age 82, formerly of Rowe and Venia, Va., passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in a Zanesville, Ohio, nursing facility. Born Sept. 28, 1921, in Skeggs, Va., he was a son of the late Isaac Newton and Elizabeth Ann Street Cook. He had lived in Crooksville for the past 11 years, but had spent most of his life in Buchanan County. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a retired radio and television repairman, a former school bus driver and a former employee of the Buchanan County School System. He attended the Free Christian Church on Big A Mountain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Lester Cook, and his second wife, Julia Harris Cook. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Eva Vaydon and James Sowders of Knoxville, Tenn.; one son, Vernon Cook and Pamela Denton of Crooksville; one sister, Snoda Addison of Page, Va.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Stevens and Angela Cook Estes; and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Paul McNalley and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.
