Compton GRUNDY – Dewey Bascome Compton, 89 years of age, of the Slate Creek area, passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. Mr. Compton lost his battle with cancer due to complications and has gracefully earned his fare home to be with family and friends that have made their journey first. He was a native of Grundy and lived on Slate Creek for the past 30 years. He retired from the coal mines and was extremely instrumental on the subject of mining labor laws for the health and safety of all future mine employees. He was an honored war veteran and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in the European Theater and receiving the Purple Heart. Introduction to combat early in his life made him realize that freedom is not free. He was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Corp. VP No. 2 and No. 5, a member and served as president of United Mine Workers of America Local 1568. Mr. Compton was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Hurley, three sisters, Flora, Virginia and Margie Compton, five brothers, Morgan, Glen, Richard, Noah and John Compton. Emma Matilee Elam KINGSPORT – Emma Matilee Elam, 91, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at her residence, after an extended illness. She was born in Russell County, Va. Mrs. Elam had lived in Kingsport most of her life. She was an active member of the Vermont United Methodist Church. She dearly loved her church and church family and served in many leadership roles. She was coordinator of children’s department, Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher and active in Women’s Society for Christian Services. She was also active in the Cedar Grove Elementary School in PTA for many years and was also a substitute teacher for the Sullivan County School System. She was a loving and devoted mother of her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Her heart and door was always open to anyone in need. She loved the Lord Jesus and shared that love with everyone, always seeing the good in everything around her. She faced death as she faced life with grace, mercy and dignity. Truly a wonderful example of the love of Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Roscoe Elam, her parents, Sherman Francis Isaacs and Carrie Ellen Salyers Isaacs, a grandson, Terry Bowyer, four sisters, two brothers and a special friend and neighbor, Charlotte Grogg. Carolyn Looney NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. – Carolyn L. Greenleaf Looney, 59 years of age, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at Tazewell Community Hospital, following an extended illness. Born in Pike County, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Preacher Clarence and Louise Greenleaf. She was a resident of Buchanan County several years prior to moving to North Tazewell, and was a lifetime member of Grundy Church of Christ. At the present time, she was a member of Honaker Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Mountain Mission School and a loving mother and homemaker. Mrs. Looney is survived by her husband, Donald G. Looney, North Tazewell; one daughter, Christelle and husband, Ronnie Bostic, North Tazewell; two sons, Donald and wife, Renae Looney, Hickory, N.C., and Shannon and wife, Corrie Looney, Cedar Bluff; one sister, Leona Shortridge, Grundy; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was born in Dickenson County on Dec. 24, 1909, and later became a member of the Primitive Baptist faith. Her parents were the late Henry and Alta O’Quinn of Dickenson and Buchanan Counties. Her husband of 76 years was the late Walter O’Quinn, (Pawpaw), who passed away in 1978. Our mother was also preceded in death by two sons, Aubrey O’Quinn and Ola K. O’Quinn; a granddaughter, Wanda Sue O’Quinn; a great-grandson, Hunter Timothy Howard; a son-in-law, Andrew Lambert; a daughter-in-law, Lola O’Quinn; five sisters, Virgie Farmer, Bessie Boyd, Minnie Powers, Ona Owens and Ruby Owens; three brothers, Jessie O’Quinn, Ola O’Quinn, and Burton O’Quinn. Hazel Steele CEDAR BLUFF – Mrs. Hazel "Granny" Steele, age 94, of the Edgewater Drive section, went to be with the Lord, Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at her home. She was born in Saltville and was a daughter of the late Samuel George and Annie Chapman Poore, both Saltville natives. She was a lifelong resident of the Cedar Bluff area, a member of the Cedar Bluff Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member in the Women of the Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, whose life touched many. She was a special God-sent Granny to a host of others, young and old alike. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Roscoe Steele, son, Harve Benton Steele, son-in-law, Joseph Robertson, one sister and five brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main St., Abingdon, is serving the Turley family. Robert Vandervort Sr. MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Robert Wade Vandervort Sr., 74, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004. A native of Bristol Tennessee, he was the son of the late Carleton and Josephine Wade Vandervort, and was preceded in death by a brother, Carleton Vandervort Jr. Mr. Vandervort was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church and retired from Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department. He graduated from MTSU in 1974, and was an employee of Vandervort Concrete. Mr. Vandervort was retired from the U.S. Air Force, after serving 21 years during the Berlin Airlift 1948, 1949, Korean conflict and Vietnam War, retiring as senior master sergeant. Surviving are his wife, Martha Hudson Vandervort; sons, Robert (Lydia) Vandervort Jr. of Knoxville, Jim (Carol) Vandervort of Vernon, Ala., Eric Vandervort of Smyrna, Scott Vandervort of La Vergne and John (Dorothy) Vandervort of Readyville; daughters, Ruth Carol (Tim) Hawkins of Murfreesboro and Susan (Lyle) Lynch of Murfreesboro; brothers, Tom Vandervort of Murfreesboro and David Vandervort of Lausanne, Switzerland; 17 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Pete Wynn LEON, W.Va. – Pete Wynn, age 90, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at the Arbors of Gallipolis Rehabilitation Center, Gallipolis, Ohio. Born in Harlin County, Ky., June 29, 1914, the son of Jim and Jennie Stuart Wynn, he was a retired miner with the United Mine Workers Local 2274. He was of the Baptist faith and an avid gardener. Living in Clintwood for many years, until the past four years, he lived with Harold and Gladys Thomas in Leon. He was preceded in death by his parents, along with his wife, Wilma Wynn, and later, Naomi Baker Wynn, a son, Charles B. Wynn, and daughter, Barbara J. Norris. Survivors include his sons, Jim (Pam) Wynn, Columbus, Ohio, and Jerry (Abbie) Wynn, Isom, Ky.; daughters, Dorothy Amburgey, Columbus, Thelma Sue (Denver) Peters, Darbyville, Ohio, and Gladys (Harold) Thomas, Leon; daughter-in-law, Herta Wynn, Appomattox, Va., and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Pete Wynn will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel, with Ministers Leonard Gabbart and Johnny Haymon officiating. Burial will follow at the Colley Cemetery, Route 3, Clintwood. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Sunday evening at the Clintwood Funeral Home. Clintwood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
