Bonham Jr. CHILHOWIE – James Buchanan Bonham Jr., age 82, passed away Sunday Aug. 29, 2004, at Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. He was a lifelong, active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Chilhowie. He was a 1943 graduate of Roanoke College, a life member of Sigma Chi fraternity and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His career was spent with the family horticultural business, Bonham Brothers, Inc., of Chilhowie. Mr. Bonham served on the Boards of the former National Bank of Chilhowie, Central Fidelity Bank and the Smyth County Mutual Insurance Co. In addition, he was a long-time member of Chilhowie Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, James B. Bonham Sr. and Okie Neff Bonham. He is survived by his wife, Ora Elena Robinson Bonham. He is also survived by one son, James Bonham III and daughter-in-law, Susan; and two daughters, Ellen Bonham Goode and husband Larry of Raleigh, N.C., and Becky Bonham Andrews and husband, Mac of Leesburg, Fla. Grandchildren surviving are Whitney Bonham of Chilhowie and Leigh Andrews and Ben Andrews of Leesburg. A memorial service will be held at St. James Lutheran Church in Chilhowie on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. Pastor Martin Saarinen and Pastor Gene Copenhaver will officiate. He was the son of the late James P. and Elizabeth Fox Childress, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Mr. Childress worked as a printer and served in the U.S. Air Force. Dennis was formerly a machinist with Bristol Compressors and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, having served in Desert Storm in 1991. He was also a member of the Marine Corps Reserve. He was a graduate of Sullivan East High School. He was born in Danville, Va., but had lived in the Bluff City, Piney Flats area most of his life. He was a son of Joseph M. and Jane A. Broyles Cross. Mr. Haga was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Abingdon, a son of Lucy Gibson Haga and the late Herschel Britton Haga. He started his professional career with the Goddard Space Center in Virginia and was last employed by Healthpoint, where he was dearly loved. Surviving are his long-term companion, Carol H. Davis; his mother of Pawleys Island; one sister, Jane Haga Smith of St. Augustine, Fla.; a nephew, David Smith; his adopted family, Shepherd Davis, Chip and Julie Vermont and Christian and Kelsie Davis; and his adopted grandchildren, who adored Daddy Brit, Jonathan and Elizabeth Parker Vermont. She worked for Sears and Roebuck, H.P. King, Sperry and also sold real estate. She moved to Florida in 1984 and returned to Bristol in 2003. She was a member of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Sullivan County Historical Society. She was also a member of Round Town Dance Club and the Bristol Garden Club. She was the widow of Benjamin H. Meade. Born on Sept. 12, 1909, in Shady Valley, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late R.B. and Martha Jane Blevins Miller. She was employed with Cannon Mills Co. She was a member of Centerview Baptist Church in Kannapolis and a resident of the area since 1940, having moved here from Washington County, Va. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and sewing. Stone Jr. BRISTOL, Tenn. – Cecil Jerome (Jerry) Stone Jr. died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Jerry was born April 24, 1926, a son of the late Cecil J. Stone Sr. and Edna Shumaker Stone. He was a native of Bristol, having graduated from Tennessee High, and attended University of Texas and King College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with service in France, Germany and Belgium, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart and was a Kentucky Colonel. He owned and operated Old Dominion Plywood Corporation of Bristol Virginia, for 30 years before selling to Morrison Molded Fiber Glass. He then was technical director of Morrison Molded Fiber Glass, now Strongwell, until he retired in 1992. He was a member of Bristol Host Lions Club, where he served as president, zone chairman and district governor. He also served two terms as president of Tennessee Industries for the Blind in Morristown, Tenn. He was on the advisory board of Virginia National Bank and was a vice-president of Bristol Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Country Club of Bristol and attended Central Christian Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Carmody Stone; three daughters, Kathryn "Kathy" and her husband Randall L. Wyatt of Monroe, Ga., Dorothy "Missy" and her husband Larry J. White of Jefferson City, Tenn., and Nancy Elizabeth "Beth" and her husband James Aaron McMahon III of Kittrell, N.C.; three grandchildren, Kristen (Wyatt) and her husband Capt. Theodore Shinn of Orange Park, Fla., Stephen White and his wife Angela of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kathleen McMahon of Kittrell; one great-granddaughter, Lauren Shinn; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Oscar and Jane Ann Stone Simpson; uncle, Don Shumaker of Bristol; aunt, Frances Shumaker Bowers of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 1, 2004, at Central Christian Church. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 o’clock, with Dr. Ross Dampier and Jeff Noah, minister, officiating. The committal and interment service will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Church Honor Color Guard. Pallbearers will be Andy Demo, Bill Shumaker, Don Shumaker Jr., Tom Daniel, Mark Simpson and Charles Moore. Stover, age 78, 2828 Anderson Street Extension, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 12, 1925, in Collingswood, N.J., to the late Charles C. and Katherine Swiegast Stover, but lived the past 30 years in the Bristol area. He was a retired quality control inspector for Raytheon and was an U.S. Marine veteran, serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor M. Stover. Also surviving: sons, Robert Stover and wife Dee of High Point, N.C., and David Stover and wife Patrice of Bluff City; daughters, Teresa Stover of Moorestown, N.J., Susanne McCormack of Bristol Tennessee, and Valorie Elliott of Johnson City; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Stover, and daughter, Rachael Stover. There will be no services or visitation held for Robert Stover.
