Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Edgar Elwood Artrip ARTRIP, Va. – Edgar (Bud) Elwood Artrip, 76, passed away at his home on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004. Born in Artrip on Jan. 7, 1928, he was the son of the late James Harvey and Bessie Amos Artrip. A lifelong resident of Russell County and a farmer and livestock trader, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, was an avid outdoorsman and was of the Baptist faith. Along with his parents, three infant brothers and his brother, Robert Kyle Artrip, also precede him in death. Survivors include his brothers, Arnold (Mus) Leamon Atrip and Raymond (Hap) E. Artrip, both of Artrip; sisters, Cynthia Kay Anderson and husband Homer of Lebanon, Inez Geraldine Brown and husband Norman of Virginia Beach, Va., and Cecil Iris Elkins and husband Aldon of Coeburn; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive. Pallbearers will be Peter Hicks, Johnny Paul Fife, Mike Vance, Gary Fife, Ronald Artrip, Bradley Amos, Johnny Owens, P.J. Hicks and Greg Vance. Honorary pallbearers will be uncles and nephews. Maxfield, age 82, 469 Springdale Dr., went to be with the Lord Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Lee County, Va., a son of the late John L. and Maggie Phillips Maxfield, and was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Maxfield. Mr. Maxfield grew up in Big Stone Gap, and had made his home in the Bristol area for over 50 years. He was a retired employee of Cortrim Hardwood Parts Co. and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mina Maxfield; one son, Johnny Maxfield; four grandchildren, Melissa Diffenderfer and husband Greg, Todd Maxfield and wife Cheryl, Erica Collins and husband Chris and Jesse Maxfield; five great- grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Hall and Helen Jones; two brothers, J.C. Kyle Noe Jr. LEBANON – Kyle (Cecil) Noe Jr., 83, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in the Russell County Medical Center, following an extended illness. Born March 7, 1921, in Russell County, a son of the late Kyle and Ella Holbrook Noe, he was a lifelong resident of Russell County. He was a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company, retiring in 1983. He attended the Lebanon Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Kiser Noe, a brother, L.C. (Lefty) Noe, a sister, Lucille Noe Byington, and an infant sister. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and was a school bus driver for the Washington County, Va., school system. She was a member of Fleenor Memorial Church and also worked with the City of Bristol at Douglas Senior Citizen Center, where she taught ceramics. Survivors include companion of 16 years, Bobby J. Claryce Barr Rogers JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Mrs. Claryce Barr Rogers, 76, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at North Side Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Rogers was born in Greene County, Tenn., and a daughter of the late George Peter and Bessie Jane Steele Barr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Rogers, in 2002, three brothers, Lonnie "Boss" Barr, Robie Barr and Oscar Joe Barr, and three sisters, Ruby Dugger, Edna Young and Francis Gregg. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was a former Sunday School teacher and leader of a Bible study group. She was employed for many years at the former Charles Department Store in Johnson City. She retired from the Johnson City Medical Center, where she worked in medical records for 25 years. Surviving: two sisters, Bessie Juanita Barr Durham and Elsie M. Barr Brown, both of Jonesborough, and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews and great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews. Eva Kate Shankel BRISTOL, Tenn. – Eva Kate Shankel, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Eva was born on June 28, 1914, in Bristol Tennessee, to the late Henry and Rachel Fouch Godsey. Mrs. Shankel lived in the Bristol area all of her life, where she was a mother and a housewife. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her daughters, Virginia Louise Shaffer and husband Robert H., Phyllis Jean Necessary and husband Joe, Mary Elizabeth Walker, Barbara Lue Hopkins, Shirley Joan Nelson and Doris Marie Luchini. Mrs. Tolbert was a homemaker and, until her health failed her, she was an active member of the Norfolk Avenue Baptist Church, the Women’s Circle and had taught Sunday School for several years. Born in Harlin County, Ky., June 29, 1914, the son of Jim and Jennie Stuart Wynn, he was a retired miner with the United Mine Workers Local 2274. He was of the Baptist faith and avid gardener. Living in Clintwood for many years, until the past four years, he lived with Harold and Gladys Thomas in Leon. He was preceded in death by his parents, along with his wife, Wilma Wynn, and later Naomi Baker Wynn, a son, Charles B. Wynn, and daughter Barbara J. Norris. Survivors include his sons, Jim (Pam) Wynn Columbus, Ohio, and Jerry (Abbie) Wynn Isom, Ky.; daughters, Dorothy Amburgey, Columbus, Thelma Sue (Denver) Peters, Darbyville, Ohio, Yvetta (Robert) Gutierriz, Chicago, and Gladys (Harold) Thomas, Leon; daughter-in-law, Herta Wynn, Appomattox, Va., and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
